In the 90’s, we wore dresses like this all the time in an area that had the WWII concentration camps. Those families were not offended, they appreciated cultural appreciation and said they only dreamed of the day when all cultures were accepted everywhere. Dreadlocks, braids, and corn rolls were common among all races, no one batted an eye. Now we are going making less progress in acceptance by claiming appropriation. It further fuels racism.
Teach your culture and be excited when others want to embrace it.
My wife, ethnically Korean, gave my sister, ethnically 1/2 white, 1/2 Native American, a hanbok. Was my wife a cultural traitor? Is my sister practicing cultural appropriation by accepting and wearing it?
Is my wife, in playing Bach or Beethoven, culturally appropriating music? When she practiced her eight note diatonic scales (do, re, mi), is she culturally appropriating a musical system? After all, her ancestors used a pentatonic scale. In fact, prior to the Colonial Age, almost all the world used some form of pentatonic scale. My wife loved Kpop. All that's using a diatonic scale. They're all using western instruments, too!
I think the whole thing is fucking stupid. She saw a dress that she thought was aesthetically pleasing and descided to wear it to prom. She definitely didn't deserve to be attacked by thousands of people online for it.
And the outrage seems to be primarily in the US while the people in China are indifferent and don't even consider that style of dress to be that sacred or meaningful.
I just hope that Jeremy guy gets bullied at least equally as much as the girl did. The people who try to create an internet mob to harass inoscent people over trivial shit like that really need to experience a taste of their own medicine.
Cultural Appropriation is whinny ass bullshit. period. Unless someone is using it to make fun or hurt feelings, or to disparage ( think black face) who cares? This girl looks beautiful in it.. the prayer hands was a bit much.. and that is more offensive that her wearing the dress. If people are really offended by Cultural Appropriation, its because you don't have a enough real things to worry about. Life has been to easy for you.. And if life hasn't been to easy for you, they you priorities are just plan wrong.. In the States, we live in the Great Melting Pot, that in itself indicates that cultures MIX here, its what should bring us together..
This is sjw culture that is plaguing us with this bullshit. It needs to die. Just let other people do what they want. Isn't that what sjw's want? Inclusivity and tolerance? Yet they are just as intolerant as religious people!
She is not stealing your culture, she's appreciating it. Like if a party had a back in the past theme and people wore hippie clothes or 90s parachute pants.
I do get upset when people where punk rock attire but know nothing of the culture of the music. Is that cultural appropriation?

I think it was okay! It’s okay if white and black people (Beyoncé did this) wear henna, wear saris, and other Indian influenced clothing. It’s okay for them to use it for music videos and their festivals. That stuff is culturally okay. If that stuff can be, why not a dress? It’s done all the time. Celebs wear cornrows all of the time, wear henna, wear hoop earrings, the list goes on. A beautiful dress should be no different. Not only that, but Saint Patrick’s Day, Valentine’s Day, everything comes from a different culture. America is still relatively new, so everything in America right now will be influenced by other cultures.

