I'm a guy currently in middle school and this has happened to me twice. Once for Seventh grade, once for Eighth, and I'm going into Ninth grade praying this isn't a pattern. The guys simply put suck they're annoying, immature, and treat any serious senario as an opportunity to make offensive jokes. One guy in P. E. while I was standing in line for something decided it would be a good idea to pinch my butt. Their were witnesses but everyone in school sucks so they found this amusing. So, I punch flinched him and he left me alone. In Eighth a guy pinched my butt and the guy next to him laughed. I assumed it was an accident (Even though they both suck) so I ignored it. Second time I wrote a note to the teacher and they went to detention. Considering this happened with two different guys I am not confident with the current education system.

I know it has nothing to do with the conversation whatsoever... but in high school girls in my class liked to slap my but and I was allowed (or obliged?) to slap them back in return :) It was really fun but it was among friends so I don't think it is nowhere near what you experienced. I really like giving and recieving the slaps ... ;)
Maybe it's that some guys don't know how to approach women and for them a negative response is still better than no response at all ... ? I'd go with the tazer and mace thing unless it's a friend or an acquaintance. I mean you don't have to use it every time but if he won't stand back or at least act appologeticly once you send him away you'll at least have something to defend yourself with.
If I had a tazer I would use it. If I had mace I would use it. I carry a box cutter in my pocket when I go out in public sometimes and if I had one on me I'd slice his arm or something.
You have every right to make a scene when someone disrespects and violates you like that. What makes a strange man think that grabbing a woman like that is OK? It doesn't matter what kind of dress you had on or how good you looked, why does he (a perfect stranger) feel that he can touch you? I would get very angry and yes I would make a scene.
The same dumbass girls who consider that a compliment probably wouldn't feel so cute if a guy was to rape them..because men who grab strange women's asses also feel like they can violate them further as in sexual assault.
Tazer him.
Happened once on the day I was playing keeps with one of my guy's tazers (police academy boy) but I was facing a mirror so I saw the guy moving towards me. He was about to slap not pinch though.
Guys think they can do that because most have the belief that the female body is public property. It's their whole if you put it on display what do you think will happen mentality. Which makes no sense since what counts as display differs among guys.
If you don't want to get a tazer try mace or at least make a scene so hopefully he'll learn his actions have consequences.
It's your body you choose who can touch it.
It is a pretty sleazy thing for a guy to do, but I do enjoy it happening from time to time. I donn't know what makes guys think they have the right though. The same kind of guy gives the answer "She was asking for it" in defence I think.
I see that happening as just some harmless fun, but guys can take it too far which happens when the dress is short as well as tight.

Let's face it, we look fantastic in a tight dress. Believe me, once you're over 25 this will probably never happen again, so appreciate the compliment.
I've come to see this as just a part of life, some guys don't know how else to communicate.Yes it happens to us girls all the time. As you said it was at the end of the night so he was probably feeling desperate since he hadn't pulled a girl yet and thought he could get your attention. You did the right thing though ;)
Depending upon where you live that could be sexual battery or some similar offense. The problem is proving it beyond a reasonable doubt, especially in a crowd. .
My experience wasn't awkward, but if you don't know the guy, then he's a total perv... I wouldn't wear that dress there anymore :)
