Are murderers being glamorised in the media?

These murderers have often done horrible things to innocent people but the media never fails to make documentaries on them, show them in the news detailing their crimes, they give them funny little nick names, they comment on their good looks or intelligence if the media feels that they are “smart/attractive”

They interview them in a similar way to how they interview celebrities…

They even make series/movies about these serial killers and their crimes, I think a couple of years ago they did a series on Jeffrey Dahmer and it even won an award… and I bet it’s not the only show/movie about a serial killer to win an award…

Does it seem like the media is trying to glamorise murderers? What do you say?

I think the audience for it came first and then the media responded. As soon as the first serial killers came around women went crazy for them. They dressed up in the victims clothes and went to the trial as groupies. True crime, horror, they have a big audience and the people trying to make money follow what the audience wants to see. Thankfully there's not that many people who wanna become murderers just for the clout. I guess it's a sign that our world is not as fucked as some people believe it is. In general the media is to blame for a lot of things but on this one I think the glamorisation happened in certain womens minds first before the media caught on to it. So they are glmorising murderers but only because a lot of people want to see that.

Ohhhhh those women 😩 they even write these murderers love letters and sometimes marry them from prison knowing very well that they killed innocent people…

And it’s the same for men too if my memory serves me correctly the woman in the first picture there on my post was deemed to be “too pretty to kill” men wanted to date/marry her they spoke non stop about her online talking about how pretty she is and how they don’t care even if she kills them😩…. So yeah the media is doing some very sus stuff regarding how they go about reporting about these murderers… so I hear you

Really? Wow wasn't she the one who organised the murder of her family even though she was getting everything paid for and was gonna inherit everything anyway? For me it's just even more crazy when women are into killers because they're supposed to care about their own safety and the safety of their future family etc. Or maybe it's just because I don't understand the thinking. With these guys I think they're just dumb and superficial, but with these women it seems like something's fundamentally broken in them.

This one here stabbed her boyfriend with a kitchen knife in a jealous rage then went to sit outside the apartment covered in blood on a call with her friend smoking a cigarette 💔

With women I think the ones who are into these serial killers do it because the men who kill are physically attractive to them and they think they can change these men and that gets them off, they literally think these murderers won’t kill them because they’re “special” it’s pretty twisted but slot of these girls have a I can change men mentality and a I’m an exception to the rule mentality 😕

It's not about glamoroizing them, bur True Crime is very popular, so it's good money. People are fascinated with serial killers. And if they were smart and intelligent they were smart and intelligent. A lot of people are fascinated with their backgrounds, psychology and what made them killers.

@KostasKouvalis I honestly hear you but why do they comment on their looks if the media feels the murderer is attractive why do they talk about that? After that person took innocent peoples lives does it matter how they look or how smart they are or how charming or respectful they are when talking to people? I imagine how the victims families feel hearing them get almost praises for their smarts or good looks 💔.

I get what you’re saying it’s sort of like these kinds of cases or on demand but just because something is on demand doesn’t mean it’s right, alcohol and drugs are on demand too and they kinda do glamourise alcohol in the media but not drugs they actually try to discourage people from using drugs in the media sometimes… it’s sad that they can report drug use respectfully but then turn around and report these murderers as if they are famous or something then they bring up their looks or intelligence or personality and I’m just like what’s that gotta do with anything?… that person just killed someone?

What’s with the series/movies about theses serial killers? Why are those movies winning awards? It’s like the killer is indirectly winning an award cause the actors are truncating their crimes and getting praises for “doing it well” imagine how the families of the victims feel seeing those shows/movies…

I don't necessarily think it's praise. They want people to understand that ANYONE can be a serial killer. They're simply stating facts. A lot of serial killers demonstrate a high level of intelligence, and some also charm and beauty. It's often a key part of how they lured their victims, like with the "Dating Game Killer" for example. People want the whole backstory and want to understand who the killer was as a person.

Well, there's already a law that says the killer can't profit from their murders. There's no law against other people doing so. People want to hear these stories. As long as there is a market, people will profit from it. No one wants to make a documentary for free.
Now, I can't begin to understand people's fascination with serial killers, but if someone sees them as a role model or admires them for their crimes, well... you can't control your audience and what people think. But I think those who want to, should be able to hear their whole story.

@KostasKouvalis they do profit from their murders they gain fame, they gain fan clubs, they get love letters from prison, they get a bed and 3 meals a day and some sunlight and exercise, they get gifts from their fans, they have their photos taken in court… they indirectly win awards when paid actors act out their crimes on shows/movies and then win awards for that, they gain prison popularity/ fear/ respect most cases…

I’m not saying don’t report crime but the way it’s being reported to me is off they are indirectly praises murderers and making them famous I also don’t entirely get why or fan gurl or boy over killers…

It scares me a bit because people listen to their stories and shows and then idolise the killers though so it’s like to what extent is it appropriate for the media to report on them the way they do..

It might be unintentional. But I know there are fangirls/boys of murderers, as creepy & horrible that is. Besides Jeffery Dahmer, I remember there was Ted Bundy and the one woman who was a "real-life yandere." People didn't want the yandere woman to face time due to her just being cute. And there were a lot of teen girls liking Ted Bundy (yuck). Are some of these killers attractive? Yes. But the thing is that's how some of them get victims in the first place. Usually that isn't the case, but I do think it does happen. Not sure how common that'd be though. Killers having intelligence doesn't surprise me, as they're getting away with murder for a certain amount of time until they're caught.

Yes and no. Anything that's put into media with influence an amount of people. But at the same time there is a amount that it don't. Humans are also designed to be curious and question things so trying to understand such acts is natural.

Tbh I am one who's for sure into dark stuff and ya know have a lot I keep to myself on this topic or only people I fully trust. But like to that other question I can bring myself back to rational thought. Some others can't.

Also I don't know if you watched it or know about dahmer but as someone who knows a lot and did. He is someone if you have any empathy you really can see everything he did was irrational, it wasn't an attempt of glamour and he himself told the cops to kill him. He's a real tradgy and he understood himself was wrong. So in fact he's the best to show because if one actually understands it they would just feel sad for both him and his victims.

And how if he had got help, his life could of been very different. Because in reality he wanted help. Which I think is by far the best thing to take away from it.

Its very different case by case. Someone like gacy he was something else. I would in fact say he could of still been helped if someone broke that barrier of rejection he had to it. But that's the thing he had a very hard rejection to anything. To help or change his mind might of taken forever or never really.

But back to the point anything put out into the world does. Horror films, video games, music. Though it's a known fact this not a cause of any action one takes. If someone is a copycat killer for example that's because something else already screwed them up.

It's not as if someone rational just copies it for the fun of it. They copy it due to past events in their life. So this is for sure not the cataylist and I think the cataylist is what matters.

It's a general problem in our culture. We are very accepting of murder. We just call it something else. E. g. "The War on Terror" or "Israel's Right to Self-Defense" or "The Special Operation".

You know If I hadn't watched the mini doc on YouTube I would have watched the nextflix one to be honest because I wanted to do forensic sciences but I changed my mind and now I keep updated on crime shows/movies.

The Jennifer one is as long as a movie, but I’m not gonna finish it I watched till 23 minutes and gave up also I just try not to watch too much of this crime stuff it really messes me up 💯

I don’t know how the cops and forensic workers manage if it were me doing that job I’d be in a psych ward I’d be finished I’m not cut out for it really!

They’ve even been instances where the killers will critique each murderer and use those critiques for themselves so that they don’t get caught by the police
