I belong to an online chess site ( and I just received the following message in my inbox.

"Raquel founded this club on Jan 24, 2023 and has taken it forward masterfully as the great club leader that she is. If you are a woman over 18 years old, courageous, a warrior in life and in chess, come and join us for a new proposal for a club to play chess, have fun, and face your opponents with determination. Come be a Storm Girl. This club is for Women only."

My response:

"Why would an online chess club be for women only? Isn't that discriminatory? What would the reaction be if someone proposed a chess club only for men, or straight people, or whites? Why do we tolerate blatant double-standards?"

I'm sorry, but this is just WRONG. Crap like this needs to be exposed, criticised and condemned, because it's divisive, destructive and just plain evil.

I received a response to my questions, but instead of actually addressing them as a mature adult would, she just decided to accuse me of being a fake account holder. I guess I shouldn't have expected anything better from people like her.

What’s even more insulting about this is this just chess. It literally requires no physical strength.

So having a “woman’s only” chess club is tacitly admitting that men are naturally better chess players hence more intelligent which is extremely sexist.

Ask them what is the point of making a “woman’s only” club for a game like chess? Are they worried about guys “hitting” on female chess players or something? If those scenarios guys would probably lose to the ladies. Geez.

Because in general people who play chess are men. Some women feel uncomfortable being the only girl in the room, so, they'd enjoy a women's only club.
A chess club for only women is inclusionary.
A chess club for only men is exclusionary.

The exact same logic goes for hobbies dominated by women. I'm sure the men who enjoy the art of make-up would love a men's only make-up club because in a place like that, they'd simply feel more comfortable.
I feel like people nowadays would rather jump to the terms 'sexist' and 'double standards' instead of dissecting WHY these standards exist in the first place. There's logic to be found here

I don't see anything wrong with a female only chess club. And I don't see anything wrong with a male only chess club. What I see wrong is when people make a big deal out of this. It is true, like you point out. What about only for whites, or only for straight people etc. I guess I don't have a problem with those either. Because I believe in freedom for people to be how they want to be, as long as they are not hurting the over all population. With that being said, Isn't most chess clubs for everyone?

Maybe some people feel good being exclusive? I have no idea. It's her club though. If she is the leader, you can't exactly do anything about that.

I'm not a gender abolitionist. I think men's groups and woman's groups have their advantages. Pure men's groups can be fun you can hang around people who women might be made uncomfortable by... the weird autistic people and such who don't understand yet how not to weird out women, but who probably still could use social contact so as to grow better social skills to learn how no to weird out women.

Pure women's groups can be more secure. I've found groups of largely women to be more dull than groups of mostly men. I've found groups of mostly men to devolve into toxicity more often. The best groups have consisted of both, but I think there are enough pros and cons to solely women and male groups that it's fine to want them... especially if they're not associated with a school or larger organization.

I say give such groups a break. Everybody's too hard on them.
