Are you proud of your country?

Currently, absolutely not.
Overall…. very, very ugly history sprinkled with some great achievements. But we’ve really only been “the bad guy” in my lifetime…. just took me till adulthood to realize it. The forced nationalism is strong here, and in some places, you need to performatively drape yourself in the flag to be socially accepted, at least in what I see as the crazier and less educated parts of our country.
Conceptually, I think making your country a part of your identity is kind of silly. I mean, obviously a lot of it naturally gets ingrained in you, but I feel we should be more evolved in 2025 than thinking where you’re from is the best and everywhere else sucks. That might be unique to America though, because of the “American Exceptionalism” concept many people buy into around here.
To have American Exceptionalists tell it, America is the greatest place that has ever existed and ever will, some folks even say divinely ordained by god, and that we exist to be the dominant force on the planet, for good and bad causes alike. Basically, America can do no wrong, because life on Earth revolves around America and its desired interests. Donald Trump is a symptom of this mentality. I still say you have to be dumb as shit to believe a word the guy says, but many people do, and they, for some reason, have poor enough character to want what he’s selling. And believe me, he’s selling people a bill of goods, he doesn’t deliver, but that’s another topic for another time.
The point is that we have a lot of mouth-breathing muppets in this country who think it’s the height of virtue to make “America” your personality, and to chant “U-S-A! U-S-A! We’re #1! We’re #1!” I am forever ASTOUNDED that this is something grown adults do, but it is, in pretty significant numbers.
There’s a retired athlete turned sports commentator here who, the other month, when America played Canada in this tournament called the “Four Nations Face-Off” in hockey, Canada booed the U. S. anthem, because Trump had just started with all of his fuckery a couple days before. And Americans had the tone-deafness and audacity to be offended by it, as if it were just out of nowhere and for nothing. It was exciting as hell, can’t lie, but there was a fight off the opening faceoff, a second fight off the next attempted faceoff, and a third one like a minute later. Made for GREAT TV, I can’t lie. And under normal circumstances and I’ve rooted for my countrymen…. but thing is that Canada is RIGHT, and we’re DEAD WRONG. So I was kinda like “good on ya, Canadians🫡”
But of course, American meatheads got all riled up about it, felt disrespected, etc. Mind you, this is the same country that literally had the fans start singing the anthem FOR US at another hockey game when the PA system went out on the singer. I don’t think Americans would do that for Canadians, and I don’t think they’d even know the words. So that kind of tells you who respects who and who doesn’t.
So anyway, the aforementioned retired athlete who’s now a commentator, he’s on that Middle American bullshit, and he was saying if someone ever booed the anthem in front of him, he’d be like “that’s it, knuckle up, we’re coming to blows over this.” And that to me is just such an incredibly stupid attitude. A healthy degree of patriotism is fine. If you find yourself in a war, and you’re on the right side of things, by all means, fight. But just getting offended and defending the country as if it was your mom and someone spit in her face…. I’ll just never understand that, that’s mind-blowingly stupid to me.
Here in the US, we have a pro baseball team you’ve likely heard of, even internationally, the New York Yankees. I say this with admitted bias, as my home team is their archrival, but these guys really and truly have the most obnoxious fans you could imagine. There’s a gif of a bunch of them heckling an opposing player from the stands, and everyone in the picture, I’d fully endorse putting them in a capsule and firing them directly into the sun, lmfao.

So the deal with these guys: they have a very long history of success, mostly before most us were born. They famously have the most World Series championships in baseball history, with 27. But a lot of those came around the 1920s and 1950s. They had a couple in the 70s, a few more in the 90s and 2000s when Derek Jeter was there. But the bottom line is, most people alive today have seen like 10 World Series titles AT BEST, if they’re elderly. Most young and middle aged people have only seen a handful. But they CAN’T WAIT to taunt you with “27 RINGS!!!” Careful with some of those old championship banners, guys, they’re antiques😂
I bring them up because that what American Exceptionalists are like. “We’re the best, we’ve always been the best, and we’ll always be the best, because we’re America/the Yankees.” And they base their own personal pride on it, as if it’s something they personally accomplished😂 They happened to be born in the right area, so they ride the coattails of former greatness, and swing it around like it’s their own and we should all respect them for it.
I notice patriotism/nationalism runs strongest in the areas that, quite frankly, don’t bring as much to the table as the rest of America. Maybe that’s unfair, and a poor choice of words, in that these places provide a lot of our agriculture. And I believe all jobs have value, I’m not trying to downplay anyone’s contributions…. I’m just saying you could be the best farmer or rancher in the world…if I have questions about farming or ranching, you’re the first one I’ll call. But I’m not going to ask you how to build a bridge or develop a vaccine or negotiate international diplomacy. Stay in your lane. I won’t ask those guys how to farm, but respectfully, I’m not going to ask you about non-farming stuff, because that’s not your lane and you have no expertise. Play your position, I’ll play mine, that lady over here will play hers, that guy over there will play his.
