Please help, need some tips?

I'm pretty chubby and is like to change that. I know the basics of dieting and exercise and that type of stuff but just curious is there's a certain routine or certain exercise or even eating something that you may have done that works well. My main problem area is my stomach so I gotta do a lot to work on that so. I've been seeing this guy for 2 years and everything is great but we aren't in a relationship or anything sorta like a fwb/best friend type deal, I think my weight has a lot to do with why we can't be like an official couple. I want to start on it now but he's going away for about 1-2 months so I wanna work really hard during that time and surprise him when he gets back. I know he cares a lot for me and I love him I just feel the weight is an issue and I want to do something about it, not only for him but for myself as well. I have back and hip issues and if I work out it will help a lot with that. Please any tips you can give would be greatly appreciated.
