I have had good success with meal replacement shakes, but the number one deal breaker is cost, as well as sustainability.
You can put together a well-balanced meal for the same price as many popular shakes on the market. Basically you are paying for the name and packaging. I personally don't like throwing money away needlessly.
The key to meal replacement shakes is that you stick with it, and make sure that the rest of your diet is built around it. If you have a meal replacement shake then turn around and have yourself a plate of Chinese food because you're still hungry, that defeats the purpose and you've wasted even MORE money.
Meal replacements are most effective in aiding you towards a daily caloric deficit, for example, instead of eating a 700 calorie meal I'll have a 200 calorie shake. I just saved 500 calories. By that replacement alone, you lose an extra 1 pound per week. Not bad, but like anything else you need to be disciplined.

It might work, but I suspect it would be less healthy and less filling then eating appropriate real food.
The only advantage of shakes is the convenience.
I have a friend who tried it and had great success with it. I can be a bit high on cost but if you think about the amount of money you spend a day on food it really is cheaper. I have tried the shakes and they really aren't that bad plus you can put fruit in them. If you are really serious about losing weight and not sure what to eat or do then this is defiinitely something for you. I have a rep for you if you are interested in doing it! Good luck! Being healthy isn't just a state of mind it's a way of living!
If you're prodominantly healthy I say go for it. Everyone has their preference of working out and losing weight. It's not easy, in the beginning, to find a program that works for you so check around and do what you're able to be consistent with.
I workout almost everyday and drink McD's iced tea all day, not much food, once a day meals so I'm sure people will have lots of cons as far as my diet. My cholesterol is great, sugar great, blood pressure etc. is great I'm healthy!
