The Congressional Budget Office has calculated that BARDA alone has spent over $19 billion on vaccines, (there are other agencies like the Defense Department that have provided funding too, see below), at least half of that spend was buying vaccines for the American public from Pfizer, Moderna and J&J (from biggest to smallest). Overall, Moderna has received some $9 billion from the government while Pfizer has received over $10 billion from the government, but with important differences.

It's extremely complex. It's a guess as to what will happen next, or in the future spending and stock prices of these big 7 big pharma.

I think these are some key takeaways from it:

I did not see any mention of the cost to produce. Where did you get that figure?

Basic internet search... it varies between manufacturer. This article says, average across all manufacturers is $3.30 per does.

But this is the part that gets my attention...

- Pfizer target profit is $234 million annual
- Moderna target profit is $41 million annual

They both estimate target profits of over $2 Billion when all over.

It’s not a maybe, it’s absolutely clear. The vaccine reduce the spread itself and most certainly reduce hospitalizations massively, both of which open up the possibility for more quick economic recovery while also simply saving lives (which is an economic benefit) and saving costs on healthcare.

So the year prior to lock down and vaccines 377k died. Since March 2021 the year of vaccine and lock downs over 500k have died.

But in the end 99.974% have survived, vaxed or not vaxed and pharmaceuticals have profited in 10s of 100s of millions of dollars. Life goes on...

You eyeballing at some basic data is not even remotely comparable to literal peer-reviewed papers that show it helps substantially against hospitalizations and deaths.

For example, different years may have different incidence rates, different variants, different treatment and different behaviour by people. Just eyeballing some data is not evidence of evidence.

And sure, you can “state facts about known numbers”. Doesn’t mean you can interpret them, which means stating them is pointless.

And sure, they have made billions of dollars, which is a bargain compared to the economic benefits of reducing the threat of the pandemic

Basic example: after wave 1, a lot of countries had very little cases from May until October/November. They also typically took much stronger action in year 1 than in year 2.

Comparing them with “oh but 2021 has more deaths” (without any information about anything else) is just dumb

Okay, to simplify it even further. Proper empirical analysis is what answers the question whether vaccines work. Eyeballing data does not. Peer-reciewed papers do the former and therefore are infinitely more reliable than your eye-balling.

Believe what you wish... facts are facts. 99.974% of the population in the United States have survived vaxed or not. So I still think there is a bit of knee jerk reaction and over sensationalizing of the thing, while other makes millions on it or profit by other means from it.

Is the vax safe and is it better than doing nothing... sure I agree. But it is not really necessary either because 99% of people will survive this without vaxing. Time will tell the story.