The fact that a culture invents or creates an item or a style of item does not mean that the culture owns that item and it is off limits to others. This is simply an excuse for one group - typically a minority - to claim that it is offended, demand reaction, and thereby extend the reach of its power.
Is there any law that says a Caucasian cannot wear Asian styles of clothing? No. If minorities want to insist that they should not be treated differently than the majority, why do they go to such great lengths to make sure that they stand out? Aren't they segregating themselves?
Deeply offended, no, but it does make me think they're idiots. I think they would have used their hands for another pose, if they thought they could get away with a slant eye group photo or if their prom were in 2008.
Honestly though, if you felt so incline you could roast the fat girl in the front, the retard looking one back right, the inbred hillbilly front right, the 12 year old in the grey suit, or the guy with the 60’s perm back middle.
Further more, her Name Keziah Daum means I can call her a fucking Kraut and giving her Nazi salutes if I really felt like being nasty...
It’s really easy to be offensive and everyone can be roasted, it’s probably why I don’t feel the *level* of offense is even close to what I can pull out.
The captions of the pic is what makes it sad funny, the pic without caption is just sad. "It’s really easy to be offensive and everyone can be roasted" You could, but you don't.. and that's what counts.
this is totally right. we borrow and steal ideas, customs and such from other cultures all the time, and only now it is unacceptable? learn your history first before you decide to get offended by this
Culture is not a static thing Cultures influences each other absorb things from each other and thereby grows So a white girl wears a Chinese dress which from what I understand was designed originally with western influences Why is that bad? People in China aren't bothered Are the bothered people upset when Asian kids wears a tuxedo to a prom? If someone outside your culture absorbs things from yours why are you not happy? Why are you not proud? Your culture is influential that is a good thing
The trend of “cultural appropriation” is fucking annoying and I hate it.
Thinking that you own something which you were simply born into is so arrogant.
She wore this dress, a qibab I believe it’s called, in the same setting chinese people would wear it in: a festivity.
Appreciating someone else’s culture and wanting to take part in it is the highest form of respect. She did not mock the dress or chinese culture, she respectfully embraced it.
If you asked chinese they would be happy that a foreigner wears their traditional clothing. It's Asian americans who have problems with this. So I say she has fun wearing that dress.
If for example some foreigner wore my country's traditional clothing I would be happy that they appreciate my culture.
I saw this on twitter and I honestly think she looks beautiful in it! I am half Asian and I can see where people might think this was wrong, but she did not have any bad intentions in wearing the dress. However, I do not speak for those who are offended by this because this is not my culture. It's an if-y situation.
I feel like normally someone should feel flattered that a person liked "their stuff" too much that they wanna make it a part of their life too. but you know, someone's gotta whine about something or else where is the world going fellas? TOLERANCE? WORLD PEACE? :O GOD FORBID!
Every culture culturally appropriates. Japan, for instance. Pling Plong music disappeared long ago. Bluegrass and Blues music is derived from Irish folk music Black Gospel's form is derived from Africa. Country-Western music is popular in Europe and Asia. The most popular foods in America are Mexican and Chinese. This whole Cultural Appropriation rant is just another victimization movement. You people need to get a life and stop whining.
It's as much cultural appropriation as a Chinese woman wearing a European style dress. It's funny how these people who claim that we're all the same and that we should be inclusive when it comes to other races and other cultures then bash white people for doing so. The diagram with all of those points that lead to white people being racist was spot on, with these people you can't win either way. It's ridiculous.
If Asians have a right to be upset about this dress, then whites have a right to be upset when they see a black person with straight hair, or a number of things that are from European culture. So if an Asian person sees a Hispanic person eating, say, dumplings, do they have a right to be upset? These sentences I’m writing are ridiculous, because the issue is ridiculous. There IS such a thing as cultural appropriation- but wearing a certain style of dress isn’t apart of it.
Yes it is cultural appropriation. But cultural appropriation isn't inherently bad. The whole debate is twisted under the assumption that cultural appropriation is bad. Those who disagree are then forced to try and argue that it isn't cultural appropriation. It's very clever.
to reiterate... Rock and Roll's whole existence is from so called "Cultural appropriation" People where not so sensitive and THANK GOD! or we woud not have it. A great musical genre! if everyone was so snowflaky like they are today , we'd not have 3/4 of the music we have today..
I've travelled the world a bit, and in most cultures, I've found little aspects of that culture that I like and still carry with me to this day. The only ones that I didn't take anything with me are ones that I deeply disliked. If someone comes from another country and visits America, and takes it back with them, as an American, I take it as nothing but a compliment.
It's all about perspective. If you want to be offended you will be.
As an Asian American, I do not find an issue with this at all. Most Asian counties sell cultural items to people, even in Chinatowns in the US. Maybe if she had an Asian male as a date, the originator of the criticism would not have been so mad. Tasteful imitation is the best kind of compliment
The originator of the criticism, as you say it, would have been mad anyway. Because the problem isn't the dress. It's the fact that it's a white woman who wear it. And for that kind of people, if there is an opportunity to spit on white people, they'll take it. The dress is just an excuse. Cultural appropriation is just an excuse. Those people are racists, but they use any way they can to deny it.
I guess it could be offensive if you wore tribal African masks to prom just to make fun of that culture or something like that, but it's a dress people, you wear dresses to prom. My race may be Asian but I'm not. Never set foot outside of America in my life. You'd have to go dressed as a cheeseburger to appropriate my culture😂

What they are doing originated with Buddhism, therefore is Indian ( and much more associated with Thailand).
People screaming cultural appropriation don’t even know their own culture, i’m ashamed of any Chinese who are “offended” by this tbh.
Right... because it only counts when it's done 100% correctly.
@bubble_tea Are you genuinely offended by that lol? May I ask why?
Deeply offended, no, but it does make me think they're idiots. I think they would have used their hands for another pose, if they thought they could get away with a slant eye group photo or if their prom were in 2008.

I want people to stop eating all our god damn curry! And stop using zero. Indians invented zero! you gotta pay us interest on our hecking zeros
@keenybmr baha 😂
But I’m pretty sure the phoenicians invented zeros
