There has been a recent increase of firings for people being racist online via social media. Do you agree these people should lose their jobs? (Page 4)
Perhaps criticizing a race is problematic and I feel no sympathy for those who lose their jobs over it. But criticizing a destructive movement (such as BLM) that preaches art censorship, anti-white rhetoric and vandalism should be encouraged, and I’d happily contribute online to any poor soul who lost their job for having moral values 💻💶
Laws regarding at-will employment really need a rework. In no sane society should you be fired for an opinion (or for smoking weed on your *OFF* time..)
Free speech rights also need to be expanded so they protect you from more than just the government. Corporations are getting too much power over our lives and that needs to be curtailed.
This: "Laws regarding at-will employment really need a rework. In no sane society should you be fired for an opinion" is niot something you really want.
You have a First Amendment right to say whatever your want but you do NOT have a constitutional right to be protected from the subsequent consequences which includes other's First Amendment rights to disagree with you and not want to associate with you.
Let's say you own a company and have an employee who says or does thing that alienates your customers or creates a work environment that is adversely affecting your other employees. In your idealistic world, you can't do squat. In reality, you'll want that employee to be separated from your company because he or she is costing you time, money, and aggravation having to deal with the drama in your workplace.
@abc3643 Posting "white lives matter" on social media doesn't do jack to the business.
I would never have a problem with my employees having an opinion so long as they just focused on their work and kept the debates and whatnot to their off hours.
@abc3643 as I keep saying, it's about nuance. It's understandable not to want racist employees, but saying you don't like a particular movement isn't reasonable grounds for firing someone in my opinion. The US likes to hark on about its alleged freedoms. Freedoms for corporations to totally screw you over. If you get fired, you're literally fucked. And you can get fired for pretty much nothing there.
Like I said elsewhere, too. The business doesn't give a shit about you, or the movement itself, and only pays lipservice to what ever is politically trendy to keep its customer base happy. In essence, it's not acting out of any benevolence.
I still don't get why the freedom thing is actually believed. How can freedom be so narrowly defined? At least we have some sort of employee protection here. Well I mean, at the moment...
@Levin THIS: " In essence, it's not acting out of any benevolence."
Yes, for the most part, that is true and has been since the Reagan Administration begain in 1981. That is when "Greed Is Good" began and unions were attacked and it all became about the bottom line. Legally so too. Gotta make money for the stockholders... so, if firing 5% increases stock value by 4% (and increases your bottom line with a performance bonus), then so be it.
Sadly, this is mostly still true which is why I am a contractor now. I get no benefits or sick time. I work, I get paid. I don't work, I don't get paid. So, if I want 5 weeks of vacation a year, I'm going to give myself 5 weeks unpaid vacation a year with no guilt... (as long as that does not put a burden on the project).
All of that said, Bernie and the young left have recognized this and SOME companies are turning around. It will change for the better - at least for a generation or two until the next Reagan comes along to fuck everything up.
I'm ok with this because it's been like this forever. What you post online is there forever so if you post some racist stuff and your employers see it well then good luck.
It's also not just racist stuff. It can be anything. Like I knew someone that basically posted how much he hated his employer. And then when they found out of course he got canned.
no they shouldn't people are being fired for having used the word "n**" like 20 years ago on twitter... this is unacceptable.
being a racist isn't illegal. if you are in a position, where you being racist segregates people (human resource and such), i agree you should be fired but not in positions where it doesn't matter.
Speech and expression has consequences. Many people don’t realize in this age of broadcast thyself, in a lot of cases they’re figuratively sticking a gun in their mouth and pulling the trigger.
democracy depends on the ability to share our honest opinions without consequence. if we can't do that then we can't be in a democracy. eventually people will stop talking. and people who have been forced to stop talking? well... they have the right to violence
Your job is not the government. If you do some racist stuff your job can lose revenue because of your racism. People who say they have a 1st amendment right to be racist are correct. But what they get confused is their job is not the government. They are a private company and money is their first concern.
