Why did he ask me if I am okay after break up?

I and my boyfriend are in a long distance relationship, we used to know each other before but we can’t go to each other’s countries because of financial and etc. problems.

We’ve suffered a lot without seeing each other for a long time and today he told me after unsuccessful Facetime call, because we couldn’t even have good enough connection to talk, that he feels empty, unsatisfied and unhappy in thus relationship, because it’s just our fantasy unless we can meet each other and we don’t know when we can so we should break up and ho on with our lives.

We’ve been together for 3 years. But we haven’t seen each other for a long time.
We broke up, I thanked him for being the best boyfriend to me, for making me happy and making me feel loved and told him, he will always be my first love and my family and that I wish everything best to me. And that he doesn’t need to blame himself for break up.

When we broke up, he messaged me

“ - Are you okay?

I told him I am not okay, but It’s fine I’ll be alive and asked him how is he.

He said he feels bad. I told him not to feel guilty and he said he doesn’t feel guilty, he just feels bad.

Later on he messaged me again

“Do you want to break up?”,

I said I don’t want to, but I understand why he wants and I respect his decision.

He messaged me

“I am sorry, I am stupid, I am sorry for making you feel angry and sad”.

I sent him hearts, he still keeps our picture on his profile.

So did we break up or not? I can’t really imagine my life without him.

We’ve broke up and got back together around 10 times in the last 10 months. He called me every time we broke up, or the next day and we kept on going again and again.

Because it was hard for us to keep it going long distance without knowing if we are going to meet any time soon. But we had such wonder memories and a big love between us in our past when we lived together that we always got back together after breaking up.

I hate it too and so does he. When we met I lived in his country, we lived together for a year, but due to pandemic we got apart, I had to go back to my country fir just 2 weeks, and both of us failed to get in each other’s countries for 2 years already.

Pandemic rules made it much harder. Not only it is very expensive to go to his country, there are visa problems for both of us.
