Dating an only child: does it make a difference? (Page 2)

Question

For two years, I dated a woman who was an only child. I was tolerant of many little quirks and idiosyncrasies. She was a picky "food snob" and even a simple, casual, quick dinner out somewhere was usually a $50+ adventure. If she wanted to go to a concert, she invited me and I never said no, even if the music was not one of my preferred genres. If I invited her to go to a concert, she would say, "No, I don't like that group. Why don't you go by yourself?" Her likes and dislikes were well established and she had very little flexibility.  I don't really think that she was conscious of her self-centeredness and if I brought it to her attention (which happened rarely,) she did not see her behavior as being self-centered. However, I eventually realized that she had an attitude, perhaps subconsciously, that she should get more out of our relationship that she put in. That realization motivated me to break up with her. She was an only child and had not been "thoroughly" spoiled by her parents but she certainly got more attention than most kids who had siblings. (I am the third of four children in my family of origin.) I suppose that it was inescapable that she would be like this and I wondered about her other relationships, whether this had been a problem in those relationships, and whether others experienced a similar attitude when they dated an only child. Have you dated an only child? Was it different in any way that you might attribute to your partner being an only child? Are you an only child? If so, do you think that affects what you have to offer in a relationship when compared to other potential partners who come from larger families with siblings?

My first boyfriend was an only child. He was an ass. All of my exes were asses though... but he was a different kind of ass. Did it make any sort of difference? Nah. Not really.

I am raised as a only child and I tell my partner don't buy me birthday card it costs too much money and I don't want a gift because it's too costly.

never dated a only child but my best friend is a only child selfish and self centered true very true i have 7 siblings never met her kind before. I'm understanding because they don't know how to make a change so everyone is happy.

I voted worse, but I don't meant actually bad. She can't share, thinks for herself instinctively, can't stand when I've eaten something of hers. I'm bringing her round to be accepting of other humans hahaha

Never dated an only child and I have 2 siblings. I can see how growing up in that environment could make someone a bit more selfish than othere who have siblings. Not in their own fault, thats the way they knew the whole world.

God. I've dated 3 only child guys. They are so dumb about some things. Definitely different and more selfish but not horrible.

I'm an only child and I don't have the behavior you describe. I don't think that dating me is better or worse than dating someone with siblings.

Maybe I was spoiled as a kid a little but as an adult I work my ass off. It's all about upbringing. So does it matter? If you treat the person across from you with respect that's all that counts.

i've never dated an only child so i would not know but TBH i don't think it a be any different then them being the 2 or 3 or the 4 kid in the family

I definitely think there's a difference. Not only if the person is an only child, but also if the difference with their siblings is 10+ years.
