Yes I think some zoo's are not safe for animals. Some are too small, and workers in some zoos just have no clue how to care for them. I think zoo's should be replaced with animal sanctuaries, bigger and better for them, and we could still visit and see them.
Oh my goodness I totally disagree with you. The animals are perfectly safe and they have so much stuff to do and, are perfectly happy. They are feed a lot, and the people there have to go to college and learn about all of the animals. Really? I actually got to go behind the scenes at my local zoo. You people actually believe this? Yes I know animals die in the zoos, and that happens. Okay? Also the animals in the zoos u see are their because they were orphans in the wild. Some zoos actually let their animals back into the wild. Sorry I really needed to let that off my chest. They aren't just for human entertainment!!! THEY ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!! I know I'm 14 but I'm smart and I want to be a zoologist someday. That's what the people u see at the zoo helping the animals.
@20sofia Are you in the US? I live in the US and I can see where you're coming from. We have some pretty great zoo's. BUT, I've seen a few zoos abroad and I've seen animals that were simply not fit to live in those areas. The certain countries I went to it was just too hot of a climate (or something else they could not control) for some of the animals and the zoo was known to have problems keeping the animals healthy. I understand its not a wide-scale thing and its "not all zoo's", but in terms of answering the question I was given either choice yes or no, not maybe or in between. So id rather keep animals in their natural habitat than have an unfortunate creature in the wrong zoo. I respect your opinion, and just because you're 14 doesn't mean you can't be right. But I will still stick to my former opinion because I'm going take a wild guess you haven't been to the unhealthy zoo's I have been to.
@20sofia Thats good that you are passionate about something. But again keep in mind not all zoo's treat animals with the care they require. Thats why I prefer sanctuaries over zoos, even though I have yet to find one in the US for wild animals instead of farm animals. Its a good theory though.
I think the funding, both Governmental and private should be encouraged, as so many are doing research on endangered species, and trying to save them! I don't like the idea of them being in 'cages' but more and more zoos are creating more 'natural-like' habitats, rather than the old-fashioned cages! Some of these zoos, and their research might be the only way that some of these species survive the destruction of their natural habitats!
no zoos should not be banned. Stupid people should be banned. im sorry for the kids who have stupid parennts. wno place their on top of railings or who climb outter fences because they want to per the prwtty kitties or the cute polar bear but on those cases. the parents should be frd to the animals as some Kibble
No, only zoos that are mistreating the animals should be banned. Anybody who thinks an animal would be better off in the wild has obviously never seen a lion eat a bison while the bison was still alive and in agony. Those animals get free food, free health care, free toys and free sex-mates. It's freakin' paradise in a zoo.
No. As long as the animals are being taken care of with the respect and dignity they deserve I think they should exist. Hopefully seeing these animals at the Zoo will continue to inspire kids to find the respect and love for them and maybe be inspired to do things to keep them alive out in the world after learning how important they are and actually seeing them in real life.
No. Why? People like to see animals. Why not have a safe environment. I don't know about all zoos but some help wounded animals that can't be in the wild anymore. Personally, my opinion, humans feel to much for animals.
No. Zoos in the recent decade or two are going through a transformation where it's less about the "spectactle" and more about saving the genetical foundation of almost extinct species. And that generally is a good thing.
Needless to say that there are the "black sheep" Zoos.
in a sense, yes. we should operate centers for conservation and rescue/rehabilitation and, in certain cases, it could be set up where people could come and interact with the inhabitants. the way zoos are now is a bad setup. they're essentially animal jail and few have effective oversite. we need to shift our relationship with other species on our planet from an "us-above-them" perspective to more of a partnership in a loose sense.
On one part they are at least safe from extinction. They get medical care & it's nice. But on the other hand it's horrible that they cannot be in the Wild. They can't ever be tamed tho. There are Zoos that should close down as they don't know how to care for the animals. Those should close down. Not the ones that take great care of the animals, like the Singapore Zoo. I love Zoos. But overall, zoos should be closed worldwide.
Personally, I don't believe it's ethical to hold a wild animal captive in such small quarters for the sake of profit and entertainment. Zoos should convert themselves into sanctuaries, caring for sick, disabled, or wounded animals that could not survive on their own in the wild. Profits should go towards helping animals and preserving habitats. Even then, it shouldn't be a permanent situation. If they can survive on their own, then they should be free to return to their natural habitat.
Usually animals are placed into zoos because those are the only facilities willing to house an animal for free. Those animals often come from survivors of accidents, poachers, natural disasters, ecosystem collapse, the list goes on.
@Wwwyzzerdd Yeah, I agree. Some zoos are really great and if you read my comment all the way through, you'd see that you really just repeated what I said. My point is that not all zoos run themselves this way. Most of the time, the animals spend their lives in captivity without it being necessary. I've been to plenty of zoos, and that's exactly why I don't go to them anymore. I've witnessed a bear showing symptoms of psychosis due to confinement, penguins that did nothing but stare at walls in their tiny exhibits, and whales that spend their lives in solitude when they're really social creatures. I just think it's sad. I don't see the point in animals being locked up unless they need to be.
I rarely go to zoos so I don't really know what to think of them. Are you feeling that they should be banned because of that incident with Harambe gorilla being killed just to save a kid?
This is one of those "I don't really care" scenarios. I don't see anything morally wrong with having zoos, so if they stayed I wouldn't care. If they go I don't really care, but if they go under the guise of it being "wrong" then that I disagree with in general.
Zoos not necessarily, but certain animal sanctuaries and hunting sanctuaries actually act as preservation for certain species because there is a monetary incentive to help the animal that would otherwise go extinct.
No why... They offer habitat for millions of animals who could not live outside in these days... It gives them staffs and people that love animals and cares about them, feed them and uses the money they have NOT ONLY to make profit but also to ensure that the animals will be maintained properly and will keep on living properously
Hell no. I know there are reports of animal depression in zoos, but the wealth flowing into conservation efforts as a result of zoos is staggering. While, yes, some people would still funnel their resources into conservation regardless, there would be a severe drop in donations if zoos were banned.
Better to have them in pale imitations of their habitat than dead because they don't have one anymore.
Zoos are horrorshows and I have nothing but disrespect for idiot parents who think it's okay to enslave hundreds of animals for life so their idiot kid can look at a giraffe for five seconds on a Sunday.
People don't think about anything. They just go through life and do what the rest of the herd is doing and they have their brains turned off at all times.
No. Unfortunately zoos might be safer than the wild since no one hunts in zoos.

