truth is once you look at it state by state most parts of america handled this very well and only a few problem areas bring our numbers up, but america has a federated emergency management system where each state is responsible for their OWN response, the feds just provide resources and tools and advise, the top 5 states for deaths both in raw numbers and per capita? new york, new jersey, massachusetts, illinois, california,.....hmmmm i wonder what those all have in common.

The US has 23.6 times the number of cases that Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Spain have (which put together have a similar population size to the US). I mean maybe you could argue that the death rate in the US is 10 times higher than those countries combined so sampling bias could account for some of it but that would be ignoring the usual lag between the spike in cases and the spike in deaths.

Now the article you linked talking about how the death rate was posted on July 6th when it did hit a trough. But we've since then seen an uptick in deaths.

As for hospitalizations, this is the most up to date data from the CDC:

You can see that there was an uptick in hospitalizations corresponding to an uptick in deaths in the past couple weeks. Now the most recent data point showed a downturn in hospitalizations but I don't know if that's because it's actually going down or an "artifact". If you look at the case and death rates over time you can see while there are definite long term trends, there are also short term oscillations so this point could have been taken at a "trough".

As for deaths per populous, a greater portion of the population of the industrialized countries lives in a country with a lower death rate per person than the US so it's not appropriate to say we have done well compared to the other industrialized countries. And that's notwithstanding that our cases (and recently deaths) are going up while most other industrialized countries have very few new cases.

As usual you're deflecting. If you look at the death rate there are short term oscillations and long term trends (which I discussed in my opinion) and it's going down now because we're in declining phase of the short term oscillations but the troughs and peaks of said oscillations are increasing. And the MSN discussed the source you cited which didn't claim that we test more than all other countries combined, just that we test more than the countries that it listed.

we also need to remember that lockdown causes more instability and instability causes death. so when we compare the death rate from the instability to the virus its worth reopening and just letting the virus burn. in the end everyone will wish they had done what sweden did

The derivative of the death rate was approaching zero BUT not as the death rate itself approached zeros (which you'd expect in an exponential decay function). Rather it approached a minimum and now it's increasing again. As for letting it burn through the population, part of the reason the mortality rate is lower than originally measured is because we've learned how to treat the virus in critical cases and if the hospital system gets overwhelmed that advantage gets negated very quickly. As for instability caused by the lock-down, the virus doesn't just kill people it incapacitates them. As for how long, to get a ballpark idea this late in 67% of the population infected with coronavirus still have it. So if we let it go through the population, a large fraction of the employed will be too sick too work for weeks (and unlike the lock-down, the virus doesn't discriminate between essential and non-essential workers). Yeah, that's not going to completely wreck the economy worse than the lock-down did -_-

As for Sweden, we had 50 times the cases they did with just 32 times the populations so I don't know how you figure that they let it "burn through".

we don't count tests in per milllions because it takes the same amount of effort to produce a test no matter who you are or how many people you have. so we use raw numbers

Of course tests per million is meaningful; a country that's tested half their population is better tested country than one that's tested one in a thousand. (And who's "we", in "we use raw numbers"? Do you have a special denialists club?)

It's not a hoax, if it's true. Things could have been done differently and better, simply by following the advice from the previous two administrations. Almost every other country in the world did better, even the ones who screwed up at the start, like the UK. Many have their economies opening up again, and they have fewer people dying right now, and the numbers dying per day are going down, not up.
