What kind of computer do you have? Is it a laptop or desktop? How old is it?

I still have my first computer, an HP Envy 17 laptop my grandmother bought me when I was 12 years old. It never got used as a laptop, it was more a desktop replacement since it's so big, but it works. I replaced the HDD with a SSD and it flies. It's got the original i7 Nehalem processor, and suffers from a known issue: it gets pretty hot and the fan runs like crazy. I keep it updated as a backup.
My main home computer is a desktop I built in 2014. It was fun putting it together and bringing it to life. I have a dual monitor display, which I don't think I can do without now that I'm used to it.
I also have a late 2016 model 13" MacBook Pro. It's what I take with me when I travel.
After I got married, my husband moved into his man cave with his iMac. He's an Apple fan boy. To me an operating system is an operating system, if it works and can do what I need it to do, it's all good with me. But I'll never own anything but a solid state drive for the OS, I'm way too spoiled with speed.
I have a desktop pc which is the old one from my husband. I dont know how old it is, but it was upgraded from Time to time. Its older than I know him just a few new parts. For the occassion I do play pc games.
I also have a tablet for work. I mainly use it as a notepad and to quickly write answers down. An Interviewer tool if you say so. It was my old tablet I got for university and is now arround 7years old.
And my working laptop which I mainly use for writing or research. I bought it after it was used in leasing for a year. I think it is 3 1 years old now. After the one year it received a new ssd and battery pack though. That was before I bought it 3 years ago.
Let's see. . .
Acer desktop with dual 24" monitors for remote work and all around use. 3 years old.
A HP 24" all-in-one desktop for the wife to use. 2 years old.
A 16" Dell laptop for play and screwing around, like on here. 1.5 years old.
A 15" Dell Chromebook for travelling. 2 years old.
15" Dell laptop for all our live music stuff mounted on my drum set. 1 year old.
15.6" Lenovo converted to Ubuntu Linux for serious personal work. About 7 years old.
10" Samsung Tablet for when in the car. About 4 years old.
Plus our smartphones.
Just a few. . . . ;)
The Lap with no top. A Toshiba sattelite c55 a5302
Yk, it's really supposed to be a laptop... But the screen is missing & the wifi receiver was in the screen so I have to use wifi vie ethernet port... The battery doesn't hold a charge anymore so it will shut off if the power cord unplugs. Which has happened many times. Oh yeah & the keybord barely works so I have to use an external wired keyboard.
But it's still pushing on so I refuse to abandon it in its last days of life.

Apple laptop, it’s 11 years old and works fine
Is it the A1278? Those things are built like tanks. I have four.
@LiamJHayden it might be, but I don’t remember the number of the model, but it is a MacBook Pro with the CD burner in it
If it's the 13" it is the A1278. They are awesome. Easy to repair and upgrade. I put SSDs in all of mine, and even though it says they max out at 8 GB RAM I have 16 GB in each and it recognizes and uses it.
@LiamJHayden yeah it is a 13 inch , that I know
Yeah, and I’ve done all the software updates. I guess I bought a laptop during a good year.
@LiamJHayden I had one of those until just recently. Apple rendered it obsolete (their favourite thing to do with their products) and it could not be updated past OS 10.15 Catalina. That’s 3 versions ago, and a few programs I used for work were no longer compatible. I still have it, I just don’t use it anymore. I had the white polycarbonate MacBook before that. By the time I got rid of it, it was disgusting and dirty.
@musicbrain5 Well... there are ways to update them. The hardware works fine with Big Sur and Monterey. Still working out the kinks with Ventura.
Just looked at it and it’s a model A1278 and from 2010 so it’s actually 13 years old
At home I have one Windows workstation for personal use, an HP laptop, and six Macs - four 2012 MacBook Pros, a 2020 MBP, and a 2018 MacBook Air, as well as a Red Hat Linux server. The Macs are mostly used for music. In my office I have 12 Workstations, one server, and five laptops, all Windows.
