Shotguns can be purchased in almost every country in the world, even strict countries like Japan and the UK allow citizens to purchase and own shotguns. The only countries that don’t allow citizens to own shotguns are authoritarian and totalitarian countries.
In the US, shotguns can be easily purchased as some states don’t even require a permit to legally purchase a shotgun. A person just needs to be at least 18 years old, have a clean record and provide valid documentation (identity etc) at the gun store. I think even California with all it’s weird laws allows residents to purchase shotguns without a permit.
Furthermore all those gun control weirdos don’t seem to have much issue with shotguns as they are too busy talking smack about clip sizes, Assault rifles or at least any “scary” gun that looks like an assault rifle.
The only time Gun control pinko advocates may talk smack about shotguns is when someone uses a shotgun in self defense because those pinkos don’t support the law abiding citizen’s right to act in self defense for some ridiculous reason.Mossberg 500

Are shotguns the least controversial gun type available in the civilian market?
It's worth mentioning that in the US, shotguns are the second most common type of firearm used in gun-related crimes and deaths, grossly eclipsed by handguns roughly eightfold. The rhetoric thrown around by the anti-gun lobby is almost entirely BS, whether they are aware of that fact or not.
It's also worth mentioning that in the haydays of the Italian Mafia, anything requiring more firepower than a.38 revolver was almost always a shotgun of some sort. The reason was because these were the two easiest things for someone to get ahold of, and dispose of without drawing attention. Fully automatic "tommy guns" used in mobster activities were an extreme fringe rarity, even though it formed the basis of virtually all weapon bans of the last 100 years, and both the double-barrel and pump action shotguns of the era were far more popular.
In my personal opinion, shotguns have their uses but like all tools, they can easily miss out on their effectiveness when somebody who doesn't know what they're doing tries to use them in a manner they haven't trained for. They are effective hunting weapons for certain types of game, and very specific tactical or home defense scenarios, but they are both overrated and underrated (misunderstood) frequently, and the ideal hunting, sporting, and home defense shotgun would ultimately end up being three distinctively different weapons. As far as controversy is concerned... The ideal setup for a home defense shotgun is very much an NFA regulated item that gets very little attention from either pro or anti gun lobbies, so take that as you will.
You may be right. I don't hear as much about shot guns.
You do hear a lot about magazine sizes. The bottom line... I disregard most of the bitching and complaining about guns because their complaints are disingenuous and erroneous and I see most don't know or care what they are talking about.
To cut to the chase. Their entire focus and rational is based over these sensational cases that happen once or twice a year. Some evil gunmen will just start shooting in a pack of strangers and just try to kill as many moving targets as they can. Often times they'll get 12-20 people.
Every law, every restriction, every evil they argue about is about those lone cases. But when you look at the gun violence data... it is in the thousands... the thousands and almost all of them occur with gang members and criminals that have illegally obtained guns that shoot each other up in drive byes and robberies and crimes and turf wars, home invasions... they happen almost daily in big cities... they'll shoot 2 or 3 at at time. They never address how to deal with the vast bulk of gun crime which covers 1,000s of shootings. They are only concerned with the average guy going and applying for a gun license and buying a legal gun and if their magazine holds 11 instead of 7. They don't even mention criminals and illegal guns.
You know, I had always assumed handguns were the least controversial... but you might be on to something here. lol.
And it makes sense why people who usually have a problem with firearms might be more okay with shotguns. It's a lot slower to fire multiple shots, especially with shotguns that are cycled by pumping, which seems to be far and away the most popular kind of shotgun. And a slower firing rate obviously means it's a lot harder to massacre people.
Plus, they're a lot better for hunting, obviously, than for defensive/murdering purposes.
Lets say we got rid of all guns there would still be other things that can be used as a weapon. Bow & arrow, crossbow & bolts. Sporting good stores and hardware stores has things that could he used as a weapon. Sporting good stores have: golf balls, baseballs, softballs, hockey pucks, bolling balls, golf clubs, baseball bats, hockey sticks etc. Hardware stores have: hammers, wrenches, crowbars, screwdrivers, axes, shovels, pipes etc. Knives, pots & pans, dishes, chemicals, marbles etc. So people will still find something to use as a weapon. Might not kill or harm as many people but still can be dangerous.
I understand it is difficult for a city slicker to understand, but weapons are incredibly necessary in the country. ESPECIALLY if you have live stock. In the UK 90% of all the dangerous predators have been wiped of the island. Here it's not the case. Coyotes, wolves, bears, bobcats, mountain lions, etc... are everywhere. They love some good live stock. Especially Coyotes. Also Americans are not like Aussies who live in one single spot on the contient we inhabit every forrest, swamp, and mountain. And deal with every damn animal they can throw at us. Hell, Gators and crocs will straight up walk into your house with no fucks given and the strongest bite force in the world in fucking metropolitan Miami. That alone warrants weapons.
In the UK it's perfectly legal to carry a unloaded shot gun in public places, I've even seen people get on buses with them. All other guns, even unloaded must be in a secure case during transport. Another gun type with even more relaxed legislation are captive bolt guns, you don't even need a license. Most people are unaware they're even available.
Captive bolt guns are not guns. Those are used to stun animals prior to slaughter. It doesn’t even fire a projectile.
Do you find it ludicrous that you can carry loaded shot guns in public but other guns must be locked up? Up close there is no weapon or gun more damaging than a shot gun. Less than 1% of people who have been shot by a slug from a 12 gauge shot gun have survived. The only reason it’s not the preferred weapon of mass murders is that it’s not as concealable or easily handlers as a pistol and the recoil is punishing compared to many other rifles. Otherwise one could do no better in terms of weapons to shoot up a school.
It's true that bolt guns don't fire a projectile but rather a short fixed bolt into the brain by means of an explosive charge. But most people who use them would class them as a fire arm. I'm surprised they don't get used for criminal activity more often.
You can't carry a loaded shot gun, it has to be empty. Because of public concern most will dismantle the gun or have it in a discrete case in public. I would agree the rules should be tighten in lines with other guns.
My point more was the rules should be relaxed on other fire arms in your country. A shot gun is no less dangerous than any other kind of fire arm if used for wrongful purposes.

If I ever saw a non plastic gun out in the open I'd contact security maybe even the police and leave the area quietly and unhurried. I've never in my life seen a real gun I know some cadets still have guns to prep for war training and there is gun ranges around. I think you hit the nail on the head. Shot guns are definitely no less lethal than rifles like M4s. Less than 1% of humans have survived a blast from a 12 gauge slug.
I think other governments only allow them due to limited range. I don’t think it’s the ammo capacity. They do make drums for shot guns in between 20 and 30 rounds. Eliminating round capacity as an issue. The problem is the range. A slug is only good for about 150 yards. Something like 7 and a half pheasant load is only good for around 100 yards. At close range there is nothing more devastating than a shot gun.

A 12 ga shotgun is one of the most deadly close quarters firearm. 12 ga is.75 inches, 20 mm, a lot of lead comes out. I have two positioned in my home, no one is getting out alive if the break in. Also both have 25 round drum magazines.

The number of firearm-related homicides vary between 16,000 and 20,000 from year to year, out of 330 million citizens and more like 450 million people in estimates it at closer to 1.5 million. There are other estimates as high as 3.5 million. So how many of those DGU cases prevented rape, robbery, brutality, trauma or murder?
Do you realize how much knife killings are happening in the UK? If they don't have a gun and want to kill you they still can as it is hard to defend yourself from someone that has a sharp knife and who knows how to use it.
