What does it mean when my boyfriend growls?

I find it super attractive and a huge turn on when he growls when we cuddle. He'll snuggle up and growl deeply. It's adorable as well. If he changes positions he'll growl again. He says it's not on purpose. And before I told him I like it he was self-conscious of it, trying to hide it. But what does it mean? Is there a reason he does it? I'm simply curious. Thanks

I do it when I'm contented. Just like a purrs, (I had a girlfriend once who purrs to me, and I LOVED it). Its basically him purring.