I have two computers: my desktop is a custom built gaming rig. It's about 10 years old, though I just upgraded it last year.
My laptop is... week old? Haha. I bought it on sale last week. No particular use for it other than casually surfing the net, light work, and listening to music and videos while I exercise.
I have a Mac Mini desktop. It's almost 10-years old now and still works fine. Although, it is getting a bit slower now, and I can no longer get updates for my OS, so soon it'll become a completely obsolete boat anchor, but I'll be replacing it sometime in the next year with a new Mac Mini. But I've been very happy with it, and I'm happy that I've gotten at least 10 years out of it.
Catalina still runs fine and with third party software will for a few more years. That will also run Windows 10 or a version of Linux just fine, so you can sell it or gift it if you upgrade.
@LiamJHayden Just curious: what kind of third party software extends its viability?
At the moment, I have two home built PC's. I also have two laptops. The older PC is always offline and runs Win XP. The newer machine runs Ubuntu 22.04. My Fuji laptop runs Win 10 and the HP runs Ubuntu 22.04.
They are all old, especially the XP machine. That's maybe 10 years old.
Ubuntu works really well.
@LiamJHayden So does all the software. Best thing is it is free.
Yup. I am stuck using Windows for work because the client base, and Mac for music because I have used it since I was a kid.
I last bought a computer (laptop) in 2013. Barely used it since 2017. I prob use it one month a year if even that. Im just not a computer person. When i play sims 3 another month a year, i do it on a much older laptop thats from before 2010. But yea still not a computer person
We have a desktop we only use a a few times a month and my dad has a work computer and a smaller lap top and I also have a lap top and an iPhone and my mom has a cell phone but does not pay for data or calling / texting on it. She uses it purely for photography purposes. My parents borrow my phone when they need it for medical or banking appointments.
I have many computers, two laptops, a desktop, an ultra small desktop, three servers.. All in my home. My main laptop is an Asus tuff gaming laptop, my second laptop which manages a 3d printer, is an hp elite book. My primary desktop is a custom built machine. My wife's laptop is an hp elite book, my servers in my basement are all custom with over 100 tb of storage, and my loving room mini pc is an hp elite desk which runs sonarr, radarr, and media center functions as well as retro games l..
Oh and a raspberry pi, running Repetier server, for a second 3d printer.
I have a Lenovo T510. It's the best laptop I've ever owned. The best feature is unlike a MacBook which has one hinge this has two which means no flopping screen. The computer isn't heavy but it's also not exactly light. Also the battery sticks out from the body of the computer.
I'm honestly a little sad. They no longer make this model. My battery needs replacing soon and they sell a replacement.
I had a MacBook for years. I hated it. It didn't run many business programs. The screen would continually "flop" backwards.
I have two laptops I use one for school and the other one for fun the one I use for school is only a few months old and the other is about 2 or 3 years old
Ha! This is a fun question! I unfortunitly don’t actually have one but I plan to get a tablet this coming fall.
Oh yeah! That makes sense! I could never justify the lurches of a nice laptop when I could do just about as good with a tablet. But then the last time I got one I skimped after making that choice and i barely use the thing.
I have a laptop and have had it since January 2015.
It stills works, but the hinges are messed up quite a lot and sometimes it doesn't close properly.
That aside, it works fine, but is slow sometimes, as I have a lot of cloud storage programs installed on it.
I have a desktop PC that I built. The oldest components are from 2012 but most of it was updated in 2020. I need powerful graphics processing for my lighting design work, and custom desktops definitely can deliver a lot more graphics processing power for your money.
I also have a Dell gaming laptop with a good graphics card and processor for when I'm on site or on the road.
Aside from the Windows-based all-in-one desktop in my home office, I have a Windows-based all-in-one desktop in every office I visit.
(More important than the PCs themselves is that all my offices are networked to my home office.)
However, I always have my MacBook Air handy in case I'm out of any of my offices.
The oldest among my PCs is probably 4 years old by now.
My computer is two years old and is an HP with a Backlight Touch Screen that lights when the keyboard is touched.
