I think what people miss is that this day is not so much about celebrating the way you were born, but celebrating the fact that for centuries, women were seen as 'less than' or 'not good enough'. Women were not considered worthy of being granted the same opportunities as men. Just having a vagina meant you were automatically a sheep with no chance of being a leader.

And this day was actually first celebrated as Working Women's Day, then later changed to International Women's Day. So for those who didn't understand I hope they do now. it's the same way that different countries celebrate their independence or whatever fights for rights. this also pays homage to that struggle. Even now there are places in the world where females can be killed for trying to be educated.

So Happy Women's Day to all of us who are privileged enough to even enjoy something like GAG... because of the struggles of many great women and men before us.

I think another thing worth mentioning is that today is also acknowledging the value that women bring, across all cultures and situations, as opposed to just celebrating a certain role they might have (like Mother's Day). I sent my girlfriend a message today, and I didn't make it necessarily sexual or romantic, I simply thanked her, and all other women, for everything they do to make our world better. It seemed important to simply acknowledge her, as opposed to trying to praise her beauty, or tell her what she means to me... I just told her that I respect her.

In Russian we just say "Поздравляю с 8 мартом" (pronounced Pozdravlyayu s vos mim martom) or "Happy 8th of March" since everyone knows about it from the former Soviet Bloc.
