Not mentally ready for relationship but very interested in me and wants to stay friends; stay friends or leave him alone?

Hiiii, I’ve been seeing a guy for a couple months. Long story short, very intense connection from both ends, I would want something more with him. I have no doubt that he also has strong feelings for me. However he is honest, which I appreciate, and tells me he’s not mentally really for a relationship, and given he won’t be able to give his all in it, it would be unfair to me, but would love to stay friends.

After this I simply said okay, I will need some time away from all of this, and I will give some thought as to if I can be friends with you. I mentioned that I can’t guarantee this, and I’m not sure what outcome with come about it. I also mentioned it’s okay for him to work on himself and I want him to be happy, but I just can’t really be with someone who’s unsure of me, and I question my ability to be purely platonic friends.

What would you guys do in this scenario? Was my response to him appropriate (he just liked my text message and didn’t give an actual response)? Would you try to maintain a friendship, or would you just leave it be and avoid contact/move on to see if he comes back around when ready?
