NYC "defunded" it's police by cutting $1B from police department funding. As a result, street crime spiked way up (who'dathunkit?) and now they had to deploy the National Guard to try to contain all the crime.

NYC also passed "bail reform" that lets even unprovoked assault suspects (and even people who dismember corpses and hide the body parts) out of jail, because these crimes are no longer "bail eligible" (meaning: suspects cannot be held subject to bail, and must be released back to the streets until trial).

I agree that they should look at where bail reform works (people charged with misdemeanors and people with no recent criminal history) and where it doesn't. I'd love to know relative numbers of those classifications.

By all means, lock up the people who commit violent crimes or miss court hearings; that was apparently a mistake, but so was keeping people charged with misdemeanors and people with no recent criminal history locked up if they couldn't make bail so they lost their jobs. The old system was ruining people's lives for a single bad choice.

Right - but as always, they took it WAY too far. And, no, it is NOT *always* prosecuted - often it isn't. In this case it will be, but that's because leftist women are the victims. They won't be taken off the streets, though, unless they have multiple repeat offenses - they'll be released until trial, which is insane. I think you can agree that this alone accounts for a good percentage of the increase in crime. And I think you will also agree that these aren't "MAGA supporters" out punching women in Manhattan and Brooklyn. I doubt you could find 5 MAGA supporters in all of Manhattan.

Yes, the murder rate went down in NYC, but nearly all other categories of violent crime, PLUS tons of property crime, has skyrocketed. Look, I *agree* that someone who commits a very minor, non-violent crime (trespass, excessive noise, etc.) shouldn't be held, but VIOLENT crimes definitely should require holding, with cash bail an option (the first time, anyway).

No one is arguing that ALL crimes should require holding, or that bail reform wasn't needed - but as always, things were taken WAY too far and the average law-abiding person is the one who suffers. And New Yorkers are suffering big time due to these policies. Had the only applied bail reform to non-violent misdemeanors, none of us would even need to be talking about it.

By the way, it doesn't look like violent crime in NYC increased anything like as much as media coverage of violent crime. Oh, and it coincided perfectly (Jan 2020) with the pandemic, when crime raised all over the country. Hard to make a cause and effect argument.
