Another day, another massacre. It's not even shocking anymore. And you know what, I'm gonna say it: Americans don't care about the loss of lives. We say, "Never again," like it's a prayer or a mantra, we post our "Safe at _________" on Facebook, maybe have a discussion on gun violence on social media that ends up with "F@$&in' libtards" or "fascist pigs", and the next day we go on with our lives as though nothing happened. It's a cycle that just repeats itself time and time again.
My heart really does go out to the families out there who are suffering because of this violence, but, America, we have made this bed for ourselves. It's been happening for far too long and with far too much publicity and motivation for anything other than lazy apathy to be the reason this continues to happen. The reason this keeps happening is because, in the long run, no one gives a damn.

I completely disagree, the reason this keeps happening is because the debate always focuses on guns rather than what is driving people to violence and how to stop it.
The guy had ammonium nitrate, the same stuff used in the Oklahoma City Bombing, do you think not being able to get a gun would have stopped him from causing harm?
He also had a pilots licence, he could have rented a small plane and crashed it into the crowd (come in at full throttle, impact at a low angle at the back of the crowd).
We focus solely on the tools psychopaths use rather than what drove them to it, that is the problem.
Dude... you do not speak for all Americans. You don't know what is in the heart of every American. So don't even try.
I'm just going off of what I see: time after time, it's the same crap, and nothing has changed. If people really cared, and not that bs "I care, but I am not going to do anything about it crap," there would be change.
What do you want people to do? What are you going to do?
I want people to start really talking about the violence in our society, and how we can address the many reasons behind it. Not just the Facebook arguments, but to actually go to townhall meetings, with a passionate but respectful opinion, to talk about what needs done.
For me, I think we need to address how we as a society handle psychological and behavioral disorders. I would suggest even mandatory biannual visits to a psychiatrist, for wellness checkups. We also need to provide more support/monitoring for individuals who are diagnosed.
In addition, we need to up our gun safety: the requirements to get a gun should allow a similar, if only slightly less amount of people to acquire it, but make it a process that is as tracked and informational as getting an operator's license: hunting weapons will be treated like a class D (basic driver's license), while recreational weapons will be like getting a Class C or B (Commercial and Industrial). People in the services will have Class A.
You do know there a lot of people with mental disorders that are never diagnosed? And you can't force someone to go to the doctor.
I don't know any other option! I am grasping for solutions to problems bigger than my capacity to solve. It just seems to me that other than people calling for gun regulation, no one is doing anything to even begin to solve this problem.
What would you do?
I dont know. But I dont think going half cocked is the answer. They may not be an answer.
So no answer, it's just how things are?
Sorry, that came out wrong. I guess my frustration is that people are willing to shoot down potential solutions without offering a replacement solution. And that if there isn't a solution, it seems to me that what I said has merit: in the end, it's all meaningless, and no one actually cares.
Forcing people to go to the doctor isn't a potential solution.
Okay, make it a requirement of gun ownership only, then. It just seems to me that we shouldn't let people with mental issues handle anything dangerous.
And what about all the people who get guns illegally? So you want to force everyone with a gun to go under a mental evaluation? Who the hell is going to pay for that?
Part of it will come from the owners. All tax and fees (such as registration) concerning guns would pay the administrative costs, and a co-pay paid for by the gun owners will cover a portion of the costs. The rest will be paid for by the government. If it costs $25 billion per year, those are taxes I'd be willing to pay to ensure me and my family were safer.
The people who get guns illegally will be like people who drive cars without a license. Arrested if caught, but there's nothing we can do but amp up policing on arms dealing and illegal shipments of weapons.
Again, this is just a potential solution, and it may fall flat on its face, but at least it'd be something, as opposed to sitting on our hands and saying, "Oh well, nothing I could have done there."
You dont mind spending other people's money do you? So what are you going to do if someone and it already has... starts killing with knives. Are knife owners going to go under a mental exam?
Do you understand the basic concepts behind government? Basically, a society recognizes that certain problems are beyond the capacity of individuals to handle. To address the issue, the people pool their resources, allowing a singular entity to use said resources to tackle the various problems. It is through this social contract that government forms from. Some problems come from outside sources, such as the environment or other societies. On the other hand, some problems come from inside the society. Murder, rape, etc. are examples of these. To solve these problems, the government must use the resources given to them. Sometimes, the government fails, and changes must be made. These changes cause the government to require more resources.
As for knives, I've yet to see a knifeman murder 58 people and wound 489 in 10 minutes. Murder is a terrible thing regardless, but some weapons are just too effective to be allowed in the hands of psychopaths.
I know how government works. I just don't want that much of it. This guy would have probably slipped through a mental exam. It would have not done any good.
A 1 in 100 chance that something like this might be prevented is better than 100% certainty of it happening.
Well let's just see how far you go with this.
You have an interesting point of view, and sadly, I understand what you mean.
