He warned me not to get attached. Why does he say things like this?

So I'm sleeping with this guy and I'm under no pretense that it is anything more than that, I don't particularly want it to be. I wouldn't completely rule out the idea, but I'm not really one for dating and as much as I think he's a great guy to chat to and hang out with as well as sleep with I very much doubt this means I'll ever get 'attached' to him. The thing is we were texting last night and he warned me not to get 'attached' and said he didn't want to 'hurt anyone'. I'm concerned as to why he would say things like this when I've made it pretty clear I'm more than happy just sleeping with him, do you think I might give off a vibe that I want something more? To top it off he was being quite protective over me when I mentioned another guy wouldn't leave me alone (long unimportant story), and also later that night when we were hanging out told me that he thought I was interesting and 'wanted to figure out how my head works', what the hell does that kind of thing mean?

Long story short, men confuse me.