yes, I think they should be banned and more natural reservations should be created instead there's one about 50km from where I live with a picnic area in the middle where you can park and spend the afternoon but you have to be careful because some animals might steal your stuff lol a rhea once stuck it's head through the car window and stole my cookies 😐
How does seeing an animal in a cage teach anything? How does forcing an animal into a small area and limiting their interaction with other animals allowing for a natural existence preserve them? Wouldn't a sanctuary be better? Wouldn't a progran showing animals in the wild and how they live be more informative?
I live in a small Caribbean island, so we don't have lions here in the wild. where we gave the lions kept at the emperor valley zoo is currently pathetic but the zoo is working on a better enclosure. I do agree that the wild would be best. but please take into consideration, some of the animals in zoos are rescued animals for example there is a white owl I believe at the evz whose name is Hercules he was a rescued animal, I think his wing is damaged so he can't fly well. some rescued animals also are incapable of adapting to wildlife and need special care. have u ever heard of Kenny the down syndrome white tiger? how is he supposed to survive on his own?
@Justacatlady If the animals were left to just live in the wildwithout the security zoos ofer what do you think would happen?
Wildlife preserves have people out trying to keep the animals safe but due to the amount of space the animals have to roam and how little funding they have there isn't enough manpower to keep the place properly secure.
And what happens when wild animals aren't secure?
Poachers.
I think I prefer the idea of a lion who knows nothing else living behind a glass wall, than a lion who knows only hardship lying dead under a poachers foot.
@CorruptedDocument - I am a "left winger" and I have always gotten that. I fully support zoos that provide ample space for the animals, that take in animals that need help adjusting back to the wild, and that study the species to enable improving life for them. And I am including the permanent exhibit animals as well treated and educational. I suggest everyone look up the Oregon Zoo and like their page to follow them. They have wonderful educational posts as well as beautiful videos of their animals.
my degree is environmental and natural resource management with a minor in communication and extension, I chose this programme because I genuinely love animals, wildlife and our natural environment as a whole, as far as the topic of zoos being used for education the post graduate course I did, took us on a field trip to the zoo. a zoo is used to teach all levels of students.
hmm thats difficult... one part of me would say YES cause even in the best zoos some species are not happy. On the other side... a living animal in a zoo is better than a dead animal somewhere in the wild
I think before we close zoos we should stop poachers all over the world... and when i say stop i mean shoot them if they even think about killing a elefant or rhino or whatever... then we could think about higher standards like compound size etc.
They're immoral yes but some of the species in captivity are near exctintion because of the age old, epidemic, fucked up reason for all the world's problems, greed. There's always some piece of shit willing to pay or be paid to shoot innocent animals for no reason other than selling body parts to the doolally Chinese or for trophies. People should be in zoo's not animals

I think you should probably visit a zoo because the care you describe is exactly what the zoo does.

Zoos provide education about these animals and work towards their preservation. Without zoos many of these animals would be extinct.
