Rachel Maddow seems to think that Donald could face less charges for his "crimes" (read; smear camaign by teh left) if he stops gunning for being president in 2024.

The Federal indictment of Trump is because he left the Department of Justice no choice.
He'd been violating the law for over 1.5 years by not complying with lawful requests to return documents per the Presidential Records Act. There comes a point when the niceties end and action is taken.

Part of the problem with Donald Trump is that he has grown up and lived his entire life doing what he wanted - skirting rules or the law, cutting corners, short-changing people or otherwise fucking them over - for decades without serious consequences that it became his modus operandi. He could defeat most anyone who gave him shit because he would lawsuit them to death because he could afford the lawyers and the time so his enemies would give up because they couldn't do the same thing.

But, this mentality of Trump's that was successful all his life, doesn't work with the Federal Government. And that's what he's learning and why he had to be indicted. He brought this on himself.

Really, in a way, all of us, including Trump, would have been spared a lot of aggravation in life if, 50 years ago, the United States Department of Justice did not settle out of court with Trump and his father when the DOJ brought a lawsuit against them in 1973 for violating the Fair Housing Act of 1968. Had the DOJ not settled and took this to conclusion with a victory, then Trump would have learned that, yes, he could lose battles.

Instead, the settling out of court taught him that you can "still get away with it" and just face a minor penalty. It didn't teach him not to do it, and that's an important difference when raising a human.

Thus, Trump is now getting into all kinds of shit because what he has always done successfully - get away with doing what he wants regardless of the rules - is no longer working because he's going up against forces larger than him.

He really needed to learn when he was young. And he didn't.

No because they would love for Trump to be the nominee. He'd have no chance of winning. Any of the other Republicans running who aren't total losers? They could actually win.

I think it's a lot simpler and not about politics. Trump is a criminal and (gasp!) laws are actually just being enforced. The fact that he happens to be a politician is a coincidence.
