Why do most people use their emotions instead of rstonality?

Question

I see most people are emotional and use their emotions to make decisions rather than rationality. This is the case with many women.

A perfect example of this is rape. People get emotional about this topic and angry when someone says that there are worse crimes like murder or blinding someone. They are prejudiced and can't accept others opinions, they are mentally unstable.

I like your follow-up on this because I was actually shocked reading all the reactions towards your question concerning rape.

And I never read the responses before I respond myself just to keep it honest.

I made a response basically that wasn't similar to others as I know the realities and I use logic in answering things although some things might be my achilles heel when it comes to it emotional response especially if it's something concerning the abuse of animals because I understand that they're life matters as well other people might say "oh it's just a dog oh it's just a cat" but I guarantee you their soul and their nerves and their brain are capable of feeling pain and suffering and hunger the same way as humans are if not even more as they don't understand all the reasons behind their current situation and they have no capability of understanding that tomorrow will be better.

In my life I've had times where I don't have enough for all my dogs and me to eat but I always make sure that they eat and I'll not eat because I know that tomorrow I will. If I'm waiting on somebody to pay me or my salary is to be paid, so I choose to not because I know that my mental capacity can take it in the knowing that I will eat tomorrow but I would never leave them to not eat because they don't understand that. If I don't eat now, I know it'll be okay in a little bit and Ican eat tomorrow. I know what tomorrow is, I can understand what tomorrow is therefore I choose to buy them food and go without not often but it's happened several times at least twice, three times a year, but to leave them sitting there waiting for their dinner and then to not be fed and the stress that they might feel and the friendships that are very fickle amongst dogs specially when you have 18, I do not want them fighting and causing irreversible damage in the structure of what I have built therefore I would much rather go without than have to deal with the repercussions of leaving them to starve.

I have not looked through all the answers dealing with the rape question but I did look through many and I was shocked by how much people don't actually understand what real pain is and real suffering is. This is not about me whatsoever but to not be able to walk as I have experienced for 4 months was was indescribable yeah call me a pussy but even though I knew I would walk again it was just the most frustrating feeling you could imagine. When I was walking around and moving around on crutches I was manic even to where my girlfriend said don't go so fast as if people were going to think I am odd/goofy as we were going through the shopping mall and I was moving as fast as I could just out of giddiness ,(is that a word).

people that responded as if rape was the ultimate crime obviously have suffered very little in their life and it's almost as if they are trying to be like a white knight mentality which in reality is just another way to get laid. I read that to myself and it sounds really brutal but sorry I'm not really a prick I'm like one of the most compassionate people in the world and you would know that if you knew me. Strong people actually do not suffer from PTSD as it's out of sight out of mind get over it you think that's brutal fuck it I know the realities of it I can't even fathom getting run over by a car again and it seems very foreign to me because I'm not in that moment but I do remember at the time how bad it actually felt but that's in his that's in the past move on and I rarely ever think about it, and I have no fear of getting on my motorcycle and driving again, because I use logic and realize that what happened to me what's a fluke was a rare occurrence and it won't happen again but if it does, I'll get through it and I'll be okay.

Emotions are obviously normal and beneficial. But they aren't rational. One could say that emotion is an altered state like being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. One shouldn't make important decisions while emotional.

Phobias are based on emotion. Emotions can be deceiving. We aren't always aware of their origins. Many were internalized during childhood before we had the ability to reason.
And the easiest way to manipulate someone is through emotion.

Reacting to someone's pain and suffering is healthy. But I agree 100% that people need also employ reason.
People who believe certain things so thoroughly that those beliefs become internalized as emotions suffer from cognitive dissonance when confronted with reality. They get angry. They can't open their minds and consider information that conflicts with their beliefs. They abandon the ability to reason.

I see "belief" as immutable, whereas opinions can be changed or modified as more information becomes available. I don't understand why some people are incapable of using reason to analyze their emotions and modify their beliefs. In the end, cold, hard, objective reasoning is the only way to be a rational human being.

If you haven't seen this to happen Infront your own eyes then you discuss this topic like there isn't anything wrong with it. Like emotions and such.

But when on the other side a person who has seen this he doesn't want to talk about it. And calling people mentally unstable because they went through something really mature.

Like sure was fun for me to fight your wars so you can sleep at night peacefully. Was really great indeed seeing people die or trying just to survive another day and for what to be called mentally ustable. You want me to scale which is worse I'm tell you people who think rape isn't such a bad thing. That kind of a people are the worst to justify such things.

If seen all kinds of monsters out there like it will definitely traumatiz you for the rest of your life. And you want me to justify some of them that what they are doing isn't wrong? Like hell noooo.

And then someone wants me to basically put on scale which is worse then the other?

None of them are correct. You can't force this kind of opinion on others like think for a second there? Is rape somethig you expect us to accept like it's a normal thing?

I may have PTSD and other issues but that's because all you can sleep safely at night! While people like me can't sleep at all. So excuse me for defending myself and my opinion.

I've counselled people who are survivors of rape and/or abuse. Decades later these survivors are often still traumatised. I've also spoken to family members of murdered people. While the trauma is considered to be "more" (utter bullshit by the way) at the time of loss, the long term impact is - in most cases - lower, with the exception of situations where the family member was present and is also suffering from "survivor's guilt".

Rape and abuse survivors often suffer a deeper psychological impact that is more complex than shorter term counselling can restore. Every time these survivors look in the mirror they face the question of "why". Could they have done more. Done differently.

