What are signs that somebody is emotionally unstable?

You got a lot of answers here that are all the obvious signs. The less than obvious signs are a general lack of resiliency (if you experience trauma or adversity, how quickly do you recover from it?), a general inflexibility or intolerance for small problems (people who get flustered by things throughout the day that really have no impact), or people who are not self-aware of their own emotions. If you aren't aware of the emotions you are expressing to others when it impacts them, it's likely you have a lot less emotional control than you should.

They snap for no reason, they're irrational, overly paranoid, severe mood swings ''I love you so much, you mean the world to me!'' to, '' I can't fucking stand you! I hate you!!!'' In a short amount of time.

They're toxic, on hardcore drugs. Hardcore drugs can coincide with bi-polar symptoms, and make someone emotionally unstable, and unreasonably irrational, and impulsive.
