We had a GOP controlled WH, Senate and House until just a few days ago. To me, the GOP is moving further to the right. The Dems should be writing Trump and the rest of the GOP thank you notes for their electoral successes. I am sure that there are more to come.
Who is in charge tells you nothing about what their political ideology is... If I told you Tim was in charge and now Johnny is does that tell you what their political stances are? Pew shows that both sides are polarizing, but the democrats are doing so more... That's just evidenced on the basis self-report stats.
If you mean that the Dems are becoming more progressive, then I agree. I think that's a wonderful thing and will save us from this destructive course that we are currently on. Stats show that most members of the GOP support Trump. I think that this indicates the GOP moving further to the right. Moderate GOP politicians are losing their footing. I believe that if the Dems become more progressive, then the GOP will be forced to come back to the center.
Trump is really pretty moderate. He's not fiscally conservative at all. Most conservatives I know didn't want to vote for him because he wasn't viewed as being conservative (as he was a democrat until 5 minutes ago).
The erosion of the enforcement of laws to protect the environment, civil rights and voting rights to name a few... Real conservatives may not see Trump as a "real conservative," but right wing elements in this country support him for this nationalistic and not so subtle anti-immigration views. In the past, these same people would have supported Hitler in pre-WW II Germany. His supporters don't give a damn about fiscal responsibility. Most are too stupid to even understand it... or any economic policy at all.
Well being anti illegal immigration is certainly not anti-immigration, but there does seem to be a growing populist movement which wants to reduce overall immigration. Is this a response to the open border advocates or did they arise in tandem? Hard to say.
There should never have been 2 parties in the first place. It just created a rift for no reason whatsoever.

So true. Dems are way too left for me now. And the same for Reps--they moved way too right in 2010 and are just as bad. What happen to good days of middle ground? :(
There never were good days of middle ground. The reason is compromise is just as bad if not worse then just giving in to the other side. For exampled im a principled conservative. I think it corrupts people morally to give them free services with no strings attached. That doesn't mean im against charity but i think you need to be doing the right things in life and then a little help is good. Welfare as it exists and has always existed in this country is 100% pure evil and should be done away with. Now how do you square that away with someone who believes in universal basic income who thinks its moral to give everyone money even if they want to use it to buy drugs and gamble its their business and they are owed the money anyways? There is no compromise to be had. There never was and there never will be.
Compromises are bad. See obamacare. Now we have it yet its defunded. Perfect compromise right? Not many people liked those "deals". Very few things are supported by both parties. Most of what your thinking of is just stuff that passed in spite of one party being against it. Its always been very heated in congress since the very beginning. I can't even think of an issue that there really is middle ground to even compromise over. Most issues are all or nothing. Can we have half abortions? Half a war? Half a wall? Half a universal basic income? Technically we can kinda do these things half way but its useless if you dont do these things all or nothing.
I think not bc there is no final thing in the middle...
Look Left extreme final: everyone is safe, enough food for all, no problem dont getting solved... Right extreme final: im good, I have all, everyone who is not me is dead and not my problem...
I have seen reports where the Republicans have moved so far right they are pulling Democrats right. The problem isn't which party has moved more right or left. The problem is the two parties are not working together.
The Republicans have moved a little to the right, but far less so than the democrats have moved to the left as I demonstrated with the research from Pew.
I read your claim and saw your source. Then i stated have heard about research states the opposite. I go on to state the i feel blaming which side is gone more right or left is pointless. As both parties have both move away from the center and are not working together.
While the Democrats are clearly no longer the Party of JFK, Left/Right can be misleading as some parts of each philosophy as currently defined are more collectivist than the other side's. I think a truer spectrum is from Liberty to Totalitarianism.
Well the that's why I was talking about democrats and republican. Left/Right is a poor descriptor because there's at least one more axis (libertarian authoritarian) I used left in the context of the Pew research.
Right.. Because they're on the same axis. I'm talking about the four quadrant model you can see in my profile picture where left/right is the x-axis and libertarian/authoritarian are the y-axis. I'm not sure if my statement was confusing...
It is sad because regular Democrats are ok with me the whole problem is the normal Democrats who are not crazy won't ever aknowledge the fact that the far left people are bad for the country.
Excellent take. I can't believe it, because I was just thinking about this subject today.

