Are you for strong punishments for heinous crime?

I am. I look at places like Dubai that are so safe. You need strict, harsher punishments for heinous crimes. I’m a fan of corporal punishment, how can you live when you actively murdered some one? Get rid, you shouldn’t be able to be released in 16 years to commit more crime.

I am also surprised that a lot of people don’t tend to be in favour of this.

No, as far as I am concerned there is nothing to gain from punishing criminals for their crimes. Factually it does not deter other criminals from committing the same crime and it does not stop them from doing it in the future. It is a complete waste of time with the sole possible benefit of making the victims feel good or something equally pointless.

Also, criminals in prison costs a lot of money. By increasing their sentences you are increasing the burden on the tax payers. Grabbing the first number from google gives me $64,865 per prisoner for the year, and again, it does not serve to prevent future crime in any regard.

Punishment based justice simply does not work. A system that does work, and is supported by every expert in criminology that I have heard of is reformation based prison sentences where the point is not to punish them but rather reform them into productive members of society as fast as possible and releasing them back.

That form of justice system has had great success and reduced crime by record amounts wherever it has been attempted.

In the short term, it’s fine but with exception to hate crimes and sex crimes, all crimes come from external sources and the lack of it in the said criminal’s life. As much as justice should be enacted for any victims of these crimes, there should also be rehabilitation and a means of giving people a second chance. This is all of our first time being alive, we’re going to fuck up and make mistakes when we’re desperate. No one wants to be the bad guy, no one wants to hurt people. The extremes are not the norm and we shouldn’t treat it as such.
