Depends on who, some people like my parents had a hard time struggling to keep our home and we never bought anything expensive, we barely had furniture...
But I can't really feel bad for the ones that spends lots of money and are broke because of it.
I have a friend that buys expensive things but then complains about being broke.
Tbh , if he is complaining about that , he is prolly complaining in most situations. My family is like we can't afford expensive cars or things but my parents also work really hard to afford my education (which is the most important), and I don't call my family poor , because I know other families who can't even afford education or food are poor.
and I agree just by sitting there talking shit about how 'poor' they are, they can choose to work more or harder
Undoubtedly some poor people are poor because of they have legit disabilities, trying to support family members, etc.
A TON of them are poor because they aren't smart enough to save money, work hard, and invest it to better themselves. Like I read those articles about poor single mothers who only get 29 hours a week at McDonalds... it's like WTF. 1. Why did you have kids? Were you too stupid to use contraceptives? 2. If you only get 29 hours a week why not find a better job? Are you too bad of a worker to find a second job or a full time job? I worked two jobs for 5 months straight. I worked 8-10 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Yea, I know i'm still young at 28. But I remember 40 hours a week being a slow week for me. Having some 12-16 hour work days. That was just me and having a girlfriend. If I had kids I would grind even harder, because I'd have the kids to think about. Anyone that's complaining about not getting the hours, in my mind has flawed thinking. No company owes you anything and it's on you to work. If a company has a lot of employees and you're fighting for hours you should probably just get another job to consolidate and don't waste your time with them.
Not always no. Some people are poor because they are born into an environment, where they can't get an education, thus can't get good high paying jobs. Everyone's lives is different, their situations are different and have a limit of what they can and cannot do. Single mothers for instance or single father's. Families who's parents don't have much education, and can't afford it for their children.
Not everyone's family is going to be like yours. It's nice that your parents taught you to save money.
Some of it does have to do with poor money management. I know a guy who had reason to believe that he will be receiving $14,000. He was mistaken but it was somewhat understandable given the situation. So, the moment he thought he was going to receive the $14,000 he had already figured out what he was going to spend every last penny on. And not a single penny was going towards an investment.
The question is, why are they bad with money. Is it their personality or are they ignorant. At least with the latter the person can get educated and change, whereas the former . . . they're probably going to live paycheck to paycheck no matter how much they make.
No, there are a lot of different reasons why people are poor. I doubt Mr. Shapiro had much of a struggle in his upbringing. It is true that a lot of people are very bad with money, but a lot of people who aren't are poor nonetheless. Most personal bankruptcies in the US are due to health issues.
As far as in developed countries, poor people are poor because they made bad decisions.
In the US, EVERY poor person made a bad decision, usually more than one. Common ones are: Dropping out of school, getting pregnant without being in a financially stable marriage, getting divorced, being lazy, using drugs or excessive alcohol, and not insuring their income.
Well corrupt governments and the cost of living expenses has definitely made a lot of people worse off. But you're right, people today are too materialistic. I've been saying this for a long time. People are so obsessed with material possessions that it is making them unhappy. For thousands of years people never had a TV, computer, mobile phone, or a car etc. People just focused on healthy living and love and commitment, keeping the family unit strong. The time I became the most happy and free in life is when I stopped caring about material possessions and focused more on the more important things in life, growing my own organic food, living healthy, and love. Material possessions can be taken away, and they don't bring people happiness.
They have responsibilities to pay for and didn't get a good startoff in life. Some people just unluckily have talents in jobs that aren't well paid. Its not cause theyre lazy. Because working with your hands is very hard work but i know it doesn't always pay to do so.
There is some element of choice of course, but overwhelmingly the academic consensus is that society ultimately contributes to the poor staying poor.
I can agree with that even though in my experience my family came out wealthy were not that wealthy because of everyday things like taxes and bills were still the poorest people in the street even though we have the biggest house
how does society contributing to it. There are all kinds of unfilled good paying jobs in trucking, plumbing, electricians, etc right now. Student loans are easy to get and the school for these things is not very long
@imwithstupid No i'm talking about people that can't go to tertiary education, don't finish high school and have to deal with very difficult problems at home. because of circumstances out of their control they are unable to realistically bring themselves out of poverty. In Australia the best education, and entrance into the high paying jobs are reliant on how much money your parents are willing to pay. Plumbing and electricians are well paid and don't need excessive education but they are the exception.
I come from a working class background and suffer from dyslexic, went to the worst school in my town and I left school with one GCSE, lost my job and was unemployed for 6 months and managed to pick myself back up and got a apprenticeship and I get paid the apprenticeship minimum wage which is not much at all in Britain and I still managed to have enough money.
But I understand in other countries if you don't have a great education, it's very difficult but in England I just don't believe anyone is living in poverty unless they are living in streets

People who buy lottery tickets in general know they are wasting money but do it anyway so they would be a poor example why people are poor and they are bad with money.

I'm poor because I earn like $3k a year at the moment. But that being said I only spend it on necessities (phone, fuel etc). If I had lots of money, I wouldn't be poor, but there are others out there who would spend money before they even got it.
Definitely not. I have a good friend who lives on welfare. His family moved to Canada from Korea, and their qualifications weren’t recognized so they had to run a crappy motel and are still very poor. They’re not bad with money, they’ve just struggled to find good paying work.
Maybe they should go back to Korea.
@WalterRadio They like it here because it’s more democratic (his parents were dissidents in the 1980s) and the education system is less stressful. Also my friend can’t speak Korean that well anymore so it wouldn’t help to go back

I know that every single poor person who grew up and lives in a developed country has made bad choices that results in their being poor. I know of no exception in the modern era.

anyone can be qualified to drive a big rig and make $70k per year in 8 weeks. Companies are begging fro drivers and will pay for the school. Lots of other examples. Sometimes you have to take responsibility for yourself

I'm all for helping the handicapped and "real" mentally ill. However if you have 2 good arms and 2 good legs, you'll have to pull your own weight or starve, just like everybody else and no life ain't always fair. When you grow up and get a job and see way too many other people expecting the rest of us to fix their woes you'll agree with us. Most people get more conservative as they age, trust me

There are people, who actually can't afford basic needs. That's poverty.

In some situations, yes. There are people that would not struggle if they'd manage their resources better. There are also people that are just in a bad situation. There's nothing wrong with recognizing that some people could do better, but we can't paint all poor people with the sake broad brush.

Being "bad with money" is probably the last reason I think someone is poor. But then again, I don't know much as bout the lives of actual Americans. In my country poverty is heridetry and there is almost no social or economic mobility. Also, Americans are very ungrateful about actually having that mobility.

Ah, yes, the "everyone can be rich, they just have to have lots of people working for them" book. I saw it more as a lesson in how to spot when you're being exploited.
