When a drunk guy says I love you, is it the truth?

So I have this on and off again relationship with my ex. He broke up with me, and we keep going back to being FWB. He hasn't been with anyone else since we were together, and he broke up with me because he says he needs to be selfish. He needs to figure out what he wants in life, and he doesn't want to treat me poorly as a girlfriend. He has refused to become exclusive FWB, even though he says he's not looking and doesn't want anyone else. He did say I love you while going out, and he has said it since then-although he says he means he loves me as a friend.

So last night we were hanging out (me, him, and another friend). We had a nice time, went out to dinner, drank A LOT of wine, and I went home with him. We were cuddling in his bed and making out and it slipped from me that I love him. He then said he loved me too. Then several times while we were cuddling/kissing he told me he loves me so much, and that he wants to be with me. I asked him if he meant it or if this is him being drunk. He said he meant it. So then I asked if he wanted to get back together, and he said no. This morning I asked him now that he's sober does he still love me. He said yeah, but it almost sounded sarcastic.

How much truth can be found in what he said? I understand if he doesn't want a girlfriend, but does he still really love me? Is there hope of getting back together? Thanks for the responses
