I guess one good reasons for libraries to continue to exist is that they contains loads of really old books that you can't borrow but that are accessible on request. They're the history of our countries... But visiting a library is not really done anymore. Students sometimes go there to study, since it's calm.
Librares are very useful for getting difficult to find information. A lot of book information is actually impossible to find on the internet. The only thing you see on the internet from books is what someone decided to include in an article usually. Books tend to be much more in depth.
Also, most libraries aren't like that, not even the ones in NYC
The important thing is to save knowdledge that are in the book and protect them. The library doesn't matter much, the library do matter only if it is a historic construktion/building like the Egypten pyramid or Alexandria library or just important.
What they need is updated, books may not be used widely but in the event of a tragedy the Internet is not guaranteed to work or survive depending on the event (say an electrical storm or emp) electronics will be toast but books will be fine and still contain knowledge, I do not think libraries need to exist in the state they currently do but to say they need to be disposed of sounds like a lack of forward thinking
They’re also a quiet place to go study if your house is busy, a place for people without computers to access the internet, a place for people who can’t afford books to have an opportunity to read.
That said, the old huge box building public building style doesn’t have to be how it’s done with modern technology. Most of the cons can be made up by modernizing it with things like book delivery/bins, e book/e reader rentals and more automated search/delivery mechanisms.
I enjoy going to the library for a public free place to get away. My libraries always have people and full parking lots. I see your points and you do have a good argument but libraries I believe still hold some use as a flow of information
You make some good points but one main reason I think they should stay is so history can't be easily changed by some world leaders. If every book written was made digital and there where no more books around, all someone would have to do is change some text thats written online. That would be a lot easier to do than to change what has been written in a book.
good point - the person who made this mytake clearly has no respect for physical books and their authors, clearly knows nothing of how writing changes the world time and time again
how are you so ignorant lmaoooooo... what about plaques and video footage of history? that is literally parts of history itself so no, history can't be changed by books
@5yrup how am I so ignorant? how are you? In historiography, the term historical revisionism identifies the re-interpretation of the historical record. It usually means challenging the orthodox (established, accepted or traditional) views held by professional scholars about a historical event, introducing contrary evidence, or reinterpreting the motivations and decisions of the people involved. The revision of the historical record can reflect new discoveries of fact, evidence, and interpretation, which then provokes a revised history. In dramatic cases, revisionism involves a reversal of older moral judgments. When history gets deleted and books burned ethics rarely come into it. The gospels and doctrines of Arian and nestorian Christianity were burned from existence by the early Catholic church though I suspect there are copies saved in the Vatican. Even a Shakespeare play is missing. The Nazis burned nearly every copy of Jewish and communist literature in Germany. History is litterally written by the victors and has propoganda edited by governments who decide what is historically correct. I remember picking up an old history book in my grandfather's place about the history of Ireland written in the 80s that mention the Irish troubles it ommitted certain obvious facts about what happened at the ballymurphy massacre and on bloody Sunday exonerating the parachute regiment saying they only opened fire to defend themselves despite all the video footage and evidence to the contrary.
I dont know how to do that @ thing but @The_White_Queen you just blew my mind with that answer. You said exactly what I was thinking but made it sound so much better. Well done!
I don't know what libraries you go to, but the ones I go to are nothing like is described here. And as far as research goes, the internet is invaluable, but there are also many things not found on the internet, but only in books. Besides that, there are types of research that the internet does not lend itself too, that books do very well.
I make use of libraries often. The library and it's contents have been a favourite refuge of mine... as my vision continues to worsen, as I'm legally blind and dyslexic, I love reading... it breaks my heart, but I still go and use the library, and still read as much as I can.
You would fail in the academic world if you only rely on websites for sources. Libraries exist for proper academic research to access primary and secondary sources. The Internet has credible sources only 27% of the time, and if something were to happen to Internet servers, then how will you do research. Most information from the Internet is flawed information from someone who is uninformed, politically driven, or a conspiracy theorist. And trust me, compared to what else tax money goes to libraries cost very little
They’re not just stocking books for people to borrow. It’s part of culture. Plus there’s something different between books and websites that say the same thing. (Not sure how to explain that, but it reminds me of the difference between a letter and an email.)
You need to try harder lol, spodermanfan seems to be on her way to successfully save her libraries, no one seems to care about this 😂, I never use public libraries by the way
Not my cause, just my opinion as to why. People are more than welcome to express their feelings on the matter, no censorship of differing opinions here.
Your points are valid although being too dependent on technology could lead to a quick downfall in case of an EMP bomb always having a back up is better
I like book stores much better. Our libraries in Dade County I feel uncomfortable with the security guard walking around nitpicking people left and right and you can't bring the food to certain areas and then they're always watching you like a hawk and saying if you spill any liquids on that computer your paying for it. I have freedom at bookstores. I don't need a security guard saying don't play your tablet at the library when the sounds barely turned on
I prefer reading from an actual pages the book, I love the feeling of it in my hands, the smell of the book and well, being away from technology! I hate reading off my phone, I love a good old fashioned book. I read at least 2-3 books a week and I don't like the idea of 'kindles' or other reading devices. #saveourlibraries
die? no! but they should be upgrated - like e-books... maybe downloading books on your e-reader etc. libraries are great for studying its like working out at the gym you can do it all at home but at home is not studying atmosphere as in library or workout atmosphere as in gym its also great social gathering where you are among other people and not at home
God help us... look, if you get rid of the Libraries, you are literally destroying knowledge. Suppose that internet goes down, how will anyone remember the theory of Relativity, or the Epic of Gilgamesh?
You know why humanity took 2000 years to get to where we are? Because the German barbarians burned Roman and Alexandrian libraries. We called the era after those wars the Dark Ages, and we still haven't figured out half the shit that the ancient civilizations knew.
I agree. Where is our knowledge, in a cloud... see not really a great place, clouds dissapear sometimes. I rather have stuff I can touch. Same thinking with investments.
"Because the German barbarians burned Roman and Alexandrian libraries. We called the era after those wars the Dark Ages," See obviously you are not visting your local library
Of course I visit my local library. The purpose of those libraries is to have physical records. Poor and homeless people use them to access the internet, kids do school work, moms bring their young kids. Libraries are very important places.
I'm pretty sure that by now we have figured out most of everything that was lost. The issue is that we could have done it at least a couple of centuries earlier and would have landed on the moon in the mid 1760's.
@ThisDudeHere no we couldn't have. The information we lost still survived in places like Constantinople, China, India the western world had not really developed yet outside mediterean countries. It was the age of exploration that changed everything. Countries like China, Egypt, India, turks and the Arabs had the means and the knowledge to do what Spain, France, holland, Britain and Portugal did, they just didn't have the will or the vision.
this is so ignorant LOL just because you dont use libraries doesn't mean other people dont... it has more uses than just books; lots of libraries have now been mordernised and have clubs/groups, cafes, events for schoolchildren and it's just a place to study. shittiest mytake ever
also encouraging people to engage less with the real world and just depend on "ebooks" and "pdfs" just sounds like the mindset of an obese and unintelligent person
The Libraries in my city are utilized from the time they open till they close daily. Not everyone has smartphones, ipads, or tablets. Their is waiting periods to use the computers in the Libraries. There are many other things that can be die out before Libraries.
I don't agree with any of this, I like the library but then again I'm not a technology loving person. So, I'll take a library book over the internet any day. Also, none of those things that you say take place in my library. I live in a small town in Midwest IL, so we don't have homeless people or drug addicts loitering about and I don't think things like that happen in libraries as often as you think. I just totally disagree with this entire thing.

