Why do I feel more safe in Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles, than New York, even if statistics prove otherwise?

I don’t feel safe in New York mainly talking about Manhattan at all. It scares me much more than most large American cities, and feels more grimy, and ghetto, than other large metropolitan American areas, and it seems to be getting worse there.

I think Americans would do real well for themselves to stop living in such extreme fear and being actively worried that you might be the victim of a crime. We look paranoid as hell, lmao.

Anyway…. I love NYC, and LA, been to both. Never felt unsafe at ANY time. I walked around Manhattan in the scary hours after getting out of a concert, stayed in the streets til like 3:30. Only remote problem I had was a kid trying to get me to give him money while I was buying a hot dog. I only had a $10 bill and I needed it to tip the hotel housekeeper in the morning, so I didn’t want to give it up. I told him I didn’t have any cash to spare, but offered to buy him something from hot dog vendor on my debit card if he was hungry. He insisted he needed cash to get chicken from some other vendor. I offered to buy that on my card if he wanted, but he was insisting on cash, so my bullshit alarm was going off. Then he points to the $10 poking out of my wallet when I paid, says I DO have cash, and I said I need it and don’t ever count my fucking pockets. I wanted to drop him, but I didn’t want to get arrested in a city where I don’t know anyone, have to go back for a case, etc. So I just kind of turned away from him and was like “I don’t think I can help you out, guy”, and he just wandered off. Not really a big deal, I mean, if THAT’S dangerous, then we’re all a little soft, haha.

I feel very safe in most of Los Angeles. I don’t feel safe in New York at all. Like it looks significantly worse in NY vs LA.

Downtown Chicago feels very segregated. It’s very clean, less diverse, less homelessness, in comparison to New York. Imagine California level homelessness, no segregation, public drug use, and no sense of sanitation like somewhere in Mumbai, that’s what New York is like. Chicago still has problems New York feels worse to me.
