It's often implied that it's racially motivated and inflicted by white men, but majority of the cases that I've seen solved are native on native violence centered around substance abuse. It's certainly sad, but it should also be a cause for introspection.
There's also a human trafficking element and organized crime involved too. Messed up and sad, tough to solve in any simple way.
Problem is they aren't investigating, but when it comes to sexual assault the majority is not Native on Native.

When it comes to the missing and/or murdered, since they aren't investigating or doing a shitty job at it. Hard to know who is doing it, but it is worst for the Tribes that have major highways going through them. Those that are more isolated have less of a problem. That almost leads people to think those major highways are people driving through and taking them.
Until they start investigating and bringing people to justice we won't know for sure.
I cannot believe in my city in my state how many cold cases there are how many families have not had closure because of their child missing to me it is wrong for the amount of time that it it has taken to even reopen a lot of these disappearance cases
Not only that but many Indian children were taken away from their parents to be raised in institutions to teach them the ways of the white people. There many were abused and many were killed and their bodies were buried in unmarked graves. And Blacks think THEY were discriminated against? Compared to the Indians, they were on a picnic.
Yes, but like all the other awareness days it will probably accomplish nothing but used as a way to feel good and sell cheap crap. Which is a shame; but is par for the course in this day and age of virtue signaling is better than actually doing something.
I've been well aware of it for quite a while, but it doesn't get much publicity at all. The plight of Indigenous People in general doesn't reach the average person's consciousness. It's worse than what happened to African Americans but continues to fly under the radar.
It is relatively new as a National day but at state and local levels it’s been an issue for quite some time in my state and a couple neighboring states.
Same here, I grew up with in a few miles of the border of my reservation lands, just barely outside of it. I've known about it my whole life. Yet even on the state level, it wasn't really heard of too much, more local level. Would tick me off when someone a 100+ miles away would go missing and get a Amber Alert but none of the people there would ever get them when going missing.
Never heard of it and don't care about it. In many ways it's just a problem solving itself. If Indians want to kill their own I don't think the white man should stop them. We'll only get blamed ... we developed the country and what thanks did we get from that huh @exitseven

This is a serious issue, as well as African American women going missing and getting murdered.
Its really to do with poverty and lack of media coverage. We have wall-to-wall coverage for Gabby Petito but none for people of color who go missing with the exact same circumstances.
Thank you for raising our awareness. I have heard about this issue previously, but I was not aware of the official day. I hope more people pay attention. I hope that the lost girls are found and returned home.
I have heard of it in Canada, not in the US. I will cry for missing indigenous women when the native tribes are no longer putting disenfranchised non-natives on trial on the charge of domestic violence. They do most of the work on reservations and they are second class citizens, unable to vote or hold office.
Historically, not really known cause they are often being ignored and not investigated. They either end up missing and never found or murdered and no investigation takes place.
All the above, some tribal police, some county sheriffs, also big problems with who has jurisdiction.
The SCOTUS has ruled Tribal police can't arrest non-tribal members on tribal lands but tribal police have no authority to arrest off tribal lands.
Sheriffs, state police and others will take forever to decide who has the authority to investigate. They will be like, we won't arrest someone, no crime has happened here.
They don't work well with tribal police and reverse.
It works both ways though, a tribal member can commit a crime and go the reservation and can't be arrested, or someone can commit a crime on the reservation and flee and can't get arrested. Assuming they even investigated to know who they are. The FBI can be called in to handle it and has authority in all locations, but has to be requested and can take awhile.
Many times these area's are so rural, with main highways that it is suspected people travelling through, kidnap them. It is also known that MS-13 is taking young girls for sex slavery, due to how easy it is to get them. Hence why 40% of sex slaves in the USA are Native American.
Many tribes do not even have access to the amber alert system.
