i had this problem for many years. they are just trying to make a name off of you more often than not. so they can brag about all the fights. the other reason is mistaken identity.
you want it to stop? take a few of them out. and bang them up pretty good. these will be your examples. once you get you examples, they will stop. whatever you do. do not EVER complain to the authorities, school people, or anybody about this. this will only make your life worse.
a few notes on selection. look for leaders in a particular group to be your examples. make sure that the likelyhood that they are carrying a weapon is low. and fight them when they are isolated. also, make sure that they will whine to their friends about this.
once you have your example, find out everything about him. where they hang out. how many people in the group. how many people around them usually. girlfriends, family, anything they feel strongly about. any prized possestions. and any weaknessess and inuries. all of these things will
take him out. make sure that you rough him up good. if there are any weak spots on his body, take them. if he has bad knee. hit it until he loses his base. a little blood is OK, but nothing serious. you want to pound a message into people. not alert the authorities.
ok. this is the most important part of this. they will retaliate. when you put the example down. lay low for a few days and let the worst of it cool off. then pick the number 2 in the group. isolate him, and rough him up. same rules apply. after this, one of two things will happen. either 1 they will complain to the authorities or 2 they will try to get you.
if the first one happens. deny deny deny. have an explanation for everything.
if the second one happens. there are a few courses of action. the first one is to take them head on. a weapon of some kind is ussually a good difference maker in this situation. another course is to take your beating, but make sure that they do it in full view of a lot of people. you will get banged up, but it may hurt them worse later when others come through for you. the most evil way to take care of the situation is to hurt their girlfriend/friend they weren't expecting. this is war, and they are stupid enough to flaunt a target right in front of you. if you show you are willing to destroy other people just to get to the example, they will have almost no choice but to leave you alone.

ethics alert. this isn't ethical, but this is how I did it. if anyone is going to come on and say that violence isn't the answer has never been in this situation. the only way to fight violence is with violence.
I have this problem too. I have learned to handle it by just ignoring them. I used to get dragged into so many street fights and it never ended good.
The thing about me is I'm kind of dorky and don't look like much. I'm decent sized at 6ft 200 but I guess its my face or something. So, people pick fights with me because they think they can win.
Its been proven in studies that people don't pick fights with people they think could beat them. They pick fights with people they think they can beat.
So, everyone who picks a fight with you thinks you're somewhat of a pussy. You can do 2 things: Prove them wrong or walk away. Trust me when I say this walking away always feels better. Even when you win it hurts and you feel like sh*t.
If so many people have a problem with you, maybe you are the problem.
