Does the Male pursue and chase the Female in all or most animal species? Does the Male take the initiative?

As we all know, when it comes to romance, dating, relationships, and sexuality, for the most part, the guy is the one who does the courtship, pursues, chases, and "woo's" the girl, the guy is the one who makes the first move, approaches, and asks the girl out.

Anyway, is not only this way in just humans? Is it this way in other animals as well, such as dogs, cats, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, arachnids, etc.? What I am saying is, does the male pursue and chase the female in all species of all animals? Or are there some exceptions in which the female makes the first move on the male and takes the initiative? I am referring to other animals, not including us humans.

I think your question can be best answered by visiting a site like national geographic...which is a very cool site by the way. Yes it is normal for HUMAN males to pursue to mate with a female. Basically in caveman times, a man was strictly a hunter/gatherer who went out and provided food and shelter for a mate in order to breed (and have kinky caveman sex). They were and still are a dominant species.

The main reason for thaT? Man's relentless need and desire to breed human species that survive. I mean in your genetic code, and that is creating a human species that lasts far into the NEXT milleneum. It's all about survival, inspite of "guys ask girls"...all we truly want is for a piece of us to be on this planet when we die.n As for animals, they follow suit. It usually is the male who pursues the female - remember this is something that has been coded into all of these species since the dawn of time as we know it.

There are however some cool species out there that do pursue and woo men.l...or have them as servants (ants) or eat them after sex (spider)...it's pretty cool...nature is a wondrous thing. Different species of sharks also have really cool role reversals. Oh, and plants too...

Well the reason why I am asking this question is because I am a guy who is still single, it is frustrating, like it makes me say to myself "why does the guy always have to ask the girl out?", "why does the guy always or most of the time have to approach the girl first and start a conversation?" Well, animals don't exactly have a courting process, it's pretty much about mating only. It's usually the male who tries to impress the female. And a lot of it is behavioral; the male does whatever they're supposed to do (e.g. crocodiles vibrate water on their backs, a lot of birds use calls) to get the female's attention, and the female either responds to it or she doesn't. If she responds, they mate and call it a day...not exactly courtship.

And if you look at animals like lions, there's only one male in the pride, and he mates with all the females. Same with gorillas. When it comes to wolves, the alpha male and alpha female are the only ones who mate. For most animals, it's purely about passing on genes.

I'm sure there are species where the female initiates the mating process, but I can't think of any at the moment.

For one thing, I don't think it's as one-sided as you're making it out to be. But I think the reason why some girls leave it to guys to make the first move is because we're basically conditioned that way. It's old-fashioned, but a lot of people still believe that men are supposed to take the initiative.

Well I wish it was not so one-sided, I am all for it when girls pursue guys and take the initiative, and ask guys out. Do you think one reason why a lot of girls feel it is the guys job to pursue them and ask them out is because since our culture and society has made that the status quo, why would girls risk being rejected when they can let all the guys come to them? They can get away with doing nothing, so of course they are going to want to get away with it.

Women were essentially property. They didn't always have a say in who they married, it was up to their father. Eventually, women had more say in who they married, but they still took on a submissive role under their husband.

The role of women has come a long way since then, but the stigma of men being the dominant gender and women the submissive is still very present.

I'm not sure. I do my mating call all the time, and it never seems to work. Anyhow, it's different with animals. Most have pheromones, mating calls, and some win by dominance. AKA survival of the fittest.

According to evolutionary biology, the gender that is chased is the one in which the costs of reproduction are higher. Usually the costs are higher for the females, but in some cases, as the seahorse, the costs are higher for the males. In this species it is the females who chase the males and make the court.