My point is that the less educated one is, the more likely I notice it is that they latch onto patriotism. I feel like it’s a personality to some, and in areas like that, it basically amounts to virtue signaling. Like these people often think you should literally move if you have any complaints, and they’ll tell you right to your face to get out, and then go right back to acting like they’re kind, charitable people who “just love their country like any good American”🤦♂️😂
@WhiteSteve I have two Masters degrees and I have been patriotic my whole life.
@exitseven One or more master's degrees from a technical/technological field doesn't automatically means that you're more literate than the average Joe in other fields such as history, politics, sociology, economics and philosophy.
That was searing & brilliant. I wish I wrote that!! TY sir. 🫡 🇨🇦
And for the record I've known the words to "O Canada" since I was in the single digits! 🏒=Life
@Danzigdawson Maybe, but he wrote this
My point is that the less educated one is, the more likely I notice it is that they latch onto patriotism.
It is obviously not true.
I rarely read overly long comments. I have read yours.
Those crosstown rivals are just a BLAST to watch!!! Gonna be a great year!!! LGM!
Proud of my country? I’ve lived too long. Learned too much about my country.
It turns out the United States isn’t a country at all. It has been two separate countries from the beginning. Living a lie in a marriage of inconvenience.
Our ancestors left European churches and kings behind to try a grand experiment in representative democracy. A place where citizens would have liberty and freedom to pursue happiness. At least that was the story.
In truth, the European aristocracy were the first ones here and what we actually got was a new feudal society just like the old feudal society. A landed gentry and peasants. But with the added bonus of slavery. Only white men were allowed to vote.
And the religious refugees running from the Catholic Church and the Church of England walked off the boat and proceeded to contaminate their new home with their religious hypocrisy immediately. Gotta love a good witch trial.
The name of this country is a cynical joke. We have always been and remain The Divided States Of America.
Our only major achievements are an unequalled war machine and toxic capitalism.
Should I be proud of that?
I’m proud of it when it was nicer and hard working. If im proud of it today it’s for different reasons. I’m proud that even in its set of bad choices it’s still viable and moving forward. There’s just no grand speech or reason for action that pushes us forward. We just move forward to simply live and for ourselves. I suppose it’s not bad, but it’s not really much to be proud of. I’d be more proud of it if it was done in a better way. I’m not proud of the selfishness or apathy it sometimes seems to show.
In limited extent, I wouldn't fight and die for this my country. Even if I belong to people who earn over average and I inherited real estate. I think the social contract between people and the government is broken. By the way, we had 8 years long our equivalent to Trump in shape of PiS. It ended up just with scam, nepotism and embezzlement

Yes, I am proud of country, from historically from Darius the Persian in 516 BC, Muslim rulers in Middle Ages to till British in 18th century almost from more than 200 times invaders attack on my country, they try to destroy our culture religions, looted our money, they couldn't desroy it,
1st century CE Pliny called india the sink of worlds Gold, He complained that the Roman importes of spices, fabrics and other luxuries from India would drain Rome all its gold, which it finally did,
Our progress stop only in British colonial period when British came to India, India had 27 percent share of words economy
In British period they looted more than 43 trillion dollars, and give india poverty
When they left India we progress slowly but steadily now we become fifth largest Economy.
Now Indias Gold reserve is 876 metric tonnnes, and Indian women holds 24000 tonnes which is more than worlds top 5 country's combined gold reserve.
I can say more about culture, religions, languages, landforms, wildlife, population etc. thanks for giving me opportunity
I'm probably in the minority here, as I currently see only a few comments, expressing a similar sentiment to mine, but the concept of being proud in one's country, never really resonated with me. It's a matter of cosmic coincidence and sheer luck that you were born in a particular place.. Why should I care that some dude that lived hundreds or thousands of years ago than me, invented something. It was their moment and achievement, not mine. I can only be proud of the things I've accomplished myself or my family. There are certain figures in my country that I find inspiring and admirable, but to say, "we're the best in the world", just doesn't sit right with me. I don't believe any country or civilization is superior to others and they've all contributed in different ways to mankind to reach this level of prosperity that we enjoy today. Nor do I politically agree or automatically share the same values or a connection with other people, because we happened to be born in the same place.
We're all human, we have more things in common than what divides us and face similar challenges (climate change the threat of AI, economic instability etc.). This sudden surge of nationalism in many countries of the world is rather concerning in my opinion and I really hope it doesn't end in the same way like last time
I think my country the united states has been amazing. Because of the people and the laws we lived by before maga and project 2025 happened.
