I would say long distance track. I’ve done cross country and track, and I’d argue track is more mentally taxing, because the landscape is the same, and there are people all around you at all times. Cross country isn’t bad, because you can focus on the scenery to distract yourself from the feeling like you want to pass out.
Often times, the longest distance is 2 miles (8 laps). For this distance, it’s long enough where it can be sort of hard to gauge your pace. If you get tired, your form often starts to fall apart, and that can lead to side stitches. This makes it more mentally taxing. It’s the only sport I’ve done where I’ve gotten close to passing out upon finishing it. There is running form and whatnot (e. g. rolling off your feet, keeping breaths lined with steps, etc.), but it’s not too difficult technically… it’s just really hard mentally and physically.
That being said, there are lots of sports I haven’t played. I would guess waterpolo could be challenging, and also competitive swimming.

a few have been tough but in different ways... but overall, Rugby was the toughest because I was not used to being dismantled in one play and then it was like I have to get going? lmfao... takes a bit to get used to it
then there's tennis which I tried for a while and damn, I am not light enough for it nor skilled enough to be efficient at it so I would get tired very quickly
then there's boxing and kick boxing, and other martial arts, which can be though for obvious reasons
and a different kind of tough and which I enjoyed the most, was soccer... because it was the most competitive... there's just always so many others that are better than you in one way or another... so I have always liked the challenge of that
ugh, tough one... i played tennis, table tennis, basketball, rollerskatiing, ice skating, skiing, volleyball, dodge ball, bagminton., biking, swimming, diving, mini golf... i can't possibly say which one is the hardest... i guess only personally for me it would be diving as my lung capacity isn't great and football (even tho never actually played it like full on match) cause my leg work isn't that great... hm bt generally probably skiing, its most risky and adrenalin driven... most of sports u can just go on and do but skiing, you gotta be in very good shape and develop skills bit by bit to be able to skii at all
baseball/softball. I found basketball, football, soccer, etc much much easier. The real players throw very fast. My mind was not use to it so it could not process the game at the speed necessary to be good. If I trained, I am sure I could have gotten good though. Obviously.

Competitive swimming. I took competitive swimming classes in I think middle school. And it was at a school I didn’t even go to. My mom thought I’d like it sense I enjoy swimming and my dads dad did swimming when he was young. I hated it. I wanted to quit but my mom wouldn’t let me until I had a reaction to my at the time adhd medication and ended up with extremely low blood pressure and almost drowned. There wasn’t enough blood making it to my brain so I developed the confusion symptom and began wandering the halls of the school until I found my mom who took me home and propped my feet up on some pillows to get met blood circulating again. She took me off the medication immediately and I quit swimming classes.
Football (American) was definitely the toughest in the sense of demanding physical toughness, just by the very nature of the game.
For difficulty, maybe it’s recency bias because it’s current, but I’ve been learning to play ice hockey the past year, and it’s pretty challenging. It’s kind of two sports in one, as you have to master ice skating itself, and also the finesse skills of stickhandling, passing, shooting, etc. People seem to think I'm developing quickly, and even if that’s true, I’d be the first to tell you it doesn’t just come overnight. It’s a physically tough game too, but I’m not really at the level where I’m taking much abuse, haha, so I can’t personally claim it as such yet.Rugby.
Obviously it's pretty rough, but it's more the fact that it's just non-stop, and played at a consistently high tempo. I used to play full back, where you're constantly having to either sprint forward to provide an extra overlap on the attack, or sprint back to be the last line of defense when your team loses the ball.
Ultimate Frisbee can actually be surprisingly hard work too, for the same reason.
Oh, and I've witnessed some pretty unpleasant injuries in my time as a ski patroller.Australian football , in the 70s / 80 s , extremely violent back then , no padding , one umpire , as a small quick player , you ran out hoping not to be killed , and thats just behind the play , if you were playing well , theyd just put some unskilled big Thug on you , who would punch , bite , spit.. other unmentionables , it was extremely violent , much tamer these days gladly , as inclusion is promoted.
Diving. I mean high dives, not scuba diving. When I was a kid, I took diving lessons. I loved the high dive, didn't care for the platform dive, but even the tricks off the low board were tough. I certainly didn't make it to the Olympics.
Competitive swimming. It was funny because injured football players would come to our practices and be in awe with what we did. We would challenge other sports teams to some sort of competition with a neutral game. Swim team would beat all of the teams. Which surprised all of the other teams. Best shake of my life.
In played few months volleyball in school team, but I was too short with 178cm to go further in this sport. I changed to bow shooting.
Rugby. 80 minutes of continuous play. A contact sport with no pads. Not for those that can't run 4 or 5 miles without a break.
Horse Riding. XD
The animal has its own brain, and can decide to happily fuck off in the opposite direction and leave me behind XDRugby, that sport made me feel alive, tough and so very tired. Fighting sports are even tougher, get punched in the face and try to remain focused.
The most exhausting for me was probably up hill climbing or golf
I don't know every sport is tough for me. A sport that is tougher than it looks is golf. The concept is simple but whacking a ball 150 yards into the distance takes a lot of practice it really does!
Wrestling is the most demanding. After that hockey...
I played football and did some competitive weight lifting then transitioned into training mma. I think they are all tough in their own way. I wouldn't single any one of the them out
I played Water polo for a while. It doesn't look that tough, but there is a lot of contact underwater you can rarely see.
Rugby, got battered so much that I had to stop playing,
I played Rugby in college. I do not think I played a game without getting some kind of injury.
honestly: soccer. basically 45 minutes of continuous sprinting... no wonder they all have bowlegs.
Rugby. I played a lot of football but I think Rugby was tougher because no pads not even a cup.
The one called LOVE 😂
