Crush gave up after only ONE attempt to keep the friendship going?

My crush and I spent enough time with each other throughout the past two years. Although it's usually me who makes suggestions for activities (which he usually says no), he did used to invite me to a certain hobby of his on a weekly basis. But after just ONE time when I actually said no to joining, he just gave up inviting me completely.

How do I deal with mattering that little to someone?

Why does it bother you? You should be glad that happened and be thinking "now I know, sooner than later". Imagine dealing with that fragile little ego indefinitely going forward? Curious though - did you give him a reason for your declining his invite?

I said that that particular event didn't interest me as much as the previous events we had gone to together. He said 'no problem, next time'. That was two months ago. We ran into each other a few weeks ago, and he said hope to get together again soon. But then he didn't take up my offer when I suggested something to do, and recently I find out that he's been going to all kinds of events that he could have invited me to, just as he had always done before, but didn't. What the heck!

Well, he just proved my point, and you verified it. His fragile little ego was spurned and hurt by your declining his offer. He didn't "hear" the part about you not liking the event; what he HEARD in his head was "I don't want to go to something you like but I don't, with YOU". To him, that's a rejection. He said nice things "ok, next time", but he didn't mean it, obviously.

Wow. I can't believe it only took one time, though. He caves in to another female friend who says no repeatedly, even though he says, oh, she's not reaching out to me, so I won't reach out to her. So he obviously cares about her more

So you turned him down once and haven’t asked why he hasn’t invited again.
Sounds like you didn’t put that much effort into letting him know your intentions.
He might not feel like playing games and if he’s inviting you out to than he may have a crush as well.
I’d say open the door have the direct conversation
He might have picked up on your signals wrong.
