I think it's a PC way of saying unusual. For example Adriana Lima's coloring and features are not typical, dark borwn/black hair, tanned complexion, features that are typical of some Brazilian tribes, yet she has those gray/green eyes. She's exotic/unusual but not in a bad way. After all, she is very beautiful and a top model.
Kate Moss is also exotic. Her features are not your classical English girl features, especially her sloe-shaped dark eyes. But she is beautiful. She has an appeal that cannot be defined as a classical beauty.
At least that is what exotic means to me and how I apply it when I say someone looks exotic.

I think it's a good thing. It means you have a rare look, or you look like your from a different country to the one your in.
Exotic is a good thing means "out of the ordinary". Be glad they didn't say different or weird. Take it as a compliment (:
If you are good looking (and you usually know if you are), then it's a favorable thing to hear. It's a good break from the mainstream idea of beauty. A lot of modeling agencies want a unique look, so I'd take it as a compliment.
If they're asking where you're from, it sounds like you might look like a fresh immigrant that hasn't been "Americanized" through a few generations, if that makes sense.
I will admit I have called some girls exotic looking when they just look weird. Like one girl had a weirdly shaped chin/jawline so I said exotic.
hahaha finally someone else whose been asked that same question! I usually brush it off if it seems to be more on the context of a curious mind but then there are those who are derogatory and then fights happen, but that was when I was younger. It even seems to be a deterrent to some girls where I look too exotic for them. Where are you from if you don't mind me asking? I'm from the Fiji Islands.