History can be easily changed, you just burn the books you don't like and print corrected editions.
that's impossible because there are many editions of one book owned by people all over the world and it's just completely unethical
how are you so ignorant lmaoooooo... what about plaques and video footage of history? that is literally parts of history itself so no, history can't be changed by books

none of them seems to care about your cause, they are just here to tell you their various feelings about libraries
Not my cause, just my opinion as to why. People are more than welcome to express their feelings on the matter, no censorship of differing opinions here.
Your points are valid although being too dependent on technology could lead to a quick downfall in case of an EMP bomb always having a back up is better
If a EMP bomb hits I'm sure library books would be the least of the problems, we'd probably burn the books to keep ourselves warm in the winter
There are better things to burn 😜😂👍🏼
In a city?
Yes, burn the petrol in the tanks of cars that no longer run.
@October808 yes to make starting a fire with nook easier.

Yet they are empty. As for internet access, your talking about a small room with 20 computers.
I'm pretty sure that by now we have figured out most of everything that was lost. The issue is that we could have done it at least a couple of centuries earlier and would have landed on the moon in the mid 1760's.

There's a whole plethora of reasons why Europe engaged in colonialism - vision and drive being the least of them.
@ThisDudeHere basic conquest. It's what was done pre 1945. Everyone did it. Often conquerors were conquered.
