What do you think about the people that are post a black screen Instagram to show they care?

I think it’s good that they’re showing public support but I question how genuine the post is when people don’t write a meaningful caption - especially if they didn’t have a history of supporting the black community. Like it’s possible that people are posting it because they feel obligated to not look bad or racist because we know that if they were a celebrity - especially a white one, someone would call them out on it. It makes sense because the only information people have about public figures is what they see on social media so they need to make these posts rather than keeping it a secret that they help black people. I posted a black square myself on Facebook and Instagram and I wrote a bible verse talking about how humankind (all skin colours) descended from Adam and Eve and spoke about how God says in Proverbs to speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves (the deceased minorities who died from racist attacks). I think that’s the kind of message that needs to go around than a black square alone with a hashtag for the reason that it can look genuine or not... another thing is, this black square only shows support for the black community. There’s Asians out there suffering as much racism as blacks but they get less media attention but there has never been this kind of attention to them on social media to this degree. I believe in supporting all people regardless of skin colour and educating ourselves about the non-black minorities as well.
I didn't say they couldn't be. I think that's possible too since there's scientific evidence that the human race originated in Africa and dispersed. Plus, depending on where they lived in for centuries, the environment can impact their skin colour.
Don't see the point. Yes it's making awareness but it's not going to do anything nor is violence and riots. Also looks ugly on your insta. I understand the anger and pain but it's only going to lead to more deaths. It's about change and the hostile approach is creating more problems. Innocent people being dragged into it, why vandlise someone's hard earned business? This isn't about justice anymore. People are using it as an excuse to cause chaos. It's sad because he isn't going to get the justice he deserves with behaviour like this.
Because people are intellectually lazy. BLM never started this nonsense. In fact, the effort was started by a "White" supremacist group who were trying to block the blm hashtag.

With people using #BlackLivesMatter to caption the blackout, the hashtag has become overrun with blank tiles, meaning that valuable news items and resources are virtually impossible to find.
Wow, all these posts mocking peaceful protest & peaceful activism, is alarming.
This is why racism still exists; a disenfranchised group is seeking equality, and they get laughed at & mocked. Disgusting.

