I am not a God. I have not given life to any people, I don’t have a right to take it away. Unless they try to kill me first and I am protecting myself.

Problem is that way of thinking has led to a surge of crime and violence in American cities.

No they should be shot while stealing, he's wrong about that and needs called out. At a minimum, they should be caught and beaten. We should provide food pantries and places where people can get necessities for low to no cost, provided by volunteers... so there is no complaining. Shoot them running out the door... he doesn't have experience with this... could hit a bystander, that be bad.

I think he's just posturing as he is a bullsh$3ter, he uses words to control people... produce fear. It's how he controls and it's a reasonable tactic, but a lot of people take it as what he says is fact. I don't. If he did, I'm not opposed to it, it just creates other problems I wouldn't accept so you gotta shoot right. This is the reason police shoot all their bullets, a dude long ago got hit with one bullet and sued the police... they lost several million in that suit. After that, is when I noticed police shoot to kill.

Now... if someone was stealing out of your garage, I think you have a right to shoot them. You never know if they are going to pull a "Willie Horton" on you and your family. Why take the chance? I will defend your right and favor your view to protect yourself and I expect you to do the same rather than protecting the interests of the criminal.

These guys were shootable... in other words, when in a confrontation, no way to know what their end goal is. I favor the innocent.

    https://www.tmz.com/2023/09/19/carjacking-connecticut-aston-martin-driver-beatdown-garage-thieves/

I also favor your right to be nice to them and let them take what they want. That's noble and I may do the same. That is up to you as individual. In other words, Trump can use his Ruger to shoot people in his garage, but you will welcome them with beer and pizza and whatever they want to take. That's up to you... you are the owner.

Shoplifters should be stopped and if they become a threat where they will cause bodily harm or death to another person (and if there is no other options) then they should be shot.

People forget to look at things longterm, but are we really going to ignore the rising crime in places where they are soft on crime like LA or NY? Our focus should be on protecting the innocent and vulnerable... not criminals, but being soft on crime gives a green light to the criminal element in our society. It creates a city where "the strong devours the weak" vs "the strong protecting the vulnerable." Shoplifting and vandalizing is the first step to even worse crimes. Not to mention shoplifting and vandalizing can become a deadly situation for an innocent civilian on its own. I'd rather have a single shoplifter who initiated the deadly situation get shot (again if there is no other options) and stop ten people from pursuing a criminal lifestyle then allow lawlessness to continue and having ten innocent people get hurt or killed. It's the classic train conundrum: run over one person or run over a large group of people. I choose to protect the innocent and keep our neighborhoods safe.

We desperately need to focus on stopping crime, but we also need to focus on preventing crime just as much. Like mental illness, fatherlessness, high school dropout rates, etc. We need to work on both ends to create and maintain a safe and civilized society.

That is a very long awkward rationale for the death penalty for shoplifting. Completely over the top and completely unnecessary.

I didn’t mean for it to sound pretentious or theatrical, but seriously you reap what you sow. All the places that don’t do a thing about small crimes eventually are overrun by the criminal element.

And I’ll repeat it again because twice clearly wasn’t enough…shoot only if there is no other option. Most shoplifters can be restrained easily. However utopia doesn’t exist. As long as there is still greed people will eventually get hurt or killed. The real question is who. I think it should be those who initiated the situation not the community.

Anyone and everyone, but it will most likely be those who have something to lose, law enforcement or security, bystanders who are tired of criminals walking all over them and their neighbors, or plain good ol' samaritans. Most people won’t do anything until it’s their own welfare that’s being trampled on…which if crime continues to go up more and more people will see the importance of maintaining a safe and civil society (rather than focusing on political correctness and virtue signaling.)

Only if armed, if not they should ideally be tased. While shooting shoplifters would make shoplifting a thing of the past very quickly, it isn't justifiable in most cases.

Really we just need to make sure there are mandatory minimums on shoplifting. Get caught? Mandatory year in jail. Get caught again? 3 years. Again? 7 years.
Eventually you'll run out of shoplifters on the streets.

If you think they should be tazed, then you've never been trained on tazers. Most shoplifters run in and run out, and a tazer is a single-shot "less-lethal" weapon that more-or-less requires the target to be standing still. Tazers fire 2 darts on wires, and BOTH darts must penetrate the skin in order for the tazer to work. There is a very short effective range, and it's even shorter (significantly so) if the target is moving.

Police are (correctly!) trained only to use a tazer when there are already OTHER police with real guns drawn on the suspect, and the suspect refuses to cooperate. Stores don't have groups of armed security guards - there's usually one or two at the most - so using a tazer in that situation is outside its intended and designed use, and would likely not be effective.

Anyway, the other problem is that DAs aren't prosecuting most shoplifters - they simply decline to press charges and release them. This is true even if they've already been arrested for shoplifting multiple times that same week - as is often the case. And this makes the police reluctant to try very hard or take much in the way of risk to catch them in the first place, because what's the point if DAs don't prosecute? So you have store-owners suffering massive losses and damage, with zero recourse. Then they leave or go bankrupt (if they had insurance, and the insurance covered them once, that insurance is usually canceled and becomes non-renewable), and then the city loses tax revenue, the landlord loses rent revenue, and the citizens lose a local shop. All this because we're unwilling to prosecute shoplifters.

This evokes nuances of the assertions that "Trump directed individuals to besiege the Capitol on January 6th." I am extremely inclined to believe that this may be misconstrued or presented devoid of its full context to suit a particular narrative.

I say retail stores that have product for consumer purchase should be seen the same as property and should be protected as such. So if that includes a beatdown or being shot, why not?

Same goes for people who get carjakced or have their home targeted for burglary. Rights get forfeited in my eyes when people choose to engage in criminal activity that causes harm or damage to one's livelihood and property.

If a shoplifter is being arrested and attempts to flee, that might justify being shot. But just exiting the store with shoplifted goods... don't shoot them, just detain them and prosecute them.

Most stores are telling their employees not to do anything if they see a shoplifter, on the fear that the shoplifter could harm them.

Yes. Maybe if it were done more often then the shoplifting would end. Like I'm just so sick and tired of seeing on the news that some group of shit heads goes ransacking a Home Depot or fashion store. In some African countries they still cut people's hands off for stealing. Seems absolutely terrible, but the stealing affects businesses and communities too🤷🏿‍♂️

When they are looting your personal property whether in your house or business shoot who loot. Rioting is not an excuse to go on someone's property and remove property without paying for it, Just because you think you are owed for some perceive injustice.

There's no such thing as a legal warning shot, ever. Your "warning shot" is a deadly bullet that could easily hit an unintended person and maim or kill them, and the shooter is responsible for each and every bullet that leaves his or her gun.

If you have to pull that trigger, you'd best make sure the bullet goes into your intended target, or it will be YOU who rots in prison.

It should at least be on the table.

Even if they didn't get shot, they still value the stolen goods over their own lives because they risk prison and their criminal record getting worse than it was prior.

There would need to be a law that is passed to allow the shop owner to defend their goods with deadly force and a sign must be present so there’s no confusion. Great deterrent!

If you run a stop sign you can kill someone so it seems far more justified to kill people for running stop signs than it does for stealing a few cheap goods.

Apples and oranges argument. Cheap goods over time add up and it should be the right for store owner to protect said goods

Not with deadly force. That is completely disproportionate and illegal.

That would probably work best but it’s not like they are killing somebody when robbing the store so maybe taser them
