Unless you did a poor job of the explanation? lol But maybe he feels you should have told him that from the beginning? But it's 50/50. Even if he decides he doesn't want to date anymore, I'm sure he'll show you the respect to tell you. In the meantime try not to let your mind run away with you. And, don't beat yourself up too much either. Life happens and this sounds completely understandable to be distracted. Unless you really treated him like shit? lol

I would prepare for it to be over. He doesn't know you. The first impression was really bad. Honestly it would have been a lot better if you cancelled due to said family drama and then maybe rescheduled. Unless you repeatedly cancel dates and such with that person, they probably will understand if you have to cancel.
