Staten Island is the center of Donald Trump’s support in New York City. Leading up to the election, the island, where I live, was full of enthusiastic Trump supporters, proudly displaying their favorite MAGA flags. Much like the voters of deeply red states, they denounced this summer’s Black Lives Matter protests, were appalled by the motto “defund the police” — and many questioned the legitimacy of the COVID lockdowns. One thing’s for certain: Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio are not well-liked amongst the 57% of Staten Islanders who voted for Trump.

BUT YET...

The second night, there was a larger rally. The Republican leadership, including Rep.-elect Malliotakis, spoke to hundreds of people under the sea of Trump and American flags.
“I am a proud Western Chauvinist,” said one of the speakers who identified as a member of the Proud Boys, the far-right group.


Does the Staten Island Republican Party believe we should “defund the Sheriff’s department,” which someone in the crowd was screaming?
