What does it mean if my boyfriend hypothetically talks about "taking a break"?

We always have hypothetically talk about the future together etc but he recently brought up hypothetically taking a break.. in the past he would say if we were to break up we'd be great friends. I asked if he's trying to tell me something but he says he not and just hypothetically speaking

It's strange to mention you'd be great friends if you broke up with each other. Why even think about that. But if this is how you both talk all the time, then I wouldn't think too much about it.

He said Hypothetically if he needed a break to work on himself/mental state would i give him the space to work on himself.. he woukd stay away from other people but would give me the permission if there was someone else to date to date them (we were talking about his bottled up emotions)
