Trending & News Maybe a sense of pity, compassion, sympathy. The minutia in how I would react depends on how they express their story to me. But my overall goal and strategy would be to try to find a way to comfort them and cheer them up.
In all honesty, I think I'd probably do a poor job of cheering them up in spite of my efforts. My main tool to try to cheer people up is humor but that doesn't tend to work so well for truly traumatic and upsetting situations. So I tend to favor more of a hands-off and more of a listener approach these days if someone is deeply upset or traumatized.

That's pretty cold-hearted. I could understand how some people with serious mental trauma might be difficult to get along with at times, but I think that deserves its share of sympathy and patience.
ikr... Thank god I don't have serious mental health issues apart from PTSD which makes me prone to depression and anxiety..
None of those, it would be one of compassion and support.
