Is this guy weird for mentioning tampons in our first conversation?

I finally plucked up the courage to talk to this guy at work who always used to walk by. Anyway after saying hi to him a few times we finally spoke. I asked him his name and our conversation just progressed from there, it seemed normal and pleasant.

But into the conversation we were talking about the work (which deals with health and beauty products) I was just saying how I didn't like to be packing up cosmetics. In reply he said something on the lines of 'well would you rather be packing tampons?!' highlighting the fact that packing cosmetics wasn't all that bad.

Sure I got his point but I thought it was rather strange how he mentioned something too personal to women in one of first conversations! Do you think he's weird for saying that or do you think that perhaps it was his nerves that got the better of him as this is not something you would normally say to someone the first time conversing with them?

I just laughed it off and kinda steered the conversation to another subject after that.

I'm more surprised about how that you're so weirded out by tampons. It's not like, taboo or anything, as far as I know. He was not talking about *your* cycles, that's not something people bring up in a casual conversation too often. (though I DID know someone who did, but that's more like an exception to the rule)

Not overly wierded out about tampons don't get carried away. I was merely saying why would you mention something considered personal to women in a first conversation, it could seem OK after a few conversations later when you get to know the person more. How would react if you spoke to some girl for the first time and she mentioned something specifically personal to guys! Look at it from that point of view.

I would attempt to look at it from "that point of view" but I don't keep track of anything that should weird me out as a guy even though 'pretty much every guy uses it', so it's kinda hard.

Every guy uses it?! I asked my girlfriends and they all did say that was a strange thing to mention for an example ON THE FIRST CONVERSATION!

It may be a company joke that you haven't heard yet. Sometimes workers will have internal jokes about the company that they repeat all the time. This could be one of those that some people are comfortable with saying all the time and assumed you had heard it too.

Er I doubt it! That's not something I've heard anyone in there talk about or mention.

It might be kept to the guys. ;) They don't want to be taken to HR for inappropriate jokes, especially if they are jokes about company products.

I would say he is confident and comfortable with you!

But some guys just have no clue too.

oh I c..you coud be right maybe he did feel comfortable enough to say that. I also did sense alittle shyness from him but not overly nervous or anything.

So you say his reply was like a tampon : at the right place, at the wrong time.

Even though he may have said it within context, it's still not considered something you would normally mention in a first time conversation with someone. Get it!

Anyway, you came to the guy saying "oh I don't like that". Not much of a conversation starter.

Judging by your answers I don't think you have quite grasped what my question was! And I never said to him that I didn't like what he said. AS I MENTIONED BEFORE I just laughed it off and changed the subject. The conversation was still going after that..for goodness sake!

I didn't say the contrary. I just say that it wasn't very interesting a subject, you couldn't really expect the guy to say something incredibly thoughtful.

what would you know about what I conversation entailed you wasn't there! Infact the conversation was pleasant.
