Nationalism has always existed, but as as idea and political movement it came out of Germany, America and England during the 18th century. This was a period when the three countries felt related, like cousins of each other. In fact, the English people are the descendants German mercenaries.

And in America, German was the second most spoken language behind English, up until ww1.

The idea of freedom they were talking about meant somethig completely different than it does today.

The English were warriors in Saxony before migrating to Britain

it meant resisting being controlled by foreign governments, through the strength and power of the government. "Freedom" meant nothing more than a powerful and self governing country. This is how Africans were still being enslaved in a "free" country. "All men are equal" means "all men have the right to a fair fight." It does not mean there aren't weaker and stronger people. In no world should a country be subjugated to another for centuries because "the law says so". Freedom = nationalism = the right to fight. Ok moving on...

This conceptualization of freedom culminated with the Nazis, which saw communsim as a force of anarchy, and hence would ultimately lead to enslavement to a foreign power.

It's been programmed to say that. Sadly, and ultimately, the rejection of "racism", means the end of freedom... because the only route to freedom, is through an ethnic identity, which will not allow itself to be subjugated by a foreign ethnic group.

If everyone is actually identical, and just another human, then it would make no sense to even have separate nations.
