I learned that when he met me he was in a 3 year relationship. How should I feel now?

I am dating that guy the last 6 months and we really have a great time together. But recently I learned that when he met me he was in a serious relationship with another girl and that the first month of us dating they hadn't officially broke up. I feel awful. First of all I feel like I am the reason for a break up and also I feel betrayed having in mind that the first month he was seeing both of us. On his defense, he claims that he didn't want her anyone and that his feelings were over long time ago but still she was a person that he shared things together. How should I act? Is his attitude normal?
