I really hate it when people talk in a formal manner to me. Usually those people are secretaries, receptionists or cashiers. Especially females. I don’t want to sound sexist first of all, but I have noticed those who speak formally, are females mostly.
I know it’s their job policy. Also I know there are people who get offended if they don’t speak formal to them. But since both cannot be satisfied, why “formal way” was chosen by default? I don’t understand.
Personally I never speak formal to anyone,it’s simply ridiculous. I speak informal to anyone no matter who he/she might be. And no this doesn’t mean I disrespect anyone,it means I speak like a human would speak to another human normally.
Formality isn’t a way to show respect to someone. It’s a hypocritic way to show your respect to someone. It’s fake, and not just fake, but visibly fake. Deep inside you want to call someone a jerk or a bitch. But instead of calling them like that, you just call them “Sir” or “Madam”. Why are you afraid to call someone a jerk or a bitch if this is how you feel?
I’ve been called “Sir” a couple of times as well. Do they even know what the “Sir” title actually means? I know I’m not a “Sir”,so calling me like that I feel you are making fun of me mostly, and it sounds more ironic than “respectful”,as they think it was supposed to be.
Not every male is a “Sir”. The mistakenly used title “Sir” is a title often given to people of superior social status or a military rank. Not every male is an army general or an emperor, to be called a “Sir”. Learn some things first.
So my opinion about this issue is job policies should be reconsidered. It’s just silly to speak formal to anyone. Think about it. You end up sounding more ironic than “respectful” as I said above.