Preferably during the time of sleepy Joe, back then at least people could sleep without worrying about extreme unnecessary tarrifs, or whether or not their Social security and benefits were being taken away. Or at least being able to go 3 days without another plane crash or tarriff threat happening. Or having to wake up in cold sweat checking the news to see what else Doge and Trump's team is doing to take away American's stability
Plus I was proud of migrants and immigrants choosing to come to America to seek refuge to find a better life thats been the American dream. There's no need to deport them especially if they are just normal people capable of being a civil American.
Right now i feel the united states could be doing much better than this
I would not say ''proud'' - it isn't the way I would have wanted it (Germany).
(that's one reason why I had left quite some time ago without returning)
BUT:
I do appreciate and feel thankful for a few traits that ''our'' culture has forwarded to me.
And from the land (scape) itself I also see a range of areas that are dear to me.
As I grew up in the late 60's/early 70's - with the cold war idea manipulating us and the ''guilt'' that we Germans back then were indoctrinated to feel - it had been impossible to develop some kind of ''patriotism''.
''Pride'' - actually (somehow) is one pillar of preparing one's downfall.
Because... it wasn't ''me'' who contributed to whatever is considered to be 'my birthplace's 'Greatness''
Awe you have a good heart. I’m sorry for any stress that went your way because of earlier events, and I’m glad you took matters into your own hands and still have a balance in your life. Loving aspects of your country while rejecting any part you may disagree with and seemed to have been foul. Very nice read. Thank you for your perspective and share. Wishing you well
Thank you :) - even the 'bad' things shape us... and with some wits we can turn it into an advantage. I'm well and happy enough.
I am actually.. It's a newer country and et has accomplished so much.. It was one of the first countries to abolish slavery, and then along with the British went around the world to tell other nations and cultures that slavery is over with... By force.. Nowhere near to the extent of the British but they did though.. Even though America is not as free as the fore father's intended, and it's got a lot of dark stuff behind the scenes as any country does, it became one of the freest and most prosperous nations in such a short time.
Yes I am. Our general John Monash was the first to be knighted on the battlefield for 200 years in 1918. That was a big compliment to him and his troops. I have mentioned this before but it remains a point of pride in my country.
Proud? Saperlipopette...
It's complicated?
This country is so many things:
What is love, what is a country?
According to Napoleon it is "A set of lies agreed upon". 🎯
hahaha then let me agree with old N, but I don't think he made up that quote. Intrinsically, this idea must be floating in the head of anyone with a slight philosophical background
I am proud of Donald Trump's version of America! With the help of President Trump's executive orders, our borders are becoming more secure, our economy is booming, and our traditional values are being promoted. The woke mob and left-wing democrats can't handle the truth that they have destroyed this country, and it's time for them to embrace the great changes ahead! #AmericaFirst
Hey if your all for recession then don’t cry
You're just a russian bot.
I don't give a crap about foreign import stocks. Buy American.
@blackeagle007 If recession is all that happens, we will be almost lucky. I think it might be far worse than that.
What kind of losers sit around thinking about how Trump's policies will lead to recession? Go start a manufacturing facility and compete with foreign companies while you have the chance.
Why are the stocks plunging now under trumps watch? 🤔
@blackeagle007 Trump's tariffs are the obvious cause.
The President has the power to make adjustments to the economy if he sees a national security concern. Now, I don't know about you, but when I have a security concern, I lock everyone out and then handle exceptions on a case by case basis. The problem is, the door has been wide open for decades. Of course people are going to react to this change -- that's what the stock market does. Elon Musk sneezes differently one day, and people sell their stock. This is nothing more than waving a red flag at America and saying, get your act together, stick together Americans because we're not taking this BS anymore. The fact that he's treating the economy as a national emergency should be applauded.
Hell NO!!! Trump is an absolute embarrassment!!! I'm ashamed and horrified that a racist, misogynist, hateful, vengeful, incompetent moron who also happens to be a convicted felon is POTUS!!! He is destroying our 80 year bonds with our Allies... supporting dictators over democracies and is currently destroying the global economy in favor of the wealthiest among us... while workers and consumers take the brunt of the pain!!! The damage may be beyond repair!!! I'm fully disgusted!!! We are no longer the leader of the free world!!!
We've went over a thousand years without invading another country so I guess that's something to be proud of.
OK We've helped other countries invade but we've never actually declared war on another
@purplepoppy cough England cough 😷😨
@NicholasRedone Fair cough.
@bddddd bad (slang for true) 👍🏻
@NicholasRedone I understood your meaning, I think.
We've never invaded England properly since 1485, and even then it was with the French.
Which country are you from?