Not trying to excuse peoples actions but i feel what people do outside of work is their own business. If it doesn't effect the work they do then i see no reason to punish them. To me its the same as firing someone because they dont put the toilet seat down. But as i said, if it happened at the workplace then thats different
So if your HR representatives or hiring manager is racist then you think it's better to keep them and face lawsuits because you knew than fire them? There's some places where you can teach people but some jobs shouldn't be open to people with certain mindsets. I worked on a fair housing site for a bit and they fired a guy years before me because a person looking at the property asked which neighbors were the "best" (then kept alluding to how to avoid black parts despite the fact it was a private community with strict guidelines) and he told him. What he did could have become a federal office and violated housing laws.
@Hypnos0929 did you read what i typed? i didn't say dont fire racist people.. i just think it is not productive way for solution.. it doesn't solve anything other than saving our asses.. look, if you have a co-worker with this mindset, try to change his mindset. dont fire him entirely out of business. not all people reach the light as you do.. some people raised certain way in their life. they have a right to live and earn money... if you take it away like this. you will make them angry more then he was in the job.
whenever you notice anything like this.. give out 2 options. either you stop this. or we will have to fire you.. its that simple. we can communicate right?
You realize you're talking in circles right? You're saying "Don't fire the racist person, teach them instead". So in the meantime what do you think is gonna happen? You think they'll stop being racist? And when you're a manager a racist is a liability, not your personal pet project for you to change. This is why companies do so many seminars and meetings on things like online presence and sexual harassment almost semi-annually or before you even start the job.
@Hypnos0929 then do more decent research before hiring people.
you dont think like a racist person.. lets say im racist. i do racist stuff.. one morning i come to work and my employer fires me the because very reason i already hate. lets say in this case hispanic peeps. he comes to me and says 'mate we got sick of you being racist. there is the door.. pack your stuff and bugger of" then what would you think im gonna do? i'll go to internet... and whinge about i got fired.. because some hispaniards stealing our jobs etc.. and spread the hate bubble...
so what im suggesting is.. either take serious procautions. apply better sentences.. like if you are racist.. lets say community service. let them gather litter under the bridge or park for a year or so.. or make them pay hefty fee.. but firing someone just makes the problem go away for the business owner.. not the damn community. that person is still in the streets doing racist stuff all around the town since he is out of the job..
And that's why your thinking is completely wrong. Racist people don't change until they are forced to. That guy who hates Latinos was never going to listen to you because he knew the consequences of his actions and didn't care. Like I said before as a manager a racist is a liability not a pet project.
No it doesn't but it gets rid of a racist from your company and teaches them their behavior won't be tolerated. Like a kid yelling in a candy story you can't just by them candy and look to teach them later, especially if they yelled knowing that there would be consequences.
Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. People are free to say what they want but they have to answer for it. It just means they won’t get thrown in prison.
It’s bullshit that people try to hide behind free speech. Imagine if a guy shouts the wrong name out in bed and when his girlfriend goes ape shit at him he says why u getting mad, it’s freedom of speech!
It's wrong but because the definition of racism is very broad these days. For instance coal miners in a photo from from the 1960's was called racist because the miners had black faces. I'm like realy people they are mingling fucking coal get a famn grip
Free speech is more important than feelings. Cancel culture is creating a chilling effect which is stifling the free exchange of idea. it's moral-hazard to fire someone for wrong think. I say this as an atheist that remembers the time Christians had the moral stronghold on the US. I'm afraid of blowback in the future.