I didn't do it. I keep my social media entirely free of politics and activism and all that. I'm a little bit wondering if people will check if I did it and think I'm a bad person or not supportive for not, but then again, I shouldn't have to prove to them that I'm not racist, especially through something like this. I see why people are doing stuff, but if it weren't for the peer pressure from this, how many do you think would actually care or post?
Very true. I saw this post that said, "Before jumping on the Blackout Tuesday trend, ask yourself whether it's your goal to dismantle racist systems, or if it's to broadcast to your community that you're one of the "good white people"?
@caligirl03 Right. I can support the BLM movement in other, more helpful ways. Posting the black screen would just be "virtue signaling" on my part.
I felt very fake to me.
I support the black lives matter movement but I felt like for certain brands, celebrities, and especially people in my life it was good enough to just put up a picture of a black square and call it a day.
I'm fine with it as it shows you are protesting as well. However, what I don't like is the fact that most of them do it because it's a "trend". I believe it could be a powerful statement however what I'd like to see is that these same people are posting links to support the cause and spreading awareness, not only posting a black picture because all of their friends are. Hope this helped :)
They want to show people they care and people are saying black out your social media. They don’t understand why but they listen because they don’t know what else to do.
I think it’s the most useless virtue signaling I’ve seen. I don’t need my white friends to stop posting cat pics. I need to see people’s hearts change and to see past harmful biases. Some stupid box isn’t going to help.
It floods the hashtags, erasing important information that people are/may be looking for. Social media has been covering the most news about the protests, about donations and signing petitions.
But black square posts are just gonna be deleted a month from now, ‘cause it doesn’t fit an account’s aesthetic.
By itself it doesn't do much. However it's supposed to spread awareness and shift focus to posts involving BLM and drive traffic towards donations and make black businesses and content more visible. The fact that we are talking about it means it's working, but it will only keep working if people actually act and contribute in other ways. It's an awareness tool, not much more. For things to change more has to be done. The posts are just one way of motivation.
They are mostly sheep. Why didn't they care until now? Now that is trendy they do it to gain sympathy. I get the young ones may feel more in line with the adults as serious subjects may have not concered them until now, but those who are past 25 have been aware of this problem and most didn't do anything until now
Wtf are you talking about?
While I can appreciate social media as a platform, I don't get how posting a million black squares is going to prompt change. It just comes off as empty virtue signaling.
That all the little sheeple are doing to avoid criticism and actually doing something that will instigate real change.
Yup but everyone’s still gotta jump on that bandwagon 🙄
Well you are talking about it so the message got across...
The issue is people tagging it with #blacklivesmatter instead of just #blackouttuesday. It's crowding important videos and information.
I would be talking about the people that showed up to the rally to just take selfies and get more like, or the girl that pretended bored up a wall and then later leave in her Benz (she apparently own a makeup company) but yeah me pointing out these situations doesn’t mean it’s bring attention to it (I’m sure the constant news coverage and the riots is enough) it just goes to show that we live I a very superficial time and we just want to appear like we care.
Yeah there will always be people that just do it because everyone else is. But I hope that at least some will see it and be like hey what's this about and follow links. A lot of people don't know about the shit going on at the peaceful protests because the riots are taking the light away from it
Stricter rules to get into the police force. Stricter punishments for abusing power.
Doesn't mean they can't have stricter rules and punishments...
"Virtue signal acknowledged."
While it's better than nothing it doesn't have the power of a March or protest or even a petition.
I actually complained about this on my story. people all the sudden act like they care even tho they said nothing before lmao. It’s all appearances, “everybody does it so I will too”. Sheeple.
It really confused me today. I though the picture was taking too long to load something was wrong with my wifi
Haha same! Didn’t get the memo
I think people do this in solidarity to protest but like not protesting like other people that took to the streets and protested instead they protest on social media by posting that screen on instagram
I haven't heard of this but it seems like a good idea to me.
You say "lease effort" but because it is so visually simple and pure, uncluttered like many photos are, I think it will make a powerful statement.
This... 😆😆😆
I mean... I think it's good and a sign that shows people care. I think it would be more productive if they shared a (an unbiased) news article and maybe write some sort of statement about it.
I saw some people posting a white screen just to fuck with those people.
Wtf!
i think it's horrible bullshit. it spreads the idea that social inequality is somehow "the fault of white people". white guilt and white privilige are very dangerous and wrong ideas to have. those ideas got hitler his power.
Thank You for mentioning this. I thought my Instagram just wouldn't refresh!
It’s for Business to show solidarity by not releasing anything. People took the message wrong and ran with it.
I mean what is it going to do? Raising awareness is fair enough, but I highly doubt more than half of the people who uploaded a black square actually care about the situation and are only doing it to make their Instagram feeds look good for one day.
I tend to think about it as the minimal effort necessary to make them feel like they did their part.
Instagram seems like a pretty stupid app and when people use it I think of them as self-important faggots.
the movement doesn’t have leadership like Martin Luther king. So they come up with useless shit like this. There needs to be boycotts, and the black community needs to stop the black on black crime. If they want real change to fight the system.
It's blackout Tuesday that means leave social media as well everyone still active so they ain't doing it right.
TO damn little to late. People talk change but everyone's full of it. No one wants real change that means changing social standing and making it difficult. No the black screen proves nothing other then people are supporting the flavor of the week
Further evidence that Instagram is leading our country into Idiocracy. Oh wait! We're already there!
Most of them are attention Seekers like influencers
Is that about that black guy that got killed by that white cop?
I don't think it does much.
It's similar to the people burning police cars.
They're paid for by tax dollars.
I already gave my thoughts on this in another post.
But bottom line it's stupid and doesn't do Jack crap.
and yet, right wing people, can't stay 3 months, inside, because of a virus
while, anne frank, HAD to stay in an attic for 2 years
replicate what times?
where she had to stay in an attic for 2 years?
uh. because she was fearing for her life, of being persecuted, for who she is
Keep in mind, im jewish, myself
I'm an agnostic jew, but, still considered a jew
oh, i know. everyone always blames us, because to them, we seem "invincible"
we're not
they blame us, because we seem invincible to them
im agnostic. i question the existence of god, i just celebrate jewish high holidays and take the bible with a grain of salt
It was just for one day and it gets the message out
It's just bandwagon following to make it look like you care.
If that’s how they want to show their support then that’s up to them
I unfollowed everyone who posted that crap. Good riddance!
Most whites that have done this have been racist before just being a sheep to the rest of the world
Their best profile picture to date...
A black screen is either out of ignorance, or they have nothing to say. A pretty stupid thing to deliberately post
I would hope they had posted it in a sincere manner. If so I would think they're an empathetic person.
It's a little too much.
Seems stupid and lazy.
Nothing but virtue signaling.
useless virtue signaling
Just trying to get some attention...
If I dont have to see or hear them blackout people
beautiful pixels
That's what that is?
That's no big deal
Reeetarded
I can't breathe...
Who cares
