It has never been about defense.
Israel is like a thief who murders his victims and then claims he was defending himself.

For 75 years, Israel's tactic for seizing all of Palestine has been to terrorize, brutalize, kidnap, and murder Palestinians. It has prevented every attempt to create an independent Palestinian state.

Over the years, it has divided Palestine into two, small, separate, open air prisons, denied them food, water, medical care, fuel and electricity, and the ability to travel, while subjecting them to continual violence on an industrial scale.

And when Palestinians complain, Israel says it's because they are "antisemitic".

Morons accept Israel's claim that Palestinians are terrorists. But don't a colonized people have a right to resist. The British called the founders of the USA rebels and terrorists. They did the same to freedom fighters in Ireland, India and South Africa. Invaders and colonizers always refer to indigenous populations as savage terrorists.
But interestingly, the Reagan administration created the Nicaraguan contra terrorists to overthrow that government and referred to them as "freedom fighters." The U. S. did that with the Mujahadin in Afghanistan.

What are people supposed to do when negotiations and peaceful protests are met with violence. Rebels have no choice than to conduct guerilla warfare. Are they expected to come out and fight toe to toe against a super power?
Is Israel fighting "fair" when it uses jets, 2000 lb bombs, missiles, tanks, artillery, and the most advanced weapons in the world, including prohibited weapons like white phosphorus to bomb a crowded prison camp from a safe distance?
Is it "defending" itself when 70% of its victims are women and children?
Is it "defending" itself when it deliberately targets ambulances, aid workers and journalists?

It's interesting, though, how Muslims, Jews and Christians lived in Palestine for hundreds of years in harmony. There were mosques, synagogues, churches and holy sites. Palestine was safe and peaceful. It was a popular destination for pilgrims and tourists from around the world.

It had a beautiful culture, not dictated by sharia law. There were modern cities, seaports, beaches, automobiles, and industry. It had thriving agriculture and was a major exporter of olives, dates and oranges.

Israel destroyed it all, bulldozing ancient groves of trees along with pasture and farmland, blowing up homes and greenhouses.

But Palestinians are the terrorists. (sarc.)

If you are specifically targeting children, no. Obviously that is horrible. In war though you target specific groups of combatants, and in urban settings you often have collateral damage. A judgement needs to be made by military leadership based on the available intelligence. If the target is high priority, and there is minimal civilian risk then generally the target is going to be hit. Sometimes that minimal risk leads to innocent civilians dying in addition to the enemy target. This is why armies often utilize information warfare to persuade civilians to abandon an area. The hope is that they leave and get out of the way, so that the enemy combatants and the invading army can confront one another without civilians trapped in the mix and the enemy resistance is smaller when taking an objective. When people choose to stay and put their families in the line of fire, some of them are obviously going to die in the crossfire.