Actually it's not all about feelings. It's all about morals. I have nothing to do about Christians having a more stronghold because we all need a more phone calls. It doesn't matter if it's this country or any other country. If you know you're doing something that is improper and incorrect, then is less to do about free speech and more to do about the intent. There's a good reason why in some countries like in Japan, China, etc, take stuff like this very seriously. If you were caught in adultery yes you deserve to have everybody to know your business. Because now it affects other people. I don't agree with everything else that tries to change the historical landscape of something. But what I don't like is the hypocrisy. These rules apply to everybody and not who they want to make an example out of. I wouldn't go as far to say it's a moral hazard. But I will say that the person definitely should be brought into review if not suspension. And only to be fired when proven to be hazardous.
@btbc92 So what happens when a person lies? and groups people ignore the truth for personal gain. Using smearing to destroy your "enemy" has been done for as long as human civilization existed. It's a moral-hazard.
It's not a moral hazard. If a person lies they need to be reprimended for the lie, and the group who ignore these things needs to be handled. These things go unchecked because nobody opens up theor mouth and say something. And can't do so without physical threats. Any form of smearing being done should be handled appropriately. If somebody is doing something they should not be doing, they should be handled.
I had plenty of people try to use lies to smear at me for things I didn't do. Only to find out they were doing the things they accused me of. You can gaurentee my intuition told me who I dealt with. And the few that did get caught, you can be sure I was glad somebody took legal action. One whom was caught for fraud for the span of the years I was there. And I was but a teen. They never believed a "kid". Thank God an adult employee of that place stepped up and blew the whistle.
I would gather every person accused in one setting and make sure every person called by name is in. Both privately and in a group. I would have each person speak about what is being said and done, with physical evidence also given. Otherwise it's heresay.
With evidence given, I would evulate without biased what is being said and look of it meets free speech or not. If the person is directly targeting the other, I would talk to them about why they are doing it. Then I will speak to the target equally in private. If found that both are at fault, both will be handled with a warning.
Now with heresay, I will do similar. Bout I would have them in a group to speak freely. No different than I do here. And if I find discrepancies on either end. Again, the people I see are in the wrong will be reprimanded with a warning. Or find a compromise. If neither or complies, they are fired. Point blink. No VIP exemptions here.
Everybody will be held yo accountability to decide what kind of work place they wish to have, or deal with the problem. Because of I have to step in, there will be fireworks going off, and where it hits it will hit. Don't want that, get along or don't work here. If there is bullying if any kind, somebody is going to lose a paycheck. That's for sure. They can get their lawyer, court, gov, whoever, if I was the boss, what I say goes as long it complies to law, or get out.
And this is why things going where it goes on and why people end up losing their job. And about having enough problems in the world. Because having enough problems in the world ain't going to fix itself if you don't fix the problems already right in front of you. Thanks what goes on in your space before you try to fix problems in other people's spaces.
Because remember. You just said that we have enough problems in the world to care about a trial based on hurt feelings. Well then there should be no hurt feelings if somebody ends up losing their job, or get kicked out of school.
This is exactly what I'm talking about people being Hypocrites when they want to say everything isn't black and white. But it's only black and white when it only benefits and appeals to them. No, either your all in or your completely out. Don't have one foot in one door and one foot out also.
I don't see how you been an atheist have anything to do with goes on in your job? No blasphemy has long existed way before you and I were ever born onto this planet. People are going to judge you by the things that you do. Not your religious or a irreligious affiliation unless he's done out of prejudice. What's right is right and what's wrong is wrong. That's how it goes in this world. Nobody cares about all that silly stuff. And this is coming from a Christian.
@btbc92 atheism has to do with an absence of a belief ( god in this case) it has a lot in common with having other lack of beliefs because I'm aware you can choose to not subscribe to somthing. in this case Social justice ( which I consider to be a religion also) For me my lack of belief in god ( for me since a child) has made me into what I am today, a skepic. I firmly understand the power of having to be forced to choose in believing in something I don't want to, because I have experienced it. I have also experience what repentance is for going against the grain.
