It definitely doesn't surprise me. People use it as a source of information for all kinds of purposes. It can be a viable source for school papers, if it cites the sources for the information.

I often go on Wikipedia and page jump, sucking up knowledge about various things, but taking it all with a grain of salt.

I had Wikipedia-binge nights. I started from World War 2 articles and now I am on how hotdogs are made.

It's a black hole of information. I can only imagine how easy it is now for students to do re-search. Even if the teacher says she does not accept wikipedia, there's literally supporting sources on each page.

Wiki appears top of a lot of searches so I'm not surprised it does well.

It doesn't surprise me. I like to use it to look up people who are "somewhat" famous or well known, to see what they are up to. Like a rock and roller from a former band, or perhaps a former radio personality, etc.
