Dear smokers, get some class please

For the smokers who feel the need to light up any and everywhere they please in spite of designated smoking areas or what kind of people are around them, I understand you have an addiction to your cancer sticks and regularly poisioning your body has become a pleasant ritual for you, but keep in mind there are people in this world that enjoy living and respect the body they've been given.

Are you not aware that second hand smoke harms us more than you because we're breathing in unfiltered poision? There's absolutely no reason other than your inability to control yourself, for you to be lighting up when in public places.

There are children, pregnant women, and men nearby. There are people around you, and since you're not alone you shouldn't be indirectly killing everyone else along with yourself. You might not be blowing the smoke directly into their faces, but you are blowing it into the air they breathe which is equally as bad. Please either learn to control your cravings, or find an area designated for smoking.

The greatest moment of my life is when first the bars, then the restaurants, and then my Uni, and then all city parks became smoke free in my area. Literally it's been a breath of fresh air. As you've said, if you want to individually kill yourself on your free time, go forth in the world and do that, but do that in designated smoking areas where I don't have to be a party to your slow methodical suicide attempt! This is 2015 and for decades now, it has been proven just how dangerous and harmful cigs are to humans, animals, and the environment, and so now some idiot wants me to just stand there an inhale b/c they can't figure out how to quit or worse don't want to... I think not. These same people don't allow random people to show up at their house with a gun and start shooting which would be dangerous to their health, so why should I allow them into my space to do the same.

I see your point here, smokers should not light up in heavy traffic areas and they should not light up in poorly ventilated areas where the smoke lingers even if it is outside. I think smoking should be banned in public all together to be honest because not only is there the smoke side of it there is the litter side of it to. Most smokers litter their butt when they are done and that is rude and selfish. Just because you don't want to deal with a stinky cigarette butt does not mean us non-smokers want it laying around either. Their pathetic cop outs for doing it are also a joke. No bins = well there is not always a bin when I am done eating my chocolate bar but I don't litter the wrapper, cigarettes are no different. If I put my cigarette in a bin it might start a bin fire = well that is true but hello there are pocket ashtrays that you can have that I think also lock in all the nasty smells to and allow you to safely dispose of the butt latter. They are just all pathetic excuses for being selfish. Most smokers don't care, they only care about getting rid of their butt at the cost of the environment and other people that is why I am in full support of a smoking ban anywhere in public spaces. Somkers wine and complain about us non-smokers always giving them a hard time and complaining about them well maybe if the smokers that are like this showed more respect for us non smokers and did not do things like litter their butts me and other non-smokers would have more patience for them!

Really great points. I think it's even more selfish and harmful when it's around someone who can't leave the immediate area. Like a child or someone at a bus stop. I remember being at school, and there are designated smoking areas, and some guy goes to the front where smoking isn't aloud sits right next me and starts smoking. I don't want to get sick because someone else is selfish.

Yes, I was talking to a woman here that lives in England and she said her local beach there in England had butts all through the sand and that you pretty much can't pick up the sand without picking up a load of butts to. I think that is what she was saying. Why do smokers think they have the right to do that? I am pleased my country is not anything like that bad.

Great take. I can relate to this. My boyfriend's dad has major heart problems. He smokes like a chimney. He's a walking ashtray. He uses his kids' money to buy cigarettes if he doesn't have enough with him. He smokes in the truck all the time and it just about makes me sick (literally!). He smokes when he's doing garden work, he smokes when he drives, he smokes when he's preparing food, he smokes when he's fishing and doing ANYTHING else that is outside. He won't quit, yet he's killing himself and his family. He seems to have no idea.

I am a smoker. I do not smoke in front of anyone. If I am at work, I smoke in my car. If I am at home, I smoke outside. If I am out and about, I don't smoke again until I am back in my vehicle. Don't generalize. A lot of smokers are a lot more considerate than you make them out to be.

I feel like it's rude to do it around others. I've had people sit directly next to me and start smoking. Cigarettes cause a lot of damage to your body, and it's just as much of a drug as anything else. I'm sure you wouldn't be okay with someone smoking crack right next to you, this is how a lot of nonsmokers feel. I work in a smoke filled environment and I hate it, I can't wait to get home and get a shower when I home from work. My clothes smell like it, my hair smells like it, my skin itches. And at least once a month, I have to take my inhaler because of it lol. I don't understand how smokers justify hurting other people's health in public places just for their own addiction, it's so selfish and entitled.

Hmmm... I totally agree about not smoking in public places- but nicotine is highly addictive... People cannot always help having addictions.
There are many reasons why people smoke and though I unwaveringly discourage it, you've got to put yourself in another person's shoes.
Smoking keeps people thin, stops food craving and is hard to stop once you start.
I'm not saying I condone it, but you were very rude and used little tact there...

It's not about the smell, it's about people having to breath it in with you. For example, if you go outside and you're standing away from others no one is going to complain about just needing to get by and having to pass your smoke. If you sit next to someone and start lighting up that's rude and they're forced to breathe that in, or if your in an area that the other person mustn't leave, like a bus stop or something it isn't right.

I have a friend who has really bad asthma... He can't breathe in any second hand smoke without taking out his inhaler. I am sympathetic to people who smoke and can't quit their addiction, and while I do think most smokers to be considerate, there are a lot of them who don't seem to think about what it means for those who don't smoke.

in most places smoking is allowed in bars by law (it all depends... again in most states... on the amount of food they serve but true bars are allowed to allow smoking, most just have gotten rid of it because they know they lose patrons

Yeah it's their business if they choose to smoke but they shouldn't choose whether or not we get to smoke with them. It's about not lighting up next to people, it's hurting their bodies and it's not right their fresh air has to be tainted because someone else is inconsiderate.