Again, what does atheism have anything to do with it? Nothing. Everything in this world is religion. But I can't tell you this that God have nothing to do with religion. He is what he is no different than We Are Who We Are. The point I am making to you is that if people have a certain rule or law that must be followed no matter what jurisdiction you're in, you have a choice to either follow that rule along or you don't. And if you got caught singing and doing things that is out of line, that has nothing to do with the message you're trying to present out of bad intent, then you're going to be reprimanded by that standard. That goes for anybody. Atheism, religion, Faith, beliefs, Etc have zero to do with it.
I'm pretty sure your job, your school, or wherever it is that you go to is not going to care if you're religious, not religious, believe in God, or not unless you come with an agenda of your own. And the case of the question by the Asker, a d what she posted. The person addressed for her hate for Chinese people because of the virus, etc is relevant. The hate is the problem. Not so much what she said. Especially when she tries to speak for everybody. That's why she was removed, exposed and publically humillated.
@btbc92 I don't like Dogma imposed on me. "The greater the dogma the greater the ignorance." I rather be dead, or jailed then to be forced to bow to dogma.
Then don't go to work, school or affiliate with the outside world. Become a hermit if it makes you feel better. You apparently have a lot of Hang-Ups about Christianity and everything else because that's the first thing you wanted to put up in your original post. I'm telling you as a person regardless if anybody's picking on not what it is is what it is and if you don't like it then that's too bad. This has nothing to do with Christianity or religion or your atheism. This have to do with laws. And you don't have to like laws no different than I don't have to like certain laws. What if a law comes to pass is no longer about what I like. I have a choice just like you have a choice. As the argument still stands, people are getting fired for racist comments Etc again that doesn't reflect on a message being presented, and this is what we're talkin about. Not about who's who.
@btbc92 With the way things are going, the West is going to have another Great schism. I've read and seen history before. "The poetry that comes from the squaring off between And the circling is worth it Finding beauty in the dissonance"
Correction @beefy40, the entire world is in BIG trouble. And this is what we "Christians" tried to warn you for eons. Now you asked for what hmmay of you now don't want. It's already happening. All of us are screwed.
The world has more than just white peoples in it, and that mean companies have a variety of races as their customers to have a racist or bigot of any kind on staff is bad for business and the companies reputation as a whole, it may drive minority customers to other businesses
If they are dumb enough to post ignorant stuff they should be repercussions and I’m about to piss off all the conservatives in here but there should be some limits on freedom of speech now the first story wasn’t as bad as other ones I’ve seen but that second women should have definitely lost her job and should have been banned from whatever platform she was using she was just saying the most disrespectful and ignorant things she could say and just fueling white supremacy
I know you so wish you are pushing off all Conservatives. Most of us are laughing at you. We already know where the country is going and are prepared for it. We make money. We save our money. And most of us know truth, like this from sports analyst black man Jason Whitlock. www.theblaze.com/.../whitlock-veneration-of-george-floyd-is-racist-and-must-be-stopped
Who said I was pushing off conservatives 😂I just shared my opinion on the topic it’s not my fault that conservatives want to live in a country where a white person can threaten and troll a black person online or in real life without any repercussions
If you got the balls to walk up to a person of color, sexual origin, or whatever else, because YOU, personally feel they DO NOT FIT the narrative dictated to you by talking points or talking heads from a certain news organization or news affiliation, or go by with what your friends (or so called friends say) Blind leading the Blind - and you alienate someones personal space because of their color, and you are caught on camera doing so, then you deserve what you get..
They shouldn't be but companies have taken the position that what their employees say in public or on social media also reflects on the company, i. e. since John Doe says this and works at XYZA, Inc., then XYZA, Inc. must be that way too since they hired him. That's part of the reason more and more companies searches for social media posts of any prospective employee nowadays.
Of course. Having a racist employed at your businessis bad PR for you and will potentially scare away customers. Freedom of speech doesn't protect you from consequences of your speech.
Which is precisely why the racists are so petrified of becoming a minority.