Wales
Then I retract a lot of my comments because I thought you were English. xx
Ummmmm... Colonialism? I guess we have different definitions of invasion. Ireland, India, North America, Australia, Egypt, Sudan, Middle East, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Rhodesia, New Zealand, British Guiana.
@purplepoppy I mean Wales is always trying to score off of England 😁😆😛😛😛🤭 like a girlfriend constantly joined at the hip who never wants a ring popped 💍💍😜
@purplepoppy do you believe dragons? It's on your flag - dont forget old jack now the union flag
As an American, yeah I’m proud of it.
We’ve been through good times, hard times, prosperity and despair though I’m sure we’ll come out of this too. I’m optimistic about the future, our country is in a tough spot.
Our rich history, culture, diversity, people big and small all make it worth it & give variety to look forward to. You learn something new everyday.
Yes, I am proud of my country. That doesn't mean I support, or approve of, everything it does.
my classmate's half-sister gets $80 an hour on the internet. she has been fired from work for eleven months... the previous month her payment was $18872 only working at home a couple of hours every day, check out ————➤ Www.Earn54. COM
On th whole yes all of them although I am aware they have all some elements that are regrettable
Currently no I would go back to 9\11 as the time I thought it was ideal and we were all Americans. Now it's all this us v them crap.
I'm proud of things I have done. Being proud of things others have done before you is a strange concept to me.
This really makes sense. I would say maybe proud in a more inspiring way. I’m more happy and grateful and was once inspired by the people in my country who did great feats. Accomplished things and helped others. It was a real hero kind of persona. But I suppose less time being proud and more time doing what I believe is right is the better choice. Not learn to be an onlooker but a doer. Everyone should be heroes of the story cause then it means everyone is a real team or kind of family. Looking out for each whenever possible.
Both. Triumphs & tragedies. Fidelity & folly. Liberty & lies.
If your EXCLUSIVELY proud or ashamed of your nations history you haven't studied it.
Greatest country in the world. You should come here some time. We do crazy things like peacefully transfer power after an election. It's wild :)
Yes, and I am proud that America is fighting it's way back.
It seems to be fighting it's way into recession.
Good luck with that.
Rest of the world hates Trump. Even here he’s hated
@blackeagle007 Trump is by far the most popular president in history. More than Reagan and more than JFK
@exitseven 😄 That's not even close to being true.
@Danzigdawson the polls suggest other wise.
Made up ones
@blackeagle007 CNN would not make up a poll like that. It galls them to report on this.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/zjNK5qA2B9g
I don’t watch any of those biased channels
I am now. I wasn't for four years prior to January 20th.
no. i'm german. if you're proud of your country as a german, you're automatically called a nazi by every other german. so better not to be proud.
I'm Canadian. I am indeed proud of my country.
Historically yes. Contemporaneously, no I am very much ashamed. Sweden is a weak laughing-stock of its former strong self.
As we have for at least two centuries globally compared. But by our own Swedish standard it has deteriorated severely.
65% support them fully. Since Jean Baptiste (Karl XIV Johan) they have done much good for Sweden. Our monarchy is one of the oldest in the world and the Bernadottes have done well by it.
@julie4 And you, Julie, are you proud to be French?
I don't see Sweden as weak at all from these USA American eyes.
If Australia ever became a republic system, I'd feel hurt 💔 🤕
Yes I'm very proud of being French and of France
Proud of my country... yes but not proud at all (embarrassed really) of the idiot in the White House.
I'm proud of it's history, not it's current bullshit
nope. Any country that thinks abortion is a "right" should be destroyed.
yes without question or hesitation as all citizens should
Just proud of our music going higher and higher that's all I could be proud of the rest I am disgusted
Yes - the United States of America and Chehzloslovakia.
sorry- Czechoslovakia. where is that Siri when you need some AI?
Why wouldn't i be?
We outlived some of the most powerful empires in history and our culture survived many attempts of eradication.
How is that possible with a president who told 30,573 lies in his first term alone?
Why would the black chap be proud of America?
Not these days we won 2 World Wars and proceeded to give up on our culture heritage and way of life away 🇬🇧
I am proud of my family but ashamed of my country
Fuck yeah. Amd getting prouder by the day. Make America Great Again
If we can actually achieve Making America Morally Good Again, then YES, when and if that happens
@Dongie Actually, MAMGA would only be PART of the entire effort. The Trump team has it mostly right on their overall agenda, but their support for Israel worries me.
@Dongie The best I can say, is if you go back into the archives of Faith & Values/TruNews, you will find all the info you need to thoroughly convince you of the evil of Israel, especially the IDF.
@Dongie The internet program I mentioned DOES go by the Bible, and I trust its hosts more than any other humans on the planet
I downloaded child pornography my phone number is 587 926 1234
Everyone should be proud of their own country
i am my country, just not always it's leaders