Further left with the politics they sell but they are as corrupt and greedy as the republicans. They are left of republicans and not by much and still right wing.
That literally makes no sense. Which party is in power has nothing to do with whether or not their political stances are moving... It'd be like pointing to the Nazis and saying they're not radicalized because they don't have political power. It would make just as little sense.
The country elected three branches of a rightwing party that by many estimates is borderline fascist. It's not the Dems who are moving left. It's the GOP moving right. The net effect is the same, the Dems are getting further away from them. But by God if you don't realise Trump has DRAGGED the GOP even further right then you're blind.
There should be a centrist party for centre left and centre right, cuz I'm centre left but sadly share my views closer to the centre right than the lefts are today :(.
They've moved slightly right, but less than democrats have moved to the left per the research I cited. Donald has governed fairly conservative, but he was a democrat until 5 minutes ago and has many left leaning policies. He's really pretty moderate.
@BrownBratzDoll Trump was a registered democrat until 2009. There was a pretty big theory running around before he won that he was actually a democrat who was duping the republicans particularly on behalf of the Clinton's as they appear to have been really quite friendly. He was pro national health care for example. He was pro national healthcare, has pushed some gun legislation, is in favor of raising the debt ceiling, is in favor of term limits, was pro drug legalization (now just marijuana) etc.
He's also fairly moderate on certain issues like illegal immigration, but the personal animus against him has driven the democrats crazy. The recent shut down in which politicians who have argued for preventing illegal immigration (via border walls) for over a decade are now saying it's racist and immoral is a perfect case in point. He also says/ said gay marriage is a settled issue via Obergefell V Hodges (so he doesn't want to "repeal" it).
He's also fairly conservative on some issues. He's pro death penalty, advocates protectionist policies (which can really go either way), he says he's against abortion in most cases, he's fairly pro industry (keystone pipeline, against rapid renewable energy moves etc)
Trump mostly just likes to jump on grenades by saying dumb things, but if you look at him historically and in terms of his actual legislation (as opposed to rhetoric) he's fairly moderate. Perhaps he's more conservative populist on several issue, but he's really not radically conservative on any metric I can really see.
I didn't claim a conspiracy theory. Either you misread my comment, or you are intentionally being obtuse. "There was a pretty big theory running around before he won that he was actually a democrat who was duping the republicans particularly on behalf of the Clinton's" I never stated nor implied that I agreed with this theory. You can simply google it (as I can't add pictures on the comment thread) to see that it was a widespread hypothesis.
I do find it humorous though that instead of pointing out where he's uber right or addressing my points about how he's fairly moderate you find it more appropriate to comment about random things.
"It was a widespread belief that spirits were the cause of illness before the germ theory of disease" "HAHA! You believe in the spirit theory of disease!"
@ladsin ure right. But I've heard somebody else mention that he is a conservative populist. Maybe that's why he won? It's not too much of eiather party
@BrownBratzDoll Well that's why I said he could be said to be somewhat conservative populist. His protectionist policies (trade war with China, anti-illegal rhetoric because "illegals" are stealing jobs, bringing back coal jobs etc) are pretty populist ideas. Populism isn't necessarily a conservative or progressive position, but based on surrounding context he'd obviously lean towards conservative populism.

Even if the American democrats have moved slightly more to the "left", they are overwhelmingly in the right-wing.
Liberalism will always defend religion, private property and hierarchy, and that's what classifies it as right-wing.
By European standards? Maybe, certainly not by American standards as demonstrated above.
Americans live in their own world. They can call their position whatever they want, it will always remain right-wing.

@bamesjond0069 The 1950s and the late 1960s to the 80s, there were compromises and parties working together to make deals.
Compromises are bad. See obamacare. Now we have it yet its defunded. Perfect compromise right? Not many people liked those "deals". Very few things are supported by both parties. Alrighty.

There are Libertine Authoritarians but "libertarian authoritarian" is as much of a contradiction as "married bachelor."
Right.. Because they're on the same axis. I'm talking about the four quadrant model you can see in my profile picture where left/right is the x-axis and libertarian/authoritarian are the y-axis. I'm not sure if my statement was confusing...
Sorry. Yes, I misunderstood.
There are libertarian leftists and libertarian right wingers. As are there authoritarian versions.
Libertarian leftists would be democratic socialists, Marxists and anarchists.
Libertarian right is free market libertarianism.
Both Democrats and Republicans have moved considerably farther left.
Both have moved left, "considerably" is a relative assessment I guess.
How about 200% farther left for Democrats and 150% farther left for Republicans.
If you look at the polls on topics like same sex marriage, weed, taking care of the environment, wars, etc. Most Americans are liberals
The politicians are still stuck in the 1950s
Well yes, both sides are far more liberal now than they were in the 50s. That's why I was talking about the past two decades.
You literally had the GOP running all 3 branches of government until a few weeks ago.
And you want us to think the Democrats are too far left now?
That literally makes no sense. Which party is in power has nothing to do with whether or not their political stances are moving... It'd be like pointing to the Nazis and saying they're not radicalized because they don't have political power. It would make just as little sense.
Geez, if I have to explain it to you...
Lol.
Beautifully Done, hun.
Further Left and Righty Out the Door with More... xx
There should be a centrist party for centre left and centre right, cuz I'm centre left but sadly share my views closer to the centre right than the lefts are today :(.
We have an outsider and poth parties hate him he is called President Trump. He only wants what is good for the American people.
I think Donald has proved Republicans have moved further to the right.
They've moved slightly right, but less than democrats have moved to the left per the research I cited. Donald has governed fairly conservative, but he was a democrat until 5 minutes ago and has many left leaning policies. He's really pretty moderate.
You are really deluded if you think he is moderate in anyway.
Cool, so tell me what he’s super conservative on.
@ladsin. What policies are not conservative? And why did he switch to Republican. If he really a Democrat. That's crazy
@BrownBratzDoll Trump was a registered democrat until 2009. Conspiracy theories about Clinton aren't helping you. It just makes you look more uninformed.
I didn't claim a conspiracy theory. Either you misread my comment, or you are intentionally being obtuse. It's alright, I'm moving farther right in response.
the right has moved so far right, that it only looks like the left has moved to the extreme right
the RIGHT is POLARIZING POLITICS
That's not what these results show.
nope
the RIGHT IS MOVING TOO FAR TO THE RIGHT
Cool
ORANG MAN BAD!
very
It seems that both sides are moving more to the extreme points of the spectrum.
Well that a bit of a shorthand, but essentially in the past two decades yes. Except the democrats have done so at almost twice the rate.
