I've never given any thought to it about the appropriate technique to use in various circumstances, but looking back on my experiences, there is a pattern.
My "just being friendly and don't really think of you that way" hug is where my left arm wraps around their rib cage and back and my right arm wraps around their shoulder and back.
My "just being friendly but you are kind of cute" hug is where both of my arms wrap around her waist and meet around her spine but my hips are held back from hers a bit (no crotch-to-crotch contact).
My "I want you but don't want to get too intimate right now" hug is the same as my "just being friendly but you are kind of cute" hug except that I pull her close and I don't pull my hips back (if my parts press against hers, that's not something I would feel bad about).
My "I want you and I'm feeling protective" hug is where one arm wraps around her rib cage to her back and I draw her into my chest and my other arm reaches around to the back of her head and I draw her face to my shoulder and neck.
My "I want you and now you are mine!" hug is where both of my arms wrap around her shoulders so my hands are near her shoulder blades and I draw her into my chest really tightly, like a bear hug.
ya for sure when you hug someone you want to be intimate with you want full body contact chest and legs but with a hug for anyone else you keep your bum out a bit so just shoulders touch. for extra intimacy touching your face and or lips against there cheek/ kneck etc
I like 2 arm hugs. The one with one hand on the back and the other cupping the back of my head and pushing my head closer into chest. It makes it even better with a kiss on the head. Makes me feel so loved.

Hm, it's hard to know when I'm not actually doing it, but I think I like hugging with my arms underneath the other person's, as though I could pick them up if I wanted to.

I don't like being grabbed from behind at all it kind of puts me into defense mode. Any up front is fine hell I give all my friends who are girls full bodied hugs like we ain't seen each other in years guy friends I'll give good old friends a firm handshake or a friendly hug.