It's emotive.

You can't separate emotion from your existence. It's impossible. You can argue with the use of semantics all you want, but there is something deeper than simple emotion that is understood by the word "soul". I happen to be a Christian, but if I'm referring to something at that level I say "spirit", where I say "soul" to refer to the deepest level of emotional experience.

I've generally found people who try to claim they have greater "stability" than a rape survivor are actually more mentally unhinged

I think we try to force logic too much and neglect that most human thought and behavior, even when superficially logical, is driven or at least influenced by our emotions, whether we consciously realize it in ourselves or not. It’d be nice to be able to just “go by the numbers”, but I think that’s pretty futile because that’s just not who we are as beings. We have so much going on in our own egos that we don’t even get, we’re ultimately trying to avoid pain, fear, and shame, that’s what truly steers us, then our conscious minds lie to us and tell us we’re just going by the facts.

I think its normal for people to get emotional about things. I will be the first to admit that I am a huge softie and I'm a really emotional person and I feel even more bad if I make a mistake any my manager or someone else tried highlighting the mistake too much. I think it can be challenging to be rational at times especially if someone is being aggressive or is getting angry at you for some reason because you try to be professional or maybe you get defensive depending on the situation. I think this also applies to rape since it leaves a huge mental scar on the victim and it can leave a huge emotional strain as well.

I think many have a very strong passion for different topics, especially ones that are the closest to them. Some could involve dealing with a cancer related death, others could involve a rape while others involve abuse... And everything goes back to personal experience. The closer it is to the person, the more passionate they are about it.

And their passion can blind them to the other realities that exist. Which is worse drunk drivers that kill people or rapists? That's a tough question sometimes with varying opinions... One the side, one lives while the other dies in other cases it's not as clean cut as that..

Peoples opinions and personal bias are very complicated sometimes...

Yes, murder is worse than rape. Blinding someone would be worse as well, as would deliberately setting out to ruin someone's reputation, so that they end up losing all they have. Abortion is also far worse than rape, because it's basically murder.
And yes, far, FAR too many people these days allow their emotions to dictate their moral values and what they believe to be true. They seem to think that if something "doesn't feel right" it cannot be right, which is patently and utterly absurd.

Rationality id a very difficult matter. Most people get overwhelmed by their emotions because they are not knowledgeable or are not aware of its effects. Consciously, we realize we are being too emotional, but we can't ignore it either. People tend to be emotional because being emotional feels right to them, they don't stop to rationally. Emotions are a coping mechanism to most and so they can't just get over it unless they are trained to do so or are innately able to cast aside their emotions.

The rational mind is the newest part of the brain, the neo-cortex - the part of the brain that has executive function. It's tint and new. The emotional brain is huge and ancient and is often referred to as the limbic part of the brain. This is where fear, lust and - if you were using the psychologist's Maslow hierarchy of needs, represents the bottom part of the pyramid, much larger and older and concerned with getting shelter, sex and food.
Pyschologists can now see how much of the brain functions using PET ( positive emission topography) and from studying the results have concluded that most decisions are intially made emotionallyand only after to we come up with logical reason to support choices we have made emotionally.

That kind of pushes the argument into a corner in that, why, if we review decisions rationally, we rarely change our minds

I think there is a lot more context to this than what you’ve wrote. I don’t believe most people believe rape to be worse than murder. I just think they get frustrated at the fact that it’s hardly seen as a serious criminal offence (which is understandable unless you wouldn’t care about your daughter being raped either). Also, you need both emotions as well as rationality to make the best decisions, there should be a balance because without that, when you have an extreme of either one, you got problems on both sides. If you have no emotion, how can you truly care about outcomes or consequences? Imagine a surgeon who lacked compassion (an emotion) he may be good at his job but if he doesn’t care whether the patient lives or does beyond that he’s unlikely to be as good because the emotional motivation to do their best for that patient isn’t there.

I think you're right that a lot of people use emotion more than logic. But the primary reason behind the example you gave of saying rape is worse than murder is different. Murder is obviously worse than rape, but many women say rape is worse because it supports their "women are victims" narrative. More women are rapes than men, but more men are murdered than raped, so the message these "victim" women (aka feminists) always want to push the message that rape is worse to support their message that women are bigger victims than men.

To feminists, victimhood is a competition.

Murder isn't worst than rape. You're dead. The only ones who care afterward are relatives, friends & the worms.

Rape, like being blinded, is a lifelong tramua that can negatively & severely afflict the victim for years to decades afterward. There's something very mentally wrong about people who don't make that realization.

And I'm not being emotional I'm using rational. When you're dead you don't breathe, you don't feel & you don't think or remember a thing. Very different from someone who is raped and has to live with the feeling of been used, of been dirty and filthy, etc. Very different from someone who is raped or assaulted that experiences PTSD as like anyone, such as soliders, who have lived through traumatic events.

Yea i really don't like this about the world today. I learned having thick skin is really beneficial early on and having a clear calm head is critical. So no matter what i hear or read what someone said or writes it never gets to me because I know its just an opinion and it does not make it a reality and i also highly value logical discussion then emotional tantrums.

Because people don´t empathise with dead. They are dead and unless the story is told very explicitly, people just don´t feel with them as much as with people who are alive and telling the story of the rape or torture or other terrible crimes. Also something gets more attention in media which raises emotions even more.
