I think it’s good that they’re showing public support but I question how genuine the post is when people don’t write a meaningful caption - especially if they didn’t have a history of supporting the black community. Like it’s possible that people are posting it because they feel obligated to not look bad or racist because we know that if they were a celebrity - especially a white one, someone would call them out on it. It makes sense because the only information people have about public figures is what they see on social media so they need to make these posts rather than keeping it a secret that they help black people. I posted a black square myself on Facebook and Instagram and I wrote a bible verse talking about how humankind (all skin colours) descended from Adam and Eve and spoke about how God says in Proverbs to speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves (the deceased minorities who died from racist attacks). I think that’s the kind of message that needs to go around than a black square alone with a hashtag for the reason that it can look genuine or not... another thing is, this black square only shows support for the black community. There’s Asians out there suffering as much racism as blacks but they get less media attention but there has never been this kind of attention to them on social media to this degree. I believe in supporting all people regardless of skin colour and educating ourselves about the non-black minorities as well.

Don't see the point. Yes it's making awareness but it's not going to do anything nor is violence and riots. Also looks ugly on your insta. I understand the anger and pain but it's only going to lead to more deaths. It's about change and the hostile approach is creating more problems. Innocent people being dragged into it, why vandlise someone's hard earned business? This isn't about justice anymore. People are using it as an excuse to cause chaos. It's sad because he isn't going to get the justice he deserves with behaviour like this.
Because people are intellectually lazy. BLM never started this nonsense. In fact, the effort was started by a "White" supremacist group who were trying to block the blm hashtag.

With people using #BlackLivesMatter to caption the blackout, the hashtag has become overrun with blank tiles, meaning that valuable news items and resources are virtually impossible to find.
Wow, all these posts mocking peaceful protest & peaceful activism, is alarming.
This is why racism still exists; a disenfranchised group is seeking equality, and they get laughed at & mocked. Disgusting.

I didn't do it. I keep my social media entirely free of politics and activism and all that. I'm a little bit wondering if people will check if I did it and think I'm a bad person or not supportive for not, but then again, I shouldn't have to prove to them that I'm not racist, especially through something like this. I see why people are doing stuff, but if it weren't for the peer pressure from this, how many do you think would actually care or post?
I felt very fake to me.
I support the black lives matter movement but I felt like for certain brands, celebrities, and especially people in my life it was good enough to just put up a picture of a black square and call it a day.I'm fine with it as it shows you are protesting as well. However, what I don't like is the fact that most of them do it because it's a "trend". I believe it could be a powerful statement however what I'd like to see is that these same people are posting links to support the cause and spreading awareness, not only posting a black picture because all of their friends are. Hope this helped :)
They want to show people they care and people are saying black out your social media. They don’t understand why but they listen because they don’t know what else to do.
I think it’s the most useless virtue signaling I’ve seen. I don’t need my white friends to stop posting cat pics. I need to see people’s hearts change and to see past harmful biases. Some stupid box isn’t going to help.It floods the hashtags, erasing important information that people are/may be looking for. Social media has been covering the most news about the protests, about donations and signing petitions.
But black square posts are just gonna be deleted a month from now, ‘cause it doesn’t fit an account’s aesthetic.By itself it doesn't do much. However it's supposed to spread awareness and shift focus to posts involving BLM and drive traffic towards donations and make black businesses and content more visible. The fact that we are talking about it means it's working, but it will only keep working if people actually act and contribute in other ways. It's an awareness tool, not much more. For things to change more has to be done. The posts are just one way of motivation.
They are mostly sheep. Why didn't they care until now? Now that is trendy they do it to gain sympathy. I get the young ones may feel more in line with the adults as serious subjects may have not concered them until now, but those who are past 25 have been aware of this problem and most didn't do anything until now
While I can appreciate social media as a platform, I don't get how posting a million black squares is going to prompt change. It just comes off as empty virtue signaling.
Well you are talking about it so the message got across...
The issue is people tagging it with #blacklivesmatter instead of just #blackouttuesday. It's crowding important videos and information."Virtue signal acknowledged."
While it's better than nothing it doesn't have the power of a March or protest or even a petition.I actually complained about this on my story. people all the sudden act like they care even tho they said nothing before lmao. It’s all appearances, “everybody does it so I will too”. Sheeple.
It really confused me today. I though the picture was taking too long to load something was wrong with my wifi
I think people do this in solidarity to protest but like not protesting like other people that took to the streets and protested instead they protest on social media by posting that screen on instagram
I haven't heard of this but it seems like a good idea to me.
You say "lease effort" but because it is so visually simple and pure, uncluttered like many photos are, I think it will make a powerful statement.This... 😆😆😆
I mean... I think it's good and a sign that shows people care. I think it would be more productive if they shared a (an unbiased) news article and maybe write some sort of statement about it.
I saw some people posting a white screen just to fuck with those people.
i think it's horrible bullshit. it spreads the idea that social inequality is somehow "the fault of white people". white guilt and white privilige are very dangerous and wrong ideas to have. those ideas got hitler his power.
Thank You for mentioning this. I thought my Instagram just wouldn't refresh!
It’s for Business to show solidarity by not releasing anything. People took the message wrong and ran with it.