Two major elements of power become lost when a group that was the majority becomes the minority:
1) voting power 2) spending power
The “spending power” is what is takin place in terms of this question. Companies know the demographic shifts, and they know that alienating certain groups of the population is dire for profits and growth.

when someone got fired because they are racist.. you send them straight to the street where they can be more racist and hatefull..
so if you keep them and educate them instead of firing... you might get a chance of make him understand the problematic behavior they are having..
otherwise it is not a solution to firing people.. it will make them even worse then before.
So if your HR representatives or hiring manager is racist then you think it's better to keep them and face lawsuits because you knew than fire them?
There's some places where you can teach people but some jobs shouldn't be open to people with certain mindsets. They have a right to speak as they choose. Their employer has the right to dismiss them if they are found obnoxious.
democracy can't survive like that for long
Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. People are free to say what they want but they have to answer for it. It just means they won’t get thrown in prison.

@btbc92 lol I think we have enough problem in the world to care about a trial based on hurt feelings. it's such as waste of time.
And this is why things going where it goes on and why people end up losing their job. And about having enough problems in the world. Because having enough problems in the world ain't going to fix itself if you don't fix the problems already right in front of you. Thanks what goes on in your space before you try to fix problems in other people's spaces.
Fix*
Because remember. You just said that we have enough problems in the world to care about a trial based on hurt feelings. Well then there should be no hurt feelings if somebody ends up losing their job, or get kicked out of school.
This is exactly what I'm talking about people being Hypocrites when they want to say everything isn't black and white. But it's only black and white when it only benefits and appeals to them. No, either your all in or your completely out. Don't have one foot in one door and one foot out also.
@btbc92 I'm an atheist, the entire reason the term Blasphamy exist is because of people like me! I don't see a large diffrence.
The laws doesn't care about your feelings remember?
Saying*
"The poetry that comes from the squaring off between
And the circling is worth it
Finding beauty in the dissonance"
Correction @beefy40, the entire world is in BIG trouble. And this is what we "Christians" tried to warn you for eons. Now you asked for what hmmay of you now don't want. It's already happening. All of us are screwed.
Many*
Welcome to A Whole New World when now your rights are going to forcefully be taken away.
Autocorrect hit me and I didn’t proofread. I meant to say “pissing”
Yes.
Of course. Having a racist employed at your business is bad PR for you and will potentially scare away customers. Freedom of speech doesn't protect you from consequences of your speech.
Which is precisely why the racists are so petrified of becoming a minority.
Two major elements of power become lost when a group that was the majority becomes the minority:
1) voting power
2) spending power
The “spending power” is what is takin place in terms of this question. Companies know the demographic shifts, and they know that alienating certain groups of the population is dire for profits and growth.
Having an opinion (especially a valid one) should not be punished.
Saying “Burn all blacks” would be a racial hate speak and should be reprimanded but that isn’t what most people are getting fired over.
White people are attacked openly online and in real life all the time (mostly by blacks) and they are NEVER punished.
Stating that white lives matter isn’t racist. It shouldn't be punished.
If you don't want to suffer the consequences of being a piece of shit then don't act shitty
democracy depends on the right to offend eachother without consequence, or we can't have democracy
if people can't share their opinions then violence is their inevitable choice... and their right
@007kingifrit let's let XKCD explain this.
that doesn't respond to what i said at all, i didn't question what was and wasn't protected by the constitution
i said democracy cannot survive if we don't have the right to offend eachother without consequence
@007kingifrit that isn't how that works, there are an have always been social consequences for what you say and do.
If you repeatedly make an ass of yourself even in a democratic country you alienate people.
This isn't new, this isn't a hard concept to grasp.
It's just now since the civil rights movement, being openly racist can have social consequences.
In the past being a certain race or religion could get you ostracized, now it's being a bigot
what's new is the mob mentality and the technology that allows them to make it. this is new
and democracy cannot take this for long. we need new updated protections in the social media age
